The Guardian losing money? Who would have thought?

The Guardian do have a magic money tree in the form of the Scott Trust, it insulates them from reality and allows them to carry on with their deluded nonsense. Much as the Labour government's fiscal model is to borrow and tax its way into oblivion, with no regard for consequence.

And let’s not forget that not only was the Scott Trust set up in the first place so as to avoid inheritance tax, it also pays no income or corporation tax!

Yes, comrades … the broadest shoulders sure are carrying the heaviest burden.

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

She misrepresented the position. See the post from PaynesGrey.

I have subscribed to the Guardian for many years. I also buy the I newspaper a couple of times a week. Read the Daily Mail online to get a different viewpoint and usually end up with a nasty taste in my mouth.

Hadley Freeman also left The Guardian citing an "atmosphere of fear" surrounding the gender debate, their loss Sunday Times's gain.

I can’t find this story reported elsewhere. It seems unlikely to be true, given the profits were declared only two weeks ago. Maybe it’s wishful thinking from the Telegraph, which genuinely has been in serious financial difficulties.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 23-Sept-25 17:27:48

Nope. I cross reference with the Daily Mail and the ‘i’ paper (to which I also subscribe. I bought the ‘i’ on its very first day as a paper copy. It was 20p if IRC.

The Guardian used to be The Manchester Guadian. Which is where I live. Fond memories of that newspaper. Better by far than its derivative. Although I do like Marina Hyde she makes me laugh and is very scathing.

I see Suzanne Moore (an ex Guardian columnist) now writes for the Telegraph after she could no longer tolerate the Guardian’s woolly stance on trans women. Actually I don’t know for sure whether she left of her own accord or was cancelled by said Guardian. 🤷‍♀️

It was in The Telegraph Casdon.
Where else?

Well you made me laugh, anyway! The Telegraph was sold earlier this year, after a disastrous financial outturn in 2024. Hey Ho.

pressgazette.co.uk/news/telegraph-record-loss-financial-irregularities-operating-profit-increase/

Seriously though, do you actually believe what it says in the Telegraph without checking it out elsewhere?

Magenta8 Tue 23-Sept-25 16:36:41

Why are you so anti Guardian FGT? Their reporting is far less biased than The Daily Telegraph.

I used to read both and I know which one I now prefer. The Telegraph used to be a decent right wing paper but now.confusedsad

keepingquiet Tue 23-Sept-25 16:36:20

FGT is one of the few names I recognise on here, but she (he?) they have really shot themselves in the foot here... probably the right foot too!

PaynesGrey Tue 23-Sept-25 16:32:48

I already say that. Read the thread yout started.

The Scott Trust has been the sole shareholder in Guardian Media Group since 1936, when John Russell Scott renounced his family’s stake in the Guardian and transferred ownership to a group of trustees. The shareholders of the Scott Trust take no dividend from the business. All of GMG’s profits are reinvested in journalism and do not benefit a proprietor or shareholders.

The Guardian US expects to hit $44 million in voluntary reader donations in the U.S. and Canada alone this year, up 33 percent over last year, with some people supporting on a recurring basis and others giving one-time contributions.

Now why do people think that might be? Independent journalism, perhaps?

And the Guardian is not behind a paywall, unlike The Telegraph which exists to make money for its shareholders.

We could discuss the Barclay brothers and their decades of tax avoidance.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 23-Sept-25 16:24:37

A fifth of the profits from the Lingua Franca sales will go to the newspaper to support its journalism apparently.

Can you post the link to your source please FriedGreenTomatoes2?

I always prefer to see where information comes from, and checked their latest figures:

‘The Guardian Media Group published its financial results today, showing the company generated revenues of £275.9m with impressive growth in all regions. Total revenues increased by £18.1 million to £275.9m (from £257.8m in 2023/24). Adjusted cash outflow for the operating business decreased to £24.3m (2024: £36.5m).11 Sept 2025

PaynesGrey

One from the collection.

Not bad.

Forgot to ask, what are the jumpers made of? Are they sweatshirts, or proper wool? 🐑 🐐
I don't want any prickly material.

Never let the whoe story get in the way of a cheap headline.

www.theguardian.com/gnm-press-office/2025/sep/22/the-guardian-and-lingua-franca-launch-new-collection-in-support-of-independent-journalism

These are being sold in the USA.

The Guardian's "The Whole Picture campaign" supports independent journalism: 20% of profits benefit theguardian.org, with the mission to advance and inform public discourse and citizen participation around the most pressing issues of our time.

The slogans are:

• for facts’ sake
• facts are sacred
• the whole picture
• fiercely independent

With Trump lying through his teeth every day there has never been a better time.

Better we have independent journalism than The Telegraph, owned by the tax avoiding Barclay Brothers now sold to US equity firm RedBirdCapital which has significant links to China.

www.theguardian.com/media/2025/aug/13/ngo-urge-nandy-halt-sale-telegraph-china-links

RedBirdCapital also seems keen to take over and break up ITV.

I don't know * FriedGreenTomatoes*.
Something like, " I'm woven on the bias."

winterwhite Tue 23-Sept-25 15:59:26

And The Times seems to have more and more full page ads.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 23-Sept-25 15:50:30

And which slogan escaped?
There are 5 to choose from.

“Go woke Go broke” is sold out.
Only joking!

escaped Tue 23-Sept-25 15:48:04

What colour are they please?
I rather fancy bottle green or cerise this season.

M0nica Tue 23-Sept-25 15:45:20

The Guardian has been losing money for years. That is common knowledge. nearly all newspapers are struggling to survive. I beleieve that the Daily Telegraph has also been operating at a loss for sometime, although iti does now seem to be recovering and look at the Independent and many e\vening papers. Gone online or died.

Publsishing newspapersis not an easy pitch

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 23-Sept-25 15:39:33

Apparently one can support this newspaper by buying a £281 jumper with a ‘Guardian’ slogan on it.

Any takers? 😁
