This subject has popped up on another thread.

Round these parts, in real life, if someone calls another person rich, we all grin at each other.

I never knew it was was a problem to some.
Cant see how it can be.
I dont get the problem.

I am wondering if it is different in different areas.
I live in a small rural area.
Fairly surrounded by second or fourth property owners.

I don't know anyone on a personal level who I would consider rich, most people in my friendship group are on the same level as ourselves, I know some who were on a higher income during their working lives but we have about the same current living standards these days. Perhaps it's the area you live in ?, is it said a half mocking way as if a joke?

I take it you are not referring to a sociological discussion, but to gossip.

One of our more peculiar threads😄😄

Often the people who brag about it most.....have the least. What a very strange place you must live in fancythat.

My neighbour, a police inspector’s widow, is constantly telling me, she has so much money, she doesn’t know what to do with it. And I keep constantly replying , give it to your children now, so that they can avoid a huge inheritance tax bill. She talks as if she’s a millionaire 😫

I used to have a friend who had a lot of money.
I decided that not being friends with her because of her riches was as unethical as cutting her off because she was poor.
I now have some friends who are very well off but have much less happy lives than mine.
There are always people who are a lot worse off, and not through any fault of their own.

Only the nouveau riche talk about it. Vulgar, darling, vulgar.b

I would never ever say to someone you must be rich/wealthy.
It is none of my business.
I also would not make any remark ,envious or otherwise when someone actually tells me subtly of the fact.
Examples from the two friends mentioned up thread, one told me that had bought a copy of the Worlds top hotels to see how many they had stayed at.
The other told me recently she had had her accountant visit to help her fill in her tax return.
She was going on holiday and the accountant asked her if she wanted to know just how large her tax bill was or to wait until she had enjoyed her holiday.

RosieandherMaw Wed 15-Oct-25 10:42:27

It's such a snide comment - rarely if ever meant kindly- unpleasant, showing inverted snobbery and probably envy.

I used to work with a women when went on numerous holidays and mini-breaks every year. I happened to mention that I had a dishwasher and she looked at me scornfully and said "Oooh how the rich live." From then on she thought it was terribly funny to go on about wealthy I must be at every given opportunity.

Millie22 Wed 15-Oct-25 10:24:48

Don't people generally refer to others as wealthy rather than rich.

That is if they are going to comment at all.

fancythat Wed 15-Oct-25 10:23:10

Clearly, my areas are out of step nationally.

Kate1949 Wed 15-Oct-25 10:22:52

Not something I'll ever have to worry about!

fancythat Wed 15-Oct-25 10:21:26

It is an everyday subject.
Just like everything else is an everyday subject.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 15-Oct-25 10:19:42

I just do not get the fascination with whether or not someone is rich.

What on earth has how much they have in their bank account, how much their house is worth etc got to do with anything or anyone?

fancythat Wed 15-Oct-25 10:19:12

Oreo

Why do you all grin at each other fancythat when a rich person is mentioned?confused

I meant when the person says it to the other persons' face.
Both grin.

Normal behaviour around here.
And where I was growing up too.
All perfectly normal behaviour.

Usedtobeblonde Wed 15-Oct-25 10:18:18

I know a couple of people, friends really, who are rich , in my terms anyway and boy, they do like to let others know.
The rest of us smile and carry on.

fancythat Wed 15-Oct-25 10:13:41

So do people talk about it behind closed doors?

People say, do not talk about religion and politics.
Wealth is never mentioned as a taboo.

Oreo Wed 15-Oct-25 10:12:39

The only rich thing in our household is a pack of rich tea biscuits.

Cabbie21 Wed 15-Oct-25 10:12:04

Nobody else’s business.

Speaking about one’s own money (richness) or others is just not on.

Crumbs,

Looks like our area is unique!

It is talked about just like anything else.
