The Guardian losing money? Who would have thought?

Apparently one can support this newspaper by buying a £281 jumper with a ‘Guardian’ slogan on it.

Any takers? 😁

It was in The Telegraph Casdon.
Where else?

🤣

Well, you have made me just shell out for an annual payment to them.
It means they can continue free access to all, something really important.

Sanctimonious is always the word which comes to mind with the Guardian.
Very Left wing of course but that’s fine for those of a similar mindset.

The newspaper has a small readership- in fact I’ve often said I think its entire readership is on GN!

Casdon Tue 23-Sept-25 21:42:33

I hope people only say they are wrong when they publish stories that are not based in fact, surely? I don’t think it’s correct to accuse any media source of getting things wrong without evidence to say they have done. In the case of the Guardian financial position, the Telegraph did. Regarding the budget, we don’t know yet, nobody does.

At this stage it’s all speculation though, obviously.

So much stuff is speculation.
Exactly why I’m hoping all that’s said about the DT is true.
I don’t want to read in any paper that what the DT says here is actually true. I’m happy for them to be as wrong as we’re told they are.

The Guardian is suffering because it has abandoned it's female readers/base; it is totally on the gender identity side of the argument; and the Observer was sold off/abandoned earlier this year because of these issues. The Observer was my favourite newspaper with a good female and equality angle, now it is awful.
I did subscribe to the Guardian, but when they ganged up on Suzanne Moore, and Hadley Freeman, and worshipped at the altar of trans identity, I stopped paying, and stopped buying the Saturday issue.

Allira Tue 23-Sept-25 20:28:17

Well, I do read them online and I suppose that means they get advertising revenue.
I read the Guardian and the Mail usually because they're the free ones. That way you can see different points of view and sit on the fence and observe the fighting below.

I'm feeling really guilty now because I don't buy a newspaper nor will I subscribe to one.

Neither do I anymore but I sure don’t feel guilty.😸

I’d really like everything people say about the DT publishing inaccuracies to be true, when I read this
Rachel Reeves has been told to mount a £6bn tax raid on pensioners, landlords and the self-employed by the most influential think tank within Labour

Read Tim Wallace's whole report below 👇

www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2025/09/23/labour-favourite-think-tank-demands-tax-raid-on-pensioners/

Please let it be an inaccuracy.

It isn’t welcome news for many people, whatever any government ever does in a budget. I find though that it always helps to read the same information from different sources. It’s the spin that distorts. At this stage it’s all speculation though, obviously.

I apologise for upsetting you ChocolateLG but being confused about trans issues is more than just ‘sloppy journalism’. It really is delusional. So I stand by my comment.

I have subscribed to the Guardian for many years. I also buy the I newspaper a couple of times a week. Read the Daily Mail online to get a different viewpoint and usually end up with a nasty taste in my mouth.

I get the same nasty taste from the Guardian.

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 23-Sept-25 19:12:42

I do think that facts are sacred, actually, especially in view of Mr Trump's active repression of facts he doesn't like.
I am astonished by the phrase deeply unpleasant phrase " deluded nonsense". I had an exchange of views on GN over a lie printed by The Telegraph, and was courteous enough to refer to these as " sloppy journalism".
I am not deluded, nor delusional if I choose to read The Guardian.

Galaxy Tue 23-Sept-25 18:25:29

Oh sorry casdon.
My views on the Guardian remain the samegrin.

Casdon Tue 23-Sept-25 18:23:52

Galaxy

It's not deflection. I view them in the same way as I view flat earthers.
If people want to believe the earth is flat, they are entitled to do that, quite hard to view them as credible on other issues of course.

You misunderstand Galaxy. I’m referring to the Telegraph as an organisation deflecting, not to people on this thread..

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 23-Sept-25 18:20:21

And £231 ?? Crikey. Bearing a silly slogan too. Now where on earth (why on earth) would I wear one?

Oreo Tue 23-Sept-25 18:17:08

Because these jumpers are silly and only silly people will wear them?
Maybe they’ve found their ideal market in the US.

Casdon Tue 23-Sept-25 18:15:40

It’s deflection I think PaynesGrey. They are struggling, so lashing out with desperate stories. I wish they would invest in decent journalists instead of scandal mongers.

People might not like the Guardian, that’s fine - but the media should not lie about verifiable information for a story.

PaynesGrey Tue 23-Sept-25 18:08:36

FGT. You can indulge in childish piss-taking with silly emojis as much as you like. It's your modus operandi. We all know that. Why do you do it?

Gender issues cause a huge amount of debate among people with differing views. It's a hot topic on this board from time to time. It's an idealogical debate where people have different opinions.

Unless you are arguing that people are not allowed to have opposing views.

Millions of people will have worked for employers and then discovered their views don't or no longer accord with the majority - so they leave and find an employer they feel more comfortable with. Moore wasn't cancelled. She said so herself.

Lingua Franca are donating 20% of the proceeds from their logoed sweatshirt collection celebrating factual journalism to The Guardian. That is their choice and prerogative. It's not much of a story so why is the DT making such a fuss about it?

Galaxy Tue 23-Sept-25 17:57:38

A number of female journalists have raised concerns about the Guardians stance on the gender issue. I think it was Hadley Freeman who talked about bullying and a lack of courage there on this issue.
To be honest if as a newspaper you report that men are women I view you in the same way I view the News of the World.

TerriBull Tue 23-Sept-25 17:56:57

I do read the Guardian, on line, as well as the DM because they're free. I wouldn't subscribe to either if they do go behind a paywall. The Guardian is one of my go to places for book reviews along with The ST. We only buy one paper a week and that is the ST, usually I'm still reading their articles into the week. Occasionally my husband brings home The I. If we were to subscribe to a daily paper online it would be The Times.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 23-Sept-25 17:44:35

An ‘ideological issue’. 😂

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 23-Sept-25 17:43:39

Our eldest daughter subscribes to The Guardian. We’ve had some pretty feisty opinion swaps at times over the years! We are still close though. Blood is thicker than newspaper print. 😁

PaynesGrey Tue 23-Sept-25 17:41:59

Suzanne Moore simply moved to another paper over an ideological issue.

She said herself:

I do not want to be melodramatic. Free speech in law is a qualified, not absolute right. Employment-wise I have not been harmed nor cancelled nor silenced.
