Not sure about everybody else but we are plagued by big spiders in our house and garden.
Just got rid of a humungous one on the living room curtain.
And going in the garden is like a military op, I have to get the broom and sweep it both ways as I walk anywhere, otherwise I get spiders dangling off me.
Have got plug ins that deter mice and spiders, except they most obviously don’t, and have sprayed peppermint round doors and windows, smells like a toothpaste factory but hasn’t stopped the house spiders from frolicking about.
Any ideas on how to deter them and get rid of them. I suck them up the hoover nozzle because I cannot go near them, it might be cruel but I really am phobic about the blighters.

Please don’t kill them. It’s cruel.

I'm worried about Fred who lives in our downstairs cloakroom. There doesn't seem to be much to eat in there, occasionally I find a dead fly and leave it out for him.

I just changed the bed and a big one fell out. I thought he was dead but he ran under the bed. How am I going to sleep now?

Oh no!
I wouldn’t be able to sleep in that bed. Would have to sleep in the guest room.
Reminds me of a story my DD told me about time she spent in India after finishing uni, she was sleeping for 2 weeks in a bedroom in the house of a family friend, one day she got up and saw a massive spider on the wall, the family friend disposed of it then moved her bed to look for any other creepy crawlies to discover a big web under her bed. The thought of her sleeping whilst that massive spider lurked under her bed made my blood run cold.

Our daughter is phobic after a huge one fell on her head whilst she was having a shower a few years ago.
I bought her a spider catcher when she was at University. She lives alone again now and isn’t keen on going in the garage.
I read that Cellar spiders ( I used to call them holiday spiders as only saw them in the countryside) eat the huge spiders. I have seen recent evidence of a dead one in a much smaller cellar spider’s web!

Hug one came and sat by my chair while I was watching Mastermind - bloody cheek. DH carefully picked him up!!! and put him in the garden.

Horse chestnuts on the windowsill will stop garden spiders getting in. House spiders will die if you put them outside. They wont hurt you and will scurry away to hide out of sight. They are a good thing to have as they trap and eat other household insects.

Huntsmen could give you a nasty bite but they won’t kill you like some of the nasty ones we get. There is one that causes your skin to rot, horrible. Funnel web spiders are poisonous and so are red backs. Just avoid them. They don’t seek you out - they bite you by accident, like snakes. I never touch any of our spiders, pays to be cautious.

Those spiders in our homes are eating something. If we get rid of them, will their prey increase and spread?

Babs03 Tue 23-Sept-25 13:29:49

Is still a mystery to me why any big spiders in the vicinity run straight towards me, and oh boy are they fast.

Jaxjacky Tue 23-Sept-25 09:57:51

We’ve not seen any yet, just the odd crane fly being annoying, MrJ doesn’t like spiders, I pick them up and put them outside.

The ‘Arachnaphobia’ film was horrendous to watch! Years later, I still wonder what possessed me to watch it!

I have a spider repellent spray I go round all the rooms in the house spraying tops of wardrobes. window sills, bed frames, and I buy peppermint oil to wipe over doors .I haven't seen too many so far, but if I find a big one Henry the hoover swallows it,,,It's either them or me they terrify me , they're getting bigger and faster.

Oreo Tue 23-Sept-25 09:47:15

Just zap them, putting them outdoors does nothing, they find a crack in the wall and come back in.The biggest are the females , you don’t want them laying hundreds of little ones! The more that you zap the less you’ll see next Autumn.

I have a spider phobia. When my husband was alive, and we lived in a village, we had a lot of spider visitors. He would catch them and put them outside but they came back. It’s the only time I have been tempted to kill a living thing (the spider, not my husband!)
When he died, I moved out of our house as it was too big for me on my own and I am now spider-free. How? Easy - I moved to an 8th floor apartment!
That might be a bit drastic for some though!
My adult daughter also had a real phobia about spiders. It was so bad that she has been known to get her Dad out of bed when she came home from a late shift and finding a spider in the hallway. It was that, or stay on the doorstep or in the car all night until her husband came home from his night shift.
She realised that this could not go on and found out about a course run by London Zoo that promised to cure the phobia. We none of us had faith in this but, to my surprise, while she was there, she sent me a photo of her with a huge spider on her arm! She still doesn’t like them but can now cope if she sees one.

When in my actual bedding and I can't catch them I can't cope, sorry - as I agree in principle deeply GG13. They usually go in a cosy place a little way down the garden.

Our DD and GS were distraught the other night, as a rather large one was found under his duvet, she had no choice but to euthanise the intruder.

She still feels guilty 4 days on…

I catch them and put them in the garage, or the shed at the end of the garden.

I cannot kill them.

They eat all the nasty things, little flys, mosquitoes etc., part of the cycle of life

If I catch them and put them in the garden, they often overtake me on the path back upto the house! I think they are house spiders, and don’t want to holiday in my garden. 😁

House spiders don't like the cold. This warm summer has increased the number of spiders in general.

When we first moved to Scotland we were surprised at how few spiders there were but that has changed lately 😖

Sorry to worry you, but the lady house spiders have been hiding in your homes all year.

The ones that are noticeable at the moment are the males, coming inside and looking for love 🕷️🕸️🕷️🕸️🕷️

🙂 I still cant find it in my heart to be sympathetic. It's a matter of hunting them with a glass and postcard, but they are very quick off the mark.

I'm afraid if they were in my bedroom my instant unthought out reaction is to squash.

NotAGran55 Tue 23-Sept-25 07:46:16

It was awful Babs03
None of us had heard of the spider, let alone how dangerous it could be. The speed of the spread of the infection was very frightening.
I have now met a lady whose daughter almost lost her lower leg as the result of a spider bite whilst dog walking locally.

It’s a little black thing with a reddish mark on its back. My son didn’t see it, but the first doctor he saw recognised it’s 2 little bite marks, and knew straight away what had caused it.
They are apparently shy, non aggressive, lurk in dark corners and bite when disturbed. He was sitting at a park bench having lunch.
They are on increase in numbers and locations in the country, with hospitalisations on the increase.

Beware! 🕷️

I hardly ever get big spiders in my old house. We once had a flea infestation and I used the big spray called Indorex. Afterwards I found a few dead insects and spiders and have never seen any since.

My son spent 5 days in hospital earlier this year, an emergency admission, following a false widow spider bite.

His hand doubled in size and went black, excruciating pain, dizziness, fever, vomiting. Felt as though his arm was on fire and his hand was going to explode.
On oxygen, 2 lots of IV antibiotics, fluids, antiemetics, IV painkillers for the entire time.

I have a vegetarian gardener friend who later told me it is the only creature he ever kills.

Oh my!
So sorry for your son, what a horrid experience. Now I feel almost justified in having a phobia of spiders.
What do these spiders look like??
