Hello all, been reading what you all do... me? I am elderly, o.k 89, but told I am"good" for my age,, however..

sleepwise,, I am ready for bed at 7 p.m. !YES! struggle to stay up till 8, then read for an hour, that`s all I can manage, so 9 till around 10! I am in such a deep sleep, I am astonished it is not later when I wake, then the rest of the night, mostly wakened every 2 hours or so with bladder saying "go" sometimes I can sleepfor 3 hours,, bliss,, in between some nights good, ie. sleep on and off some nights,,lie awake,, I very rarely get up to make tea or anything, lie then an try to pray etc..

wish I could find a calm radio channel,, I have a Roberts radio which plays mostly a Gregorian Chant cd , that seems to help me a lot. Classic Radio, not so good, all other channels too much talking..
It helps on a bad night to think that some of you are out there and I am not alone.. so thank you, everyone for this sharing.

Another restless night for me .
Lots to do today and I know that I'll feel tired .

Aveline Fri 12-Dec-25 07:12:55

Awake at 4.15 then only dozed occasionally. I have to do blood pressure readings morning and night for a week. I hate doing it so lie awake dreading getting up to do first one. Well it's done now and seemed OK. All recorded.

Cabbie21 Fri 12-Dec-25 05:58:30

Who mentioned tinnitus?
I woke at four and my mind was racing. At 5 I checked my phone to see if my daughter was at the airport. I doubt I shall sleep any more now. Busy day ahead.

Liaise Fri 12-Dec-25 05:53:56

2.30 am today. Haven’t slept since. Read for a while and made tea. During my life I have found a cup of tea the best thing to drink anywhere we have lived in the world.

grandMattie Fri 12-Dec-25 05:24:49

The music dampens down my tinnitus, madeleine, so I switch the radio on as I go to bed, and off when I get up.
I don’t have any fancy gadgets at all or tvs in my bedroom, so ch9, etc., are not available…. But thank you.

HelterSkelter1 Fri 12-Dec-25 05:23:08

Just woken up and surprised to see it's 5.00 am. Not a bad sleep at all. Probably 7 hours in all with a wakeful hour at 1.00 which for me is brillianr. But why? What caused a good night? What causes such bad nights? I wish I knew.

I suppose spread over a week I am getting just enough sleep. I don't sleep in the day...although if I sit at 2 pm with a book my eyes can shut quite easily. I don't think I will make a drink yet. Will do Wordle then read.

mum2three Fri 12-Dec-25 05:12:26

Another early riser here. Because it's cold and I don't want to put the heating on, I lie in bed watching the clock until it gets to a reasonable time.
I discovered a pile of books by Mary Stewart which I'd forgotten I had. Reading them is keeping me occupied until the day begins.

madeleine45 Fri 12-Dec-25 05:06:13

Well Good morning all night time people. I had read about this thread, but not actually come onto it. I usually go on good morning, but before that, try not to use computer or phone in the vague hope that I might go back to sleep. Today even more of a mess so gave up and here I am.

Yesterday went out early and was weary most of the day. Got ready for bed put dressing gown on last night to just check a couple of things out in my diary and put in some reminders. Fatal!! Sat in the chair and fell asleep about 11.30pm and woke very cold at 2.15am, in quite a lot of pain and general grumpiness as I had been silly enough to sit there with my legs down, and so they and my back were protesting mightily. Had a job to move about and struggled into bed, but of course then wasnt sleepy, so have had the odd doze since then but given up, written down much of the things in my head, reminders of jobs for today, and trying not to have anything to eat or drink yet, as once I start eating at this time of night my body decides that it is a fixture, and even if I , by some miracle was asleep would wake me up demanding food!

My two things I tend to use now are the radio on radio 3 on the calming one, with sounds of water etc and music that can help me to relax if not sleep, but also for those of you in UK I have found channel 9 on the tv, which has just bird song from about 4am to 5,30am. I put it on turn away from the screen and do find the bird song both soothing and taking your mind of dark days back to summer sometimes. Wondered if that would be good for you GrandMattie, as it would hopefully interfere with the tinnitus , but not keep you awake with music. My mother used to get tinnitus so I remember all her various ploys to help. sometimes she would put the radio on ( a long time ago) and just have the sort of interference on, no actual music or words but it was a steady sound to help her a bit.
Well giving up on the no drink as am too thirsty and in need of cheering with some coffee. Will call again another time. Hope you can drift off for a while

grandMattie Fri 12-Dec-25 05:04:01

Only another 9 days before the solstice, wyllow!
When I can’t sleep, I recite the alphabet backwards, the subtract 7 from 1000, until I fall asleep. Both require an enormous amount of concentration - for me at least. Helps a bit.
corner, I hope that you are sound asleep now!
This ‘flu epidemic is concerning; please, please, we don’t have lockdown again. I hope lessons regarding the damage that caused have been learned!

