Breakfast in bed, yes or no?

I have just read an excerpt from Baroness Glenconner’s book.
It describes how at house parties all the married ladies received breakfast in bed.

It seems a very outdated practice.

I cannot think of anything worse than eating in bed or even a bedroom for that matter.

Now a cup of tea is more than acceptable bit food a big fat NO!

Would you relish a breakfast tray in bed?

Yuck. I loathe breakfast in bed. Quite, quite different to a cuppa and book in bed!
One year, my lovely DCs made it for me on Mothering Sunday, my heart sank. I valiantly ate it, showering them with compliments and gratitude. Mercifully, it was a one off!

My DH is an earlier riser than I am and brings me up a cup of tea every morning and toast on a Sunday.
When the children were growing up he always did their Sunday breakfast downstairs and brought mine up insisting I had a bit of time to myself.
I am very lucky and don't think I would swap him!

Looking at the daily activities, early rising and commitments of lots of Grans, some lolling about ought to be de rigeur - at least sometimes. Mine is over breakfast. It’s extremely rare for me not to have a breakfast tray in bed. I love it and am so grateful to the dear someone who regularly provides it.

However, this can never involve anything - like toast - which might include the risk of even a stray crumb or two either on or in the bed! Horror! Each day tea and a bowl of something with oats: banana, pear, melon, chia seeds, dried red currants or blueberries, walnuts and a spoonful of Greek yoghurt. Delicious - to me. In winter, maybe porridge. No crumbs, stains or drama and a daily treat which wakes me up and sets me up for a morning’s activities.

Sometimes we all need little things to remind us we’re actually retired.

No never. I like my breakfast in my conservatory, watching headlines, or weather outside.

Absolutely breakfast in bed - the warmest place in the house!

I like to be up for breakfast but usually in my dressing gown as like to start the day slowly. I think the last time I had breakfast in bed was after my youngest DD was born 39 years ago.

Breakfast in bed everyday, thank you. It’s the only way to start the day. When our grandson learned of this he said ‘grandpa that’s crazy’. But I still get served and have my coffee and toast while looking out over the garden and reading the paper.

The problem with evn a cup of tea in bed is that I then feel disinclined to get up and loll about for far too long.

I am nursing what I believe is a sprained ankle. It is terribly painful. I limped downstairs at 7.45 and checked on my husband who sleeps there due to a severe stroke.

He didn’t want a cup of tea so I made myself one and brought it back to bed and it is bliss up here! The sun is pouring in double aspect windows and I am propped up on a V cushion. If only someone would bring me some toast! No chance of that now.

I sympathise. Have got a dental abscess but have had to soldier on due to DH also having had a stroke. I do get my own cuppa in the morning and see if DH wants one but usually is just me. Am afraid brekkie in bed is just not going to happen. But anyway just think of the crumbs and butter stains.

MrJ used to bring me toast and tea at the weekends when I was working.
Since I retired I’m up, washed and dressed straight away and don’t eat until around mid day, 16 hour fasting

I don’t care for breakfast either, and could never eat it in bed. DH and I always took turns to make a cup of coffee which we drank in bed. This is still the way I start my day, but the coffee is now acccompanied by two digestive biscuits.

A cup of tea in bed every morning, courtesy of DH, is much appreciated. When we first got an airfryer, a bacon bun suddenly appeared as well. Not often repeated though.

I do nowadays because some of my meds have to be taken with food. It’s a very light breakfast though and I have one of those hospital tables that goes over the bed.

Common as muck, me. Never had breakfast in bed. An early riser all my life.
Back in the day I would have been the servant sweeping up the toast crumbs from the sheets.

No, not even a cup of tea in bed. When I'm awake (between 6.30 and 7.30, usually), I get up.

tanith Sun 26-Oct-25 08:07:03

No to breakfast in bed but I get up and bring a cuppa up to bed everyday for myself.

ViceVersa Sun 26-Oct-25 08:04:03

I don't think I've ever had breakfast in bed, nor would I want to.

Bellasnana Sun 26-Oct-25 07:59:21

I don’t often eat breakfast at all but would not enjoy eating in bed.

I do take my early morning cuppa back to bed though. DH used to bring it to me but I’ve had to get used to making my own for the past ten years.

MaizieD Sun 26-Oct-25 07:59:16

I’ve no objection whatsoever to breakfast in bed, it’s just something I’m rarely offered 😆

A cup of tea or two, thanks to DH, has been standard for many years and much appreciated.

Very occasionally I will have breakfast in bed Usually if I’m unwell or sometimes on my birthday - but only if one of the children is home. For my 60th birthday younger son bought me one of those wonderful wooden trays with collapsible legs! He remembered me admiring one on a Poirot!

teabagwoman Sun 26-Oct-25 07:51:59

I have a tea tray in my bedroom and take a cup of tea back to bed with me while my brain comes on line. Breakfast in bed always feels as though it would be a luxury but somehow never delivers. These days I’d have to make it myself.

BlueBelle Sun 26-Oct-25 07:51:07

I ve never had breakfast in bed and would never want it my mind associates it with being ill Not even a cuppa, up and moving that’s me I m very much a morning person I slouch in the evenings, still wouldn’t eat in bed though

GrannyGravy13 Sun 26-Oct-25 07:49:57

Always have tea in bed every single day (curtesy of my butler (DH))

When I have been up early to send a GC off to school early (twice a week) I take a latte and toast back upstairs and lounge on top of the bed watching morning news.

foxie48 Sun 26-Oct-25 07:45:38

No to breakfast but OH has brought me a pot of tea every morning since we first got together. I'm sitting here now with a tray on my bed enjoying my first cup of tea, listening to the radio and looking at the sun shining on the Malvern hills. Bliss!
