What do you think when someone calls you rich (when you are rich)?

This subject has popped up on another thread.

Round these parts, in real life, if someone calls another person rich, we all grin at each other.

I never knew it was was a problem to some.
Cant see how it can be.
I dont get the problem.

I am wondering if it is different in different areas.
I live in a small rural area.
Fairly surrounded by second or fourth property owners.

Where we used to live all the white. vans were outside the houses where the tradesmen lived. Evenings and weekends, there was a van in every drive.

We knew most of them because we had used them some time or another. Lovely men everyone of them.,worked hard and worked well.

I don’t think it is a class thing really.
I was brought up and still remain very working class but inate good manners tell me not to discuss such things which may cause division or offence.

You might be rich if you’re one of those who think £195 for a 2.1kg M&S Christmas Beef Wellington is reasonable.
To be fair, it serves 6 and there’s no prep, but you still have to cook it!

They don't send a chef round to cook it for that price? 😲

I did look at Tom Kerridge's Marlow pub menu.
We've booked for 12 of us for Sunday lunch. 😁
Only £175 pp.
The thing is, it's not something you can keep and admire.

Unless you bring it up later😁

😂😂😂

Politics, money and religion are not discussed in polite society. It's a class thing

If you have food in your fridge . Clean water , a roof over your head , friends or family, good health and access to health care then in my book you are rich indeed .

Quite agree this is a strange subject, but it sparked a memory from a few months ago. A friend and I were invited out to lunch by another old friend, over from Canada. We had a great time and when the friend from Canada went off to the loo after paying our bill, I commented that her invitation to us was a really nice thing to have done. My friend said:
'Yes, but she can afford it!'. I was shocked at this sort of throwaway sneer! What on earth does someone's bank account have to do with a kind invitation to lunch?

I will admit to getting it wrong a couple of times, paying the bill when it wasnt expected, just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

It’s easy to offend by being too keen to be generous.

How odd. I think I know what you're talking about but I'm just not sure because it's written in a very muddled way.

Is it a grin of embarrassment? Or a smirk of satisfaction? Or something else?
That’s what I would like to know.

Perhaps The Grin is a rural equivalent to a freemason’s handshake?

Eh??

“Richard Murphy on:

Britain’s property addiction: how politics has built a broken market”

Totally agree incentives have been government policy for decades, far too much invested' which has inflated prices vastly

Thank you MaizieD for admitting your error. Going by someone else's explanation, who wasn't directly involved, probably confused the issue.
Doodledog's post was incorrect.

I don't think so. But the other thread is there if anyone cares enough to check.

I suppose this is why threads about threads are discouraged.

Speaking about one’s own money (richness) or others is just not on.

Crumbs,

Looks like our area is unique!

It is talked about just like anything else.

Crumbs,

Seems like not only are you 'rich' but you are naive too!

In East Finchley, there’s Bishops Avenue and a more depressing road is hard to find. Some of the huge houses look abandoned and it makes for a very unpleasant walk. I guess foreign princes and super rich live there but…. Give me suburbia any time. It’s quite near Kenwood House which is a gem.

I used to live around the corner! In a not so grand house😂.
40 years ago they were occupied London mansions of the extremely rich. Nowadays they are just owned as investments.

Oops! Sorry Allira and thanks Oreo. I still think it was funny!

Wealth comes to us in different ways, it could be money but it could be what we truly value in our lives, people, health, access to beautiful countryside or cities, rich in what we grow, or rich in knowledge, so many ways.

The appearance of being affluent is also sometimes just that!

Talking about wealth to neighbours sounds quite crass to me and not the norm, though there are always people that brag, if it make them feel better then so be it.
