Kitchen Thoughts and Annoyances

I need poultry scissors. From what I have read, the ones with a straight handle on one side and a loop on the other, tend to slither, so I think I need a double loop pair. Saw James Martin spatchcocking a chicken in a nano second using such a device. I have failed to find any. Thoughts gratefully received, please!

Secondly, has anyone used one of those electric pie makers? If so, how useful are they and how difficult/easy to clean? I hasten to add that I am quite capable of making pastry but, at the moment, I have limited ability to use an oven (it does not work!!).

Thirdly, who else cringes about being "reached out to"? Or is it just me? Ask me a question by all means but I do not want a naffing hug!

Paperbackwriter

It is The Law (or should be) that no-one should use the phrase "reach out" unless they are a member of the Four Tops.

Agree

The Four Tops can repeat it as often as they like.

I had no idea what a pie maker is so Googled it and discovered it is like a toastie maker only obviously with pastry and filling. The blurb says it is good for pies because you don’t need to precook the bottom of the pie and it will be brown and crispy. This is a gadget I can manage without!

Ha I don't eat meat. I don't cook pies. I don't like gadgets they look untidy and as I shy away from cooking( hate it) I don't have the need

WithNobsOnIt Tue 21-Oct-25 17:15:46

Do you get four and twenty blackbirds to bake in a pie with the Blackbird gadget and a recipe on how to make pastry and cook it?

Did not know that pie makers existed.Sound like a real palaver.
I bet the servants and cooks in Upstairs Downstairs and Downton did not have them!

As for the cringeworthy Reaching Out. It is so phoney that is should be banned.

A few years ago l even found my Solicitor using it in correspondence to me about my case.

Reach out and touch somebody's hand . Make this world a better place. Tacy song Supreme.

I also hate Heads Up, Smashed it and So. The last one is used by people who think they have something interesting to say and you are a bit thick.

Rant over.

Have a nice day. Ho Ho.

Hum - Like people who 'share' rather than just telling me!

rowyn Tue 21-Oct-25 16:58:15

Don't worry - my arms are too short for reaching out..... am forever looking for taller people in supermarkets who can reach up to the top shelf for me!
Just a thought - if you have a TK Maxx nearby, they usually have a lot of Kitchen devices.
Never heard of a pie maker - am having some weird visions of a robot with pastry.

CeliaT52 Tue 21-Oct-25 15:04:07

Oh yes … have a lovely one in the shape of a blackbird!

Bought a spiralizer when we were in SW as they kept banging on about eating vegetables that way. bought it it is now gathering dust on top of the cupboard never opened.
mandolins are lethal would never have one in my kitchen!
to be honest if I cannot do it with a spoon and a bowl I don't do it!

kittylester Tue 21-Oct-25 14:50:41

Beeping phone - PIE maker

kittylester Tue 21-Oct-25 14:50:01

We don't need a piece maker - we live near the Brockleby's factory and they deliver.

Sleepyhead52 Tue 21-Oct-25 14:46:39

Erm ... what's a pie maker? Anyone ... smile

dalrymple23 Tue 21-Oct-25 14:01:51

Thank you everyone! Many giggles.

Shel1951 Tue 21-Oct-25 13:53:50

All those new expressions make me cringe...reaching out,
On a journey,
Find myself...
Well if you don't know where you are you shouldn't be left out alone.
And finally starting every sentence with a prolonged loud sigh and the word so...

I'm getting old

Patsytaylor Tue 21-Oct-25 13:49:51

I'm a gadget person. Love my pie maker!

Gogo84 Tue 21-Oct-25 13:47:29

My favourite "gadget" a plastic thingy which opens ring pull cans ie sardine tins. Impossible for my old fingers

Jeanie28 Tue 21-Oct-25 13:47:04

I hate "reaching out to", just like I hate "going forward" and a lot of other modern day phrases.

Maremia Tue 21-Oct-25 12:38:01

Love it, that those wee family treasures are still in use, thanks.

ExDancer Tue 21-Oct-25 11:22:02

What does 'reaching out to' actually mean?
I can 'reach out' to grab the baby before he falls downstairs, or to help my arthritic dog into the car, but if I want someone to help me - I ask, I don't reach out to them.

henetha Tue 21-Oct-25 11:13:12

I don't like phrases like 'reached out to', but I quite like having a hug.
Sadly I don't make pies any more, but I did buy a Ginster's pasty yesterday.

Doodledog Tue 21-Oct-25 11:07:27

I have a blackbird pie funnel, but it only gets used for family-sized pies, not the diddy ones made in the pie maker.

I haven't used the pie maker for a while, and this thread has reminded me that it's a useful thing, so I'll have a think about fillings and batch cook at the weekend 🤔

grandMattie Tue 21-Oct-25 05:14:57

Agree with reaching out, ditto opening up.
I can’t bear the learning curves either!
Never make pies so don’t need the funnel thingy or pie maker , but I was given a totally redundant cherry stoner.

windmill1 Tue 21-Oct-25 05:10:46

"reached out to"? Well, thanks but no thanks!

People who want to "reach out" have obviously never heard the saying "familiarity breeds contempt."

And it does.

Redhead56 Tue 21-Oct-25 00:55:37

I use a black bird for large family pie to release air. I have Salter pie maker it comes with pastry cutter it’s brilliant. I bought it online it never fails good results every time be it home made or shop bought pastry.

cornergran Mon 20-Oct-25 23:19:28

I use my Mum's blackbird in pies. It’s not a pie without it. smile.

Can’t help with a pie maker or indeed chicken shears. Don’t use either.

Reaching out? Well if it’s a toddler wanting to give me a hug that’s wonderful, otherwise no, a hundred times no. If you want something just ask! If anyone wants to open up in my kitchen they’ll be handed a tin opener or the key to open the window.
