will bedjackets make a return?

it is obvious this winter the majority of us will have to watch the pennies. The other day when I was sorting through knitting patterns many vintage ones were for bedjackets some very pretty ones and I was thinking that they could be great for the winter time. nothing worse than sitting up in bed reading or having a cup of tea, cosy legs and feet in bed but your arms and chest get chilly! when i had my daughter many moons ago I had one for hospital mum gave me. i thought it would be a waste of time especially as hospitals are so hot but for early morning feeds etc it was great and I used it when I got home. Just wondered would anyone use or is using a bedjacket?

I knitted a pink cardigan for myself years ago. It was knitted so back and back half of sleeves were all in one. The front the same all in a kind of pattern which produced a light kind of lace impression. Wore it originally with Summer dresses and now used nightly as a bed jacket. Love it and dread it wearing out. Tried knitting it again but the long rows and the pattern together with arthritis and cataracts forced me to give up. Wearing it as I write this in bed on this cold morning. Would never go back to bed jackets as such.

I have four oodies. Two fleecy ones, a furry one that my DD bought and a red Christmas one.
They all come down to just above the knee, so cosy for those freezing winter evenings worn over pyjamas.

I read in bed a lot, mostly on my Kindle, but don’t need to sit up to do it. I’ll be still snuggled under the duvet.

I bought mine from Amazon, Camille is the make. They are warm and soft. I wouldn't be without them as I like to read in bed. Also its just nice to put on when I wake up.

I wear a fleece zip up jacket from Uniqlo in bed in the morning.

I think my fleece (s) might have to be surgically removed from me at some point. When it’s warm it’s tied round my waist, ready to have my arms inserted if it gets chilly. When I’m asleep it’s on the bed waiting to be put on when I get up if it’s cold or if I sit up in bed to read.

Sorry, you’ve been beaten to it🥲🥲 Heated throws, shawls etc are very popular already

I am going to get very rich selling my new invention;

electric bedjackets.

Oh yes! Can I be your first customer!

Even though I am nearly 70, I would consider bed jackets to belong to ladies much older than I am. A Miss Marple type garment. When I get into bed I tend to just throw my clothes onto a bedside box. If I wake up and want to read I might grab my shirt or fleece back. However, I have just remembered that somewhere I have a gorgeous pashmina that I bought a couple of decades ago and wore on various cruises. Maybe I should hunt for it and keep it by my bed. I think that when I find it there might be some other interesting garments with it.

I can’t help thinking of the four grandparents all bundled up in shawls and bed jackets, end to end in that big Victorian bed, in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s grandparents.

Chocolate buttons?😄

I wrap a pashmina around me if reading in bed.

I always take a pashmina with me when flying. I bought a beautiful cashmere pashmina in a charity shop for £2. It was brand new and really warm being cashmere. I can only assume the person who donated it did not know how expensive they are.

Around the house in the evening, if not going out I watch tv with a cosy old cardie over my pjs.
I don’t mind being a Grandma Button RosieandherMaw😁never heard that expression before, where is it from?

What if someone is a bedwetter though?

I just found this pattern which is the bedjacket my Mum knitted. She used lovely, modern colours like raspberry and moss green. She made her 3 sisters one each too.

The list of things to take into hospital when I had my first baby 48 years ago included a bed jacket. I chose to take a short, soft, knitted cape with ribbon ties, so not strictly a bed jacket, but perfect for night feeds. I still have it... it's great for just throwing over your shoulders, warm and comfortable. It is pale pink (!) and was bought in a shop but one day I'd like to knit one in jolly colours with some of the yarn from my stash.

RosieandherMaw Sat 13-Sept-25 13:35:59

Hear,hear Primrose
Why would you want to wear "an old cardi" or any unattractive garment whether anybody else is going to see it or not?
I am not ready to turn into Grandma Button so old cardis, aprons etc will go in the rag bag.
I'm not desperate yet!
FYI I have a couple of cowl necked velour tops from Joules which render me decent enough to open the door to the postie and are pleasantly snuggly over pj's

I hope so. The trouble with Oodies is that they have a hood and make it uncomfortable for me.

Jaxjacky Sat 13-Sept-25 12:07:47

Just any sort of ‘top for warmth’ Crosstichfan, they must get cold too.

Is it only women who wear these sort of covers in bed I wonder?
