Autumn is early this year and it’s chilly this evening. I’m very tempted to switch on my electric fire, just to warm the sitting room.
In the end I put on my dressing gown, over my clothes, and thick socks.
Has anyone actually put on their central heating yet?

watermeadow Sun 14-Sept-25 13:01:39

We, and our houses, are all different. I used to never turn my thermostat above 15 but now I’m old it’s creeping up. My house is very old, no insulation except the loft, and draughty.
Before even thinking about heating I checked that I shall actually get the winter fuel allowance this year. I need it but it should not be paid to those who don’t.

We have just got home after 3 days in Edinburgh and 4 on the East Neuk. We were so lucky; the weather was wonderful: warm but not hot, perfect for walking and no need of a jacket. The last couple of days it was still warm but very windy, just perfect for watching the sea come crashing in over the edge of the tidal pool at Cellardyke, though we nearly got blown off the end of the Toft at Elie.
Back home this morning in the NW of England it’s drizzling and cool. I have a lightweight knit jumper on. Will I put on the heating? Not until October.

Surely it depends where you live, some parts of the uk are so much colder. Also house aspect is important

I pay £92 pm for my energy but my house is an insulated new build, 4 bedrooms, SE/NW aspect and the sun is blazing in, keeping my house warm

Heating should be high on the priority list but there are people who cannot afford much from any priority list. Everyone knows the `safe` temperatures, no need to repeat over and over. They are not attainable for some

We bought solar recently.
Will see how it performs this winter.
Our bills were getting too high.
Hopefully we will get the payback from installing it.

Ours on thermostat too, it kicked in yesterday morning, not for long, maybe half an hour, I have Raynauds and need to keep warm. Dual control electric blanket, MrJ never has his side on.

Yes - I’ve got the CH on. I have lung problems so I need to have a warm house. My S/O is £227 pm. (Gas&Electric)

Oh wow, that's a lot! Ours is less than half that and I thought that was a lot...

Grammaretto Sat 13-Sept-25 08:03:45

My monthly bill is twice yours crazy one reason why I need to downsize ASAP and why I have lodgers.
I notice the fuel bills are going up too.

foxie48 Sat 13-Sept-25 08:02:57

I took a hot water bottle to bed last night, still got my summer bedding on and the window open but it was so cosy to have a lovely warm bed.

jusnoneed Sat 13-Sept-25 07:52:49

We are having central heating installed for the first time at the moment, the radiators are all fitted and the new boiler goes in today. I can see us disagreeing on temps as I like it coolish while OH likes to be hot. The controls will be going up and down a fair bit.
Never had the old fire/oil rads on until November usually. I don't like it too warm and certainly not in my bedroom, window open all year unless it's really windy. At the moment windows are still open through the house.
Until it gets a bit chillier on my bed I just have the duvet cover with no duvet, I find that stays better than a just a sheet. I tend to kick it back anyway when it's hot. My OH has winter weight duvet on his bed all year round!

Brrr... exactly hiw I feel today.
Bought a couple of long line cardigans in Primark yesterday . They aren't perhaps a good buy as the quality is dubious .
Back to layer dressing.
I went to church last week and I was cold so now I know that Autunm is here .

Redhead56 Sat 13-Sept-25 01:20:03

We had our central heating replaced recently and it’s very welcome. Our old boiler was unreliable and as autumn has come early and I usually dread the winter. My arthritic joints will appreciate the warmth now possible thanks to the new heating.

JenniferEccles Sat 13-Sept-25 00:23:13

Ours is on all the time but controlled by the thermostat so it only comes on when it turns a bit chilly.
I noticed it had come on yesterday morning when I went down to make the early morning tea, but it soon went off again.

henetha Fri 12-Sept-25 23:30:57

I'm sorry to hear that, Crazy. Yes, I understand you need a warm house therefore. It's expensive but necessary.
I only pay £91 per month.
I hope you get better. smile

travelsafar Fri 12-Sept-25 23:28:28

Yes i put mine on today in the lounge for the first time. Radiator in bathroom has been on for a week or so. Not in bedroom yet as I can't stand it too warm in there. In fact window still open and I'm in bed with my fan on as love to feel cool air on my head as long as my body warm.

henetha Fri 12-Sept-25 23:15:40

Not the actual central heating yet, but I have a nice coal effect electric fire in the living area and that's been on for a couple of hours in the evenings this week. It's been chilly. I hate feeling cold.

srn63 Fri 12-Sept-25 23:11:38

I put the heating on or light the woodburner when I feel cold. It doesn't matter what month it is. It's been on lots of times in the past 2 or 3 weeks.

Sarnia Fri 12-Sept-25 22:44:33

I haven't turned the heating on at home but I did have the heater on in my car this morning when I was doing the school run at 7.50am.

fancythat Fri 12-Sept-25 22:42:00

Oh yes.
I think Autumn is early here as well.
And I have a skin condition. I think I am in for a cold feeling few months.

Primrose53 Fri 12-Sept-25 22:05:31

I am sitting here wrapped in a towel after showering. It is 23c in the lounge as it’s been sunny here and the sun pours in and heats the room. No heating needed yet.

ViceVersa Fri 12-Sept-25 22:04:21

Oreo

ViceVersa

Oh, absolutely not. We have an absolute ban on any form of heating going on before October at the earliest, and even then it would only be the woodburner. Central heating is reserved for the very coldest of conditions - talking about frost, snow etc.

Why is that?
If it’s a money concern, I get that totally, but not otherwise.

Mostly money - couldn't afford to have the heating unless absolutely necessary, but we're used to living in a cold house. I grew up here with ice on the inside of the windows for about three months of the year, so we're pretty hardy creatures.

Redrobin51 Fri 12-Sept-25 21:50:08

Have a health condition that gets worse pain-wise if I get cold and once I get cold it takes me hours to warm up. The bed socks have reappeared and I've sorted out my long-sleeved pyjamas. The new electric blanket is on just on a low setting to warm the bed. It just isn't worth my economising on heat and being miserable.

Grandmabatty Fri 12-Sept-25 21:49:15

I'm in bed and the electric blanket is on. I'm quite toasty now. Taichinan how lovely to hear from you.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 12-Sept-25 21:36:59

👋 Taichinan good to see you posting! x

Pantglas2 Fri 12-Sept-25 21:30:24

Last week I changed the bed linen from cool cotton to warm flannelette, keeping the summer quilt. It’s made a huge difference and I won’t need the winter wool duvet for another month or so, hopefully.

Regarding CH, we spend our days in the south facing conservatory and it’s usually late October after clocks go back when we turn our thermostat up to 18degrees for evening warmth in the sitting room.

Our home is cavity and fully loft insulated with new windows and doors and our gas bill for the year is around £300. With the WFA being restored I’m donating mine to DGD so they can top up their insulation and not worry about their bills!
