And they will keep on coming. Shabana Mahmood has her work cut out.

I wasn’t aware that Farage was an ‘irregular’immigrant perpetrator trying to get on a boat. Shocking news.

PaynesGrey Sun 07-Sept-25 09:40:28

Sparkefizz. Source please. That sounds like fiction aka fake news.

NotSpaghetti Sun 07-Sept-25 09:40:11

The quote you provided, sparklefizz which starts with "I'm currently in my final year of GP training,"

sounds just like other fabricated stories that have been circulating online. It is not from a reliable or official source. There is no evidence from credible news outlets, government reports, or professional medical bodies that I can find.

I've just run it through Gemini and this is what it says:

The story has been widely debunked as a hoax or a piece of creative writing designed to spread on social media and forums. The use of specific, unusual, and inflammatory language is a common characteristic of such hoaxes. While the person posting may be a genuine forum user, the story itself is not based on facts.

Just thought I'd share this too.

There is a reason why the cheerleaders for Brexit are also the the most virulent anti immigrant voices.
Brexit removed our ability to return refugees to their first country of arrival in Europe, one of the main drivers of the huge numbers now arriving here, both legally and illegally.

When I taught in infant classes (okay, 60 years ago!) and I asked who had, for example, made a loud noise, all the children instantly pointed at each other.
I think of that every time I hear Mr Farage ranting about mass deportations or small boats.

I’m not saying there isn’t a problem, but usually the perpetrators are trying to deflect blame from themselves rather than seriously providing the solution.

Thank you escaped it’s always good to hear how things on this topic are being reported upon in the French media.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 07-Sept-25 09:28:42

Oh Sparklefizz that’s not only depressing it’s scary! Suppression of the facts so as not to inflame tensions? Beggars belief but highlights the awful situation we are now in. And meanwhile we are definitely not being told the truth.

escaped Sun 07-Sept-25 09:25:11

Please don't stop FGT, it's an ongoing situation. I'll contribute from France where this issue is in the news constantly.
I am over here again now after a hell of a choppy crossing on a big ferry a few days ago🤢. It seems nothing will deter those coming on small boats.

I'll try to read up from this end what the latest plans include, but at the moment the news is geared towards reporting on an upcoming huge strike here on Wednesday, and I'm keeping a close eye on that. It sounds like the country is about to shut down and that protests will be disruptive across the whole country. This is not a happy place either.

And talking about Reform, it would be interesting, but no, I am not suggesting we do this as it would probs be against the rules,
It would be interesting to find out how many folk agreeing with the post are actually Reform voters.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 07-Sept-25 09:23:22

Isn’t there talk of not leaving the ECHR but either suspension for a while - a moratorium of sorts while we get on top of the situation - or just not complying with Article 8?

Shabana Mahmood will be assessing all options.

As to going back to Hitler-it’s tge perfect example of scapegoating which is going on in this thread. ‘They will turn against us’. Have you met any? Spoken to them.
With leave to stay they are exploited by low paid industry,

I feel its not acceptable to keep quoting Hitler just to try to induce some sort of guilt.

Hitler is brought out on forums when a poster has run out of things to say.
It has zilch to do with anything about people arriving illegally on boats from France.

On a positive note I attended a presentation of diplomates on Friday. Resident doctors who have passed their final exams in their specialist area. They were truly representative of our diverse multicultural country and a most welcome reminder of what immigration has brought to this country, the NHS couldn't function without them.
Of course we need to improve our immigration systems, we need to be able to discriminate between genuine refugees and economic migrants and we need to deal with the huge backlog which frankly is a legacy of the last government. There are no quick fixes to complex, complicated problems and constantly focusing on the numbers arriving on small boats doesn't actually change anything . Sadly it does whip up racist and xenophobic reactions from people who only read headlines.
I don't think we should leave the ECHR, seems like throwing the baby out with the bath water but we could look at the various acts regarding Refugees to see if they still are fit for purpose in the world we live in now.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 07-Sept-25 09:10:37

Btw I’ve just scrolled up & seen some posts were deleted. I’d just like to state I didn’t report any of them. I’d gone to bed early last night.