Wyllow3 Fri 12-Dec-25 04:17:00

Warm waves for all the too early awakenings.
Bring on the daylight at this time!

Shirleyw Fri 12-Dec-25 03:40:03

Happy…ish it’s just after 3.30 as most of this week been waking at 1.30…2ish…I suppose it dosent help getting up to make tea then but I get bored just laying there.
Still, hope to nod off again for a couple hours….going to daughters later, help to get house and food ready for my granddaughters birthday, looking forward to that.

cornergran Fri 12-Dec-25 02:00:41

Just on 2 and I’ve not been able to settle for sleep. Mind just won’t quieten, I feel unusually edgy with a sense of something bad about to happen. All foolish of course, Friday will be a decent day, volunteering, a drive to take the new computer to the magician and then a wander round local shops. All enjoyable in their own way. I’ll sleep, soon, I hope.

Nell82 Fri 12-Dec-25 01:29:33

I wish I didn't eat all that cheese before bedtime ... tummy and mind are both churning relentlessly. That'll teach me.

Vintagegirl Thu 11-Dec-25 16:06:23

I got a 40 minute slot in the end then awake for hour or so and then maybe 3 hrs up to 10am. Total seems miserable but I surprise myself that am able to function for the day. Certainly less sleep needed as we age. As my mother would say if cant sleep, 'at least you are resting' so I have firm rule to be in bed by midnight.

Aveline Thu 11-Dec-25 13:21:36

I thought I'd had a good enough sleep. Only woke twice then awake for a while each time then slept again until nearly 7. However my Fitbit begged to differ and said that I'd only had a fair night's sleep. Och.

Erica23 Thu 11-Dec-25 07:48:48

Morning we were awake in the night again but only for around an hour, then slept until 7am. I was very tired yesterday with zero get up and go, so hoping for a better day.

RosesandLilac Thu 11-Dec-25 05:47:25

I slept until 4, so not too bad. Just having a second coffee and then I’m going to start a new book. At least I’m reading more than I was!

grandMattie Thu 11-Dec-25 04:56:12

bluebelle, I hope you managed enough sleep in the end.
Goodness, poor you, vintage! Hope you’re compus mentis for your appointment, 🤞
I had a much better night with fewer interruption, so shall cope with today much better.

Vintagegirl Thu 11-Dec-25 04:43:03

not slept yet, been in bed since midnight listened to audio book, radio and done a cojuple of crosswords... now having some herbal brew and toast. Important appointment at 1 pm

HelterSkelter1 Thu 11-Dec-25 04:40:01

Woke at 1.00 and went back to sleep. Now wideawake at 4.00 and reading the BBC headlines and will do Wordle then read my book. It feels much milder so far, but I havent been downstairs to open the back door and see what the weather is like.

Read an interesting article about AI in the classroom. A group of schools are testing out the use of a deepfake maths teacher delivering lessons in school on line which I assume the children can re watch in their own time. Seems a good idea. Top class teaching and the facility to rewatch seems a good idea. Not all teachers deliver a good lesson and this would ensure the teaching was consistent. The class teacher would still be present to help individuals. Interesting trial.

Right The Forsyte Saga here I come.

BlueBelle Thu 11-Dec-25 04:35:56

So 4 .30 and another hours sleep and I’m up again been a mare of a night
Going to try one last hour before I get up for work

Mollygo Thu 11-Dec-25 04:19:49

Just been for a wander round the garden with the dog. It’s cold, windy but not raining.
Hopefully I’ll drop off again soon.

J52 Thu 11-Dec-25 03:28:42

I woke up at 3 with indigestion which seems to be accompanied by feeling very warm.
I’m sitting downstairs and beginning to cool down. It’s my own fault, in the evening I was out to a function where there was a buffet! I really shouldn’t eat late.

BlueBelle Thu 11-Dec-25 03:01:32

And here I am again awoke startled to a phone ringing but of course there is no phone ringing it’s in my head
Going to try again
