As my name suggests, I really love watching dragonflies fluttering about and have just realised that I didn't see any this year. I live in a rural area and, until this summer, used to stop and admire them in the hedgerows when out walking my dog. Was it because of the length of unusually extreme heat we had do you think? I know I wasn't taking the dog out until the sun went down, so perhaps that's it. (I know, I answered my own question really!) Did any of you spot any this year?

Just a few this year in/over our little pond.
Some years we have lots.

We regularly have them in our garden, during the Summer, normally later in the day.
We have a pond & so do next door, but otherwise no other water around.
There are a lot of fields & hedgerows around us.
They are the very large type Dragonflies

The large ones are the ones I have always seen, beautiful iridescent blues and greens. I'm in South Norfolk. I'm so glad some of us have seen them this year; thank you for putting my mind at rest smile

We have another dragonfly lover on here -*dragonfly46*.

Yes, we saw a few this year and never saw any around the garden until about three years ago.
Sometimes they venture into the conservatory and I have to usher them out as they're too large for the bee catcher.

We were driving along a lochside on holiday in August, with the windows open, and a large golden creature blew in. Have never seen one that colour.
Had to stop, to get it out safely.
It was beautiful.

We have a large pond. Lots of damsel and dragonflies this year, plus newts .

Regular visitors to our garden, the benefit of a small river behind our fence. Love watching them. I find the toads under every container less appealing though!

Yes here in Somerset but quite late in the summer.

DollyRocker Sun 09-Nov-25 14:54:36

Urban dweller here. Unfortunately a lot of the gardens round here are paved, decked or concrete eyesores, unattractive for wildlife, mine is pretty lush with water features etc for mini beasts. We get quite a lot of dragon flies and damsel flies.

In late summer a beautiful one laid eggs on our little pond. We were thrilled

Mollygo Sun 09-Nov-25 16:37:15

Lots around the pond at the gîte where we stayed this year, but none by the beck here, where we usually see them.

123kitty Sun 09-Nov-25 18:09:35

Hardly any wasps here in South Gloucester (I’m not complaining- just saying)

mabon2 Sun 09-Nov-25 18:16:43

I've seen them at large pond an SSSI area five minutes from my home.

FranP Sun 09-Nov-25 18:18:12

Never had them before, but invaded this year, so now you know where they went Ilovedragoflies#

Now if someone will send my white bottomed bees back please..

HiPpyChick57 Sun 09-Nov-25 20:20:34

Saw some beautiful iridescent Bluey/green coloured ones hovering back and forth on a small lake that we pass on one of our walks. I’m not sure if I took a short video one time. If I can find it I’ll try and put it on here if I can.

AnotherLiz Sun 09-Nov-25 20:42:14

Yes. We live in a village and walk around our hill most days and saw dragonflies in the summer.

Visgir1 Sun 09-Nov-25 20:46:34

Yes, they occasionally fly into the lounge and fly out again. See them all the time in the summer, I'm sure I saw one a couple of weeks ago.

That's a beautiful photograph, dragonfly46! I shall look at that until next summer to keep me going.

FranP, funnily enough, a swarm of bees shot around the side of the house a few months back and hovered (somewhat alarmingly!) outside my window. The sight and sound was amazing! Shall we swap next summer?

I'm so pleased so many of you saw some this year.

Ilovedragonflies Mon 10-Nov-25 10:51:29

Same thing on the wasp front here, 123kitty. I'm allergic to their sting so they weren't missed!

Please do post the video if you can find it, HiPpyChick. From the sounds of it, I won't be the only one to appreciate it.

Sueinkent Mon 10-Nov-25 12:44:34

Funnily enough, I saw a big one ,I think an emperor, yesterday in my local park. We have an allotment and I saw quite a few there in the summer.