Kandinsky Sun 07-Sept-25 09:06:27

That’s the strange thing.
They can’t seem to differentiate between legal migrants, those coming here legally to work, which we absolutely need, as a country we wouldn’t survive without them - to those entering illegally. Who are they? are they criminals? no one knows?

If people cannot see the parallels between the rhetoric and in the USA actions, now and the early 30s in Germany, then they are either ignorant of European history or in denial.

I find this very worrying indeed.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 we may disagree on many things on here but I am sorry that you are navigating difficult things at home.

Relieved to see you back FGT2 👍

Well the threads on this subject are getting repetitive and nothing new is said. Migrants will carry on coming until conditions in their home countries improve. And that will require substantial increases in international aid. Is the British taxpayer up for that?

I said I wouldn’t comment anymore.
But I can’t help myself. Last night I was sad (conditions at home) so I just folded and gave in to pressure and mean girl comments.

However winterwhite it’s nothing to do with ‘conditions at home’. We cannot influence or aid so many countries (some corrupt) to raise the standard of living there to what these irregular migrants know they can just expect here on arrival.. TikTok shows them what we in the UK offer and gang masters plying their trade advertise on it. They even post ‘offers’ (big business you see at work - a true capitalist enterprise!) “post a great review from your hotel surroundings and we will let you travel for free”. There was a detailed report about this only recently. That’s why ‘Smash the Gangs’ isn’t ever going to work.

Nor will Macron earn the ££smillions we pay the French.

All is lost I’m afraid unless our government Get a Grip and stop the pull factors. Remember even Macron told us that 2 years ago!

And no apologies for ‘chatting’ about this topic. I know many folk on here don’t like to dip their toes in N&P as it can be brutal. Sometimes just welcoming other posters in to talk on a subject is better done through a different channel I think?

And finally (for now 😊) How anyone can compare them to the NHS workers who have come here legally is beyond me!

Mollygo Sun 07-Sept-25 08:54:20

Some posters do like to post information on a daily basis, whether it’s like the weather on the good morning threads, or politics, on the ‘what the LP has done today’ threads.

Nobody, AFAIK, posts daily on what the weather isn’t like, or what the LP hasn’t done, because it’s not news.

Although it would probably have elicited questions like Is KS’ policy is working? or, Are the French finally doing something? or even, Have they been scared off by NF?

Are all those disagreeing with FGT’s posts claiming that the numbers arriving in small boats are sustainable?
If not, why shouldn’t someone post about something that concerns them (and possibly other GNs too)?

Kandinsky Sun 07-Sept-25 08:41:07

growstuff

Why don’t you start your own thread about the wonders & joy of 1000’s of young males arriving here year on year seeking asylum.
Fill it full of fantastic facts about how they contribute positively towards our economy & society.

Thank you.

Oreo Sun 07-Sept-25 08:37:02

LadyGracie

It’s the truth, the numbers arriving are not sustainable.

Keep stating the facts FGT, many do agree with you.

Absolutely!
There’s a huge difference between legal immigration which we need and the many thousands arriving by boat every week or so.It isn’t sustainable.

growstuff Sun 07-Sept-25 08:33:38

PaynesGrey

Why does nobody start a thread when nobody arrives?

Nobody likes shocking FACTS!! grin

GrannyGravy13 Sun 07-Sept-25 08:32:46

PaynesGrey

Why does nobody start a thread when nobody arrives?

Probably because it is not headline news on all the mainstream media.

growstuff Sun 07-Sept-25 08:32:10

Calendargirl

How did Australia deal with these issues several years ago?

I know they didn’t have little rubber dinghies arriving, but they did have larger boats coming in.

Well, they adopted a zero tolerance approach to illegal migration, or whatever you want to call it, ‘Operation Resolute’ I think it was named, clue in the last word.

Result, subsequent governments have carried on with the same system, and it works.

Time we did something similar.

If you know of any handy UK-owned islands on the middle of an ocean somewhere, please let the Home Office know.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 07-Sept-25 08:32:01

petra exactly 👍

There are always more crossings when the sea is calm, they pack more people in the dinghies, they really are an accident waiting to happen
