Disposing of documents

I seem to have a pile of old payslips, bank and credit card statement and all sorts of financial documents that I know could contribute to identity theft if I just chucked them. There is a lot of them as I have faithfully saved them for years. My problem is how to dispose of them. Any ideas? We live in a flat so a bonfire isn't possible.

If you’ve got a lot, you can get a shredding service to collect the. A neighbour of ours recently got rid of a couple of big bagfuls.

A cross-court shredder but don't do too much in one session.

I really enjoy shredding, it's very satisfying!

If we put the shredded paper into a paper bag the recycling people will take it along with other paper and cardboard.

Cross-cut!

Autocorrect doesn't like that for some reason.

We take ours to a company that deals with confidential waste.
A very large bag full is £8.00.

Ours go in the compost 'dalek'. Sorry, that's no help to Aveline.

I've already said that a confidential waste disposal company is coming to take it away. £5 per bag plus VAT. Minimum number of bags 10.

Our council don’t want shredded paper in with the recycling, apparently it jams up the machines.

It has to go in the general waste.

Please check your area, you may find it’s the same where you are.

In the past, all waste paper went on the fire. These days, we have to find an alternative. I shred all of mine and then use the paper in my animals cages.

I gave up with our shredder, it is confined to the attic, it was constantly jamming, despite my being careful and only feeding one paper through at a time 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤬

I just put them in the recycling. Shredding and soaking mean they can’t be recycled.

Aveline Wed 10-Sept-25 08:06:24

argymargy these are confidential documents- important not to put them in general recycling.

MadamChairman Wed 10-Sept-25 13:46:48

I shred them and the shreddings go on the compost heap.

KathleenE Wed 10-Sept-25 13:47:30

I shred mine and then put them in the compost bin

pamdixon Wed 10-Sept-25 13:51:36

I'm a compulsive shredder too! Moved house recently, and had to dispose of loads of redundant paper-work., Shredding rather therapeutic actually!

Fae1 Wed 10-Sept-25 13:56:28

Shredder and then put in several different recycling bins so they can not be pieced back together. Yes, I know I'm over cautious !

MaggsMcG Wed 10-Sept-25 13:59:22

What do you do with the mush afterwards if you don't have a compost heap?

Sadie5803 Wed 10-Sept-25 14:15:24

Buy a shredder, i wouldn't be without mine

FranP Wed 10-Sept-25 15:24:09

You can buy scissors that cut into shreds, although this would be less useful for a large amount.

Papier mache makes other things but in a flat might be an effort to get dry.

Norah Wed 10-Sept-25 15:28:30

I use our shedder weekly. Perhaps buy a shredder.

Desdemona Wed 10-Sept-25 15:30:52

I just rip paperwork up into small pieces. I like the idea of soaking it in water as suggested here so will start doing that too.

DancingDuck Wed 10-Sept-25 15:48:25

If you do decide to get a shredder, make sure its a cross cut one so it cuts into little pieces rather than long 'shreds' that could be pasted together again to get person information.

jocork Wed 10-Sept-25 16:11:30

I used to have a shredder that cut long strips. They could be pieced together, though not easily. I now have a cross-cut one but before I got it I occasionally shredded stuff at work when things were very sensitive. Can't do that now I'm retired though!

😂. Take that indeed! If only I had a shed.

Sarnia. They’re called ‘Sharpies” Sainsbury’s sell them

Mojack26 Wed 10-Sept-25 17:57:31

Burn or shred them

We had a similar problem after a huge clearout of our filing system. I shoved all the hugely confidential /dangerous/ ID paperwork in a bucket of water in the shed of my allotment; and after a week or two it turned to pulp so I poured it into the compost heap where worms have eaten it.

Take that, scammers.

😂 great idea.
