Do you think we lose our sense of humour as we get older?

The last time I had a really good laugh was at Michael McIntyre. I laughed till I cried and could hardly breathe. It was a bit scary though. My glasses filled up with tears and normal breathing was a struggle!
I used to laugh a lot at work as I had some hilarious colleagues. I don't find so much to laugh at these days though.

I started reading MN when I retired and had more time some yesrs back. Many of the threads then were so funny and full of sharp wit. Had me laughing out loud to myself.

There don't seem to be so many now, but maybe I don't spend as much time there. I have never read the same quick humour on GN. I don't think it is an age thing. I think 15 or more years ago life was more relaxed maybe more time to laugh and for threads to get longer and funnier. Today we are all more ground down and easily offended.

I must root around on MN as I need a laugh. I used to laugh such a lot at Dead Ringers on radio 4, but not so much now and am not sure why it or I have changed.

See if any of these make anyone chuckle. I sit with my legs up on my sofa to eat my meals. I am disabled have a rare hereditary neurological condition. My hands shake all the time . I have to put a teatowel and kitchen roll over my clothes .. I used my right hand couple of weeks ago as I went to put the spoon of porridge into my mouth missed and some went on the carpet on the left side in my slipper and some on the top of my other slipper. 🤣

Not long after my dad died my mom was walking back from the village and a friend of my brother's pulled up in his new car and gave mom a life home . Mom said he had his friend with him and they where always dressed smartly. Mom invited them in for cake and tea. Mom said they where happy together. My brother told her they where gay mom said I know they are always such happy boys 😂

When she was in her 80's she said you know 2 men together how do they have sex. I said ok I will tell you but you need to be certain before I do..She thought about it and said no better not know.

Another time she was talking about another friend if my brother's and she asked why she hadn't meet a nice man . My brother said she's a dyke mom said I know she rides a motorbike and that what woman are called who ride a bike 🤦.

When a teenager we said mom would you like a French letter . She said no as I don't read French. 🤣

Others may not find them funny but always made me laugh.
My daughter described taking me out with my grandsons as trying to herd cats.

Lots of TV programmes made me laugh .And clips of comics like Dave Allen ,2 Ronnie's , Jethro ,Ken Dodd, Victoria Wood ,Sarah Millican,Billy Connolly. Comics who are funny. Not like some as I called comics . Love shows like Mrs Brown's boys, Miranda ,Taskmaster ,Monty python,Falwty towers, The good life ,To the manor born and the like. Not this pc rubbish that isn't funny . When you think Benny Hill ,Carry on films would never be made now . As the young today are to thin skinned .

There are many things on GN that make me laugh . But it all depends on your sense of humour and how broad minded you are . As some people can a offence at the slightest thing.

After my husband died I remember a talk show saying people who live alone don't laugh . What rubbish. I laugh everyday granted sometimes at myself but that's me .

GN has become a lot more serious since I joined. We never used to feel we had to put ‘lighthearted’ after a thread title.

So true! I think about some evenings we've spent with friends and the things that have been said that should get us 'cancelled' in some people's uptight minds! Whatever one says someone will be along to claim a pseudo offence. I find my self often laughing at MN's intensity about the smallest things and wanting to write Oh, do grow up.

I do agree.
I was on MN when twas all fields and the humour was fabulous. It's still there occasionally but mostly far too serious and so many easily offended.
I don't find it as witty on here tbh which is why I spend more time on MN.

There are some real wits on Mumsnet, threads can be so funny they have me laughing out loud. We do have the odd thread like that on Gransnet, but I so miss MissAdventure because she has such a great sense of fun, she never fails to cheer us up.

What happened to misadventure? Is she ill?

A friend and I were asked ( more like told) to leave an Ann Summers shop.
It was at the time when the Rampant Rabbit came to Ann Summers. We had imbibed somewhat when she thought it would be a good idea to go to the shop and see what all the fuss was about.
To be fair the manager did ask us to keep the howling laughter down but that made it worse 😂
Then we got our marching orders.

Some years ago I knew a dominatrix. Much merriment was had with her stories 😂

Oh, our sense of humour expands as we get older due to the experiences we collect, both positive and negative. This bears out the saying "well you have to laugh or you'll end up crying".

My darling father was in a hospice, we were all in the room, his nurse came in and said how are you Mr X he replied bloody marvellous we all chuckled, they were the last words he spoke.

We still chuckle many years later, like you say FGT2 gallows humour.

I remember my late darling mum chatting with friends over a glass of wine when one asked “what did he die from in the end?”
Mum “lack of oxygen”.
Cracked me up anyway. Gallows humour, not to everyone’s taste.

I’ve not read the thread, sorry - but my immediate thought is you’d have to have one to start with.

Actually Kandinsky just reading through after a few hours out, you have a point on here at least, ‘driving not safe?’. ‘Partner and hobby’ ‘neighbour problem’ none of which raise even a slight twitch of the mouth upwards.

I love a good chuckle or belly-laugh and still have them from time to time.
Many will disagree but Cockney Comedian Micky Flanagan has me rolling about.

The fact is, Mumsnetters are allowed to get away with so much more than we are on Gransnet.
It's also fast-paced.

There used to be a long running pub thing on here a while ago called the Captains Bar or something like that. It was funny but not everybody liked it.

MN can be really funny and some of the comments are hilarious.

Definitely The Argy we had Jude Law tied up in the cellar after George Clooney escaped, and the Llamas well…

Thank you. And I would like to add that mum was on absolutely no drugs at all. So her laughter was entirely natural.

That’s a lovely post.

You know this might sound a bit weird.

But mum died at 101 and during her last afternoon (she died at 8.30pm,) she was largely asleep and talking to various members of the family and laughing so much, - it was a joy to listen to.

So laughter lasts until death😄😄🥲
