What better to do right after breakfast, after all, than make a den?

Grandmabatty Mon 27-Oct-25 10:27:17

My two boys love making dens in my living room too. Have fun

Oh, I loved it when they were that age!!

Flippinheck Mon 27-Oct-25 10:30:25

Gosh, I wish my g’dtrs were still young enough to do this. Enjoy!

I remember when the DGD made hand puppets and used to put on a show, making up a play and popping up from behind the sofa with different voices! 😁

Farmor15 Mon 27-Oct-25 10:34:28

Ours were doing that at 6-30 this morning! Easiest to leave them at itsmile. 2 lots are visiting- with parents, so rather chaotic.

Ps I bought felt hand puppet kits from a Pound Shop, also available at Hobbycraft, the Range etc etc.

They're easy for small fingers to stitch with pre-punched holes.
Good for a rainy day.

Gone are the large folding wooden clothes airers, they were marvellous for making tents with blankets and sheets.
The modern pop up metal ones just don’t fit the bill.

We still have two of those - they were ideal for making blanket tents/forts. I think they belonged to my late in-laws, so I dread to think how old they are, but they are used also regularly for washing.

Do they have the webbing to enable them to fold either way?

Old, clean of course, socks make great hand puppets.

My mum used to let us have the old foldout clothes house and a sheet for us to make a den……if we were very lucky she would let us have an annex under the dining table too. Happy days!

Yes, they do!

We have had two GC staying since Saturday, another two joined us yesterday.

Consequently four here today, one has been packed off to sports camp for a couple of hours, I have taken the youngest three to an indoor trampoline centre.

The GC’s bedroom and playroom look like a bombs gone off and their stuff is migrating around the house 🤷‍♀️

Aww bless ‘em Mine love doing this too. It’s clean muck as my old mum used to say 🤣

GSs too

Happy days! Used to have dens here years ago when the grandchildren were little. We had to pretend we didn’t know where they were!

Bazza Tue 28-Oct-25 14:07:41

Enjoy it while you can before the dreaded mobile phones take over their imagination and ability to play!

Yes, I remember doing that and with my DC. 🙂

These hand puppets were in the Pound shop, should have been much more but, yes, they were just a pound each.
That was a while ago now, though.

My youngest GS is just 6 and loves playing memory games and others from Orchard Toys. I'll miss it when he grows out of them.
My oldest GC, now 14 and 11, used to love exactly the same games, and will still bring them out to play when we visit. The memory games are good for all ages, my GS often beats us, just like his mother used to when she was his age. Most of the other games we play are games of chance, when you turn over a card to see if there is a match on your "shopping list", so not much skill involved.

The young grand kids that l know would think that an old fashioned den as a private place where they could use their tablets, mobile phones etc. Without Adult Supervision.

Give it up for good old Sooty and Sweep hand puppets and Harry Corbett.

This den was made at a Tablets Off! time, and they don’t have mobiles anyway. I dare say Gdd1 will be allowed one next year, when she starts senior school.

Oh what fun! I remember those days with our two big dogs joining in!
Make the most of it.
We've been learning the verbs aller and faire here. 😴

I imagine it will be much a happier time in about weeks time when you have recovered! grin

I spent nearly the whole day after they’d gone home, very peacefully finishing and sewing up the octopus I’ve posted about in Arts and Crafts.
Today I’m wrapping him up for the postman on Monday. 🙂
