will bedjackets make a return?

I have a blue sort of light fleece bed jacket, bought many years ago in M&S. I do only have this one and won't part with it. Very comfortable and easy washed. I cannot wear wool, this one is a great alternative and I wear it in Autumn/ Winter. It dries very quickly after washing too.

I have a short fleece bed jacket, I love it. I bought it in Tesco about 15 years ago, just right for sitting up in bed doing Wordle.

Bought this last year, love it, so cosy.

I cannot stand polyester as in oodies nor pink fluffy bedjackets, so I made myself some lovely shawls, stars in the sky being one. I have different sizes and all are made from wools or wools with eg alpaca. The next on my list is giltwood and I have the wool ready bluefaced leicester/merino mix. Shawls are very good to wear while reading or knitting in bed or just sitting

Bedjackets, as in the vintage type, will not return

I have had a few big scarves/throws bought me which I use in bed, too cumbersome over daily clothes but excellent in bed. I sit up reading most nights and they are ideal.
Horrifies me the cost of wool or wool mix knitting wool now, not happy with acrylic wool.

I'm in the process of knitting a bed cape like my Granny used to wear. At the moment I use an old cardigan which has seen better days.

I remember them - knitted in a lacy pink stitch, with ribbons! No thanks!

Some years ago M&S had shortie ‘jacket’ type versions of their warm fleecy dressing gowns.
I bought a bright red one for a dd - she had it for ages - it was eventually the favourite sleeping place for her cat!

But IMO that sort of thing would fit the bill nicely.

I have one from M&S like you describe, it’s navy blue zip up with pockets.
As someone who sleeps sitting up I wear long sleeved t shirts in various weights to keep my shoulders and arms warm in the cooler months, the fleece comes out when it’s properly cold.

I don't much like old fashioned woolly bed jackets, but I've got a couple of bright fleecy ones.

I don’t sit up in bed - I neither read in bed, nor eat or drink - but I have sometimes worn a cardigan or loose jumper over my sleepwear. My mother had soft knitted bed jackets with ribbon instead of buttons, though I don’t remember her reading in bed either!

I made three for my mother from cut down dressing gowns .
She liked them , but never wore them .
I make do with old cardigans .
I make do with old cardigans and aprons during the day - it's not exactly attractive.

Use an old cardigan too scruffy for daily use but still warm on a chilly night!

That’s what I do too, a real cosy old number.

Bonmarche do bed jackets which just look like a zip up fleece to me. Might just as well one I already have.

Mine is only 2! (Hot stuff, me! 😂)
I get very hot, so if I have a 2 tog, it’s easy for me to put a light blanket on top in the winter. I don’t have heating in my bedroom, but the only bit of me that gets chilly is my nose!
Last night, for example, it was quite warm and I only had a sheet covering me until I woke up a little chilly at 3am, when I popped a throw over me. (I only ever have a sheet in the Summer, at least to start with).
I would love it to be cold like when I was young. Then, I had an eiderdown, a hot water bottle, bed-socks and, if I was lucky, a cat who used to come into my bedroom and snuggle into my back. Those were the days!

I use an old jumper when reading in bed when I’m at home.

When travelling I carry a woolen knitted shawl that I can use on the train, reading in bed or as an extra small blanket if need be. One of the most useful things I ever made.

My mum had a pink quilted bed jacket I’m not sure whether she used it in bed but certainly wore it in the evenings together with a rug over her knees. I haven’t seen it for ages so I guess she doesn’t have it anymore. She does have the bed socks to go with it though.

I wear mine when sitting up in bed to read or have a cup of tea. It’s a very pretty soft quilted cotton. I used to have a beautiful one of cream quilted satin. They don’t have to be hideous.

Is it not just as easy to wear any old jumper while reading in bed?

Why should anything as hideous as a bed-jacket come back into fashion?

And why buy one if you are living, as most of us are, on a fixed income and battling rising prices?

Any old long sleeved garment will do the trick.

My Mum would never wear an old jumper in bed! The very idea! She lived to nearly 97 and was always dressed beautifully and with her hair styled and her nails painted in a subtle shade.

I wear a pale blue zippy fleece jacket the doesn't have a hood. It is too washed out to be worn in public but it does the job.

I’ve never had one and I know my Mum, or paternal grandmother didn’t either (my other grandma died).
We don’t have a TV in our bedroom.
I don’t think I’d use one, or any other ‘cover’.

Bedjackets never went away! I have 3 x very warm and very pretty ones. I wear them in rotation from mid-September onwards until the spring, when I'm sitting up in bed watching T.V.! Dressing gowns are too bulky and lumpy to wear in bed!

Perhaps the knitted variety of bed-jacket went out of fashion. They would be a pain to launder - and would also get easily stretched out of shape from being worn in bed.

One of my bedjackets is made of a beautiful, printed, quilted fabric. It also has padded buttons and a soft collar, edged with satin ribbon. My other two are made of soft fleece, in pretty colours, with embroidery on them, and also with soft collars and soft buttons. A bed jacket is designed to have nothing hard or harsh about the design that would dig into us and irritate us, if we were feeling unwell, or if we fell asleep wearing it!

All three wash beautifully and dry quickly without using a tumbe dryer.

I've tried a knitted jersey-style hoodie in bed. But the hood feels lumpy and uncomfortable behind my neck and upper back against my bed pillows. Also the corded hood strings with plastic bells on them, and a stiff zip up the front, was not at all comfortable to wear in the bed if I fell asleep while wearing it.

I have a knitted shrug that I was given when I had my first son 44 years ago. I still have it and use it if I am in bed for any reason. When my daughter in law was pregnant with her first child I made her a box of items for the baby that she probably didn't know she needed and included a fleece bed jacket. She laughed about it at the time but said after the baby was born that it was such a useful item when sitting feeding in the night. I bought it from a well known auction site and there were lots to choose from. I do like the traditional knitted ones with a ribbon tie, very reminiscent of my grandmother at the end of her life.
