One final word - I thought the term gypsy was offensive so perhaps that is what dotpocka meant when she said xenophobia is getting worse on here.

Apparently, he's a boxer who is an Irish traveller, as distinct from Romany.

Tyson doesn't find the term Gypsy offensive.
He wears clothes with " Gypsy King " on the front.
He's an Irish traveller, he's a Romany, same thing .
What is offensive is if you call a traveller a diddicoi .

At least some of you have learnt something from my threads so not all bad .

I don't think Irish traveller and Romany is necessarily the same thing.

Babs03 Tue 30-Sept-25 13:34:57

Aren’t the Romany people from Romania?

Maybe hundreds of years ago. There are now Irish and English Travellers. They both have different ways .
English Travellers don't take their children out of school unless they're travelling. They don't let their daughters marry at such a young age .
Then there are the fairground people, they are Travellers too
Different again.

Maybe you could educate yourself.
Romany and Irish travellers are 2 distinct separate peoples.
It’s obvious that the only knowledge you have is admiring an Irish traveler boxer.

I am sorry when I watched the series about the Fury family, I found her a bit of a madam, I know some of the time it is what the director wants, but her mum Paris, seemed to be continually screeching her name and there was something about the Christening of the youngest child where she seemed to want to make all about her. I am sorry I can not get excited/pleased about any celebrities children's engagement.

Romany's (sic) are English Travellers
Apart from your term “Romany’s” which makes no sense, no they are not.
Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish Traveller people belong to minority ethnic groups that have contributed to British society for centuries. Their distinctive way of life and traditions manifest themselves in nomadism, the centrality of their extended family, unique languages and entrepreneurial economy. It is reported that there are around 300,000 Travellers in the UK and they are one of the most disadvantaged groups. The real population may be different as some members of these communities do not participate in the census.
The Traveller Movement works predominantly with ethnic Romani (Gypsy), Roma, and Irish Traveller Communities.

Nanato3 Tue 30-Sept-25 18:32:03

What I'm trying to get across is Irish Travellers and English Travellers are 2 different types of people.

What about the fairground community ? They are Travellers too . Again different to the English and the Irish Traveller.

I wish I'd never started this thread . Unfortunately it's not has lighthearted as I wanted it to be hmm

Well,I've just joined Gransnet and having second thoughts already!

OldFrill Tue 30-Sept-25 18:44:45

Tyson Fury calls himself the Gypsy King as his father John was known as the Gypsy King. Although of Irish heritage (he was born in England and holds a British passport) Tyson promotes and supports the rights of all travelling communities. Maybe something we could spend more time doing rather than arguing the various and convoluted definitions of these people.

What do you class the fairground community has ?
They class themselves as Travellers and I'm talking about the English.

Catgran please do not have second thoughts. This thread has just gone off topic a bit.

No, Fairground folk do not class themselves as Travellers.

They are Showpeople, not an ethnic minority, and they have their own long-established Showmen's Guild.

Circus people are also known as Showpeople, I believe.
I know about three people who are or were, working in travelling circuses, at least two travelling to locations overseas. They are very talented.

Don't worry, there are some strong opinions on here - particularly News/Politics - but there can also be a lot of support and empathy too.

Having read the whole thread the main thing that struck me is that the subject of the thread is 16!!

I feel very sad that her whole life is set on a teenage choice.

I am relieved that I was allowed to grow up into my twenties to make a more mature decision on my life choices.
