Well I had a bad night's sleep off and on all night. Main reason was that I was cold! Feet and hands like blocks of ice. My coverless duvet is great but really isn't warm enough when the temperature plunges. Old duvet and brushed cotton sheets duly fitted this morning. I'm looking forward to a warmer night tonight.

A thread for the 3 am crew
(1001 Posts)Good morning to all the night owls
I m late waking this morning and seem to have missed my
3 am slot however 4.30 am will do ( 4 and a half hours is positively a very long sleep for me) who knows I might even drop of again for a doze before I get up at 6 ready for some work
So who s around ?
Yes Roses I do still get ice on my windows if it goes below 0 I used to call it Jack Frost when I was a kid and love to scratch it it’s also soooo pretty
The funny one now in my house is my bottle of cooking oil is sometimes solid 🤣 in winter
I m fine in the bathroom without heaters because I get out of my cosy bed straight into the hot shower which then keeps me warm enough while I get dressed then downstairs, gas fire on in main room and bingo I m warm and ready for the day
Of course I d not say no to central heating if money was no object but I doubt I could afford to heat this big house even if I did have it
I do rarely catch colds so I don’t think it’s bad for me Hope that’s not famous last words 🤣
I totally agree Bluebelle about not fretting if you can’t sleep. It was very different when I was working and lack of sleep was a real problem at times.
Re freezing bedrooms it wasn’t unusual to wake up to ice on a glass of water next to the bed as well as wonderful frosting on the inside of the windows. The farmhouse we lived in before we moved here didn’t have central heating, just a parkray in the living room and an open fire in the other reception room, nothing in the third one downstairs let alone upstairs. We had heaters in the bedroom and I had one installed in the bathroom- bathing was a real challenge in the winter without any form of heat. I used to keep the bath towels in the living room or they never dried 😵💫
Good morning all. Dark and wet in Durham. Lack of sleep doesn’t bother me at all - what’s frustrating is I’m rarely tired.
Not only did I have no heating as a child, until I was 7 we also had outside toilets and no bathroom!
The funny thing is I m still in the same position as all you used to be in childhood I live in an old, old house with no heating apart from my main room downstairs I m perfectly used to it and can live with it ok and now I ve found a cacoon bed I seem to be sleeping so much better and I m as cosy as a baby I didn’t go to bed till midnight last night nothing to interest me at all on the tv but I was doing a really hard jigsaw and I think I nodded off too 🤣
We all have different sleep patterns as we get older it’s natural to change to shorter sleeps and more wakes
The main thing is don’t worry about it, accept it and you get a lovely surprise when you do have a better night
Growing up in Yorkshire our house only had a coal fire in the living room and it wasn’t worth lighting it before school/work so the house was freezing .We often had coats on the bed for extra warmth . In the bedrooms we had lino with just a small rug . I got dressed under the covers and perfected the art of jumping onto the rug to avoid the cold lino. When my stepdad, who was really tight, had gone to work mum would light the gas oven and open the door so we could sit in front of it to have breakfast. On a plus side I rarely suffered with a cold!
I’m always amused by all your memories of unheated bedrooms and frost on the inside of windows, etc..
I was born and brought upon the tropics and first experienced snow and frost at 25 when I came to the UK.
My problem was the 89-90% humidity together with heat at night. Everything was damp, sweaty and sticky.
I used to sit on the low window sill in the hope of catching a breeze. I’d look out at the velvety star-studded sky and watch the shooting stars.
Good early morning all. First night with new memory foam pillow bought to relieve achey neck. On that score some success, oh that it could send me straight back to sleep as well. A bit too wide awake now reading everyone else's 3 am experiences.
I did post at 3 but it seems to have disappeared.A very vivid dream jolted me awake. It’s slipped away now but I’m wide awake. I’d love some tea but getting up would disturb DH and then he might start snoring. Perhaps I ‘ll read my kindle.
Well done to anyone e putting loads of washing on! Hot milk and moving around a bit happening here then my wave sounds.
Not been awake long so made a tea and put a laundry load on now back to bed with iPad for a while then hopefully will nod off again with music in my ears lol.
As usual I have just woken up after sleeping for about three hours. I will do Wordle and maybe read for a bit. Yesterday we had an unexpected power cut at this time so I was unable to do anything and didn’t like it as it was pitch black and I felt panicky knowing I couldn’t see a thing. We have a lot of power cuts and I hate nighttime ones.
I’m not sure how he does it but Mr C isn’t disturbed by him coughing in his sleep. I’m wide awake, listening to rain on the window and wondering if it’s wise to make a cuppa and start a new book on the iPad. See how it goes in an hour I think. It’s good to know I’m not alone in wakefulness.
Oh yes, those freezing childhood bedrooms. We had metal framed windows, always running with condensation which of course froze into the most wonderful patterns when it was very cold. At the weekend I’d be buried under blankets topped with an eiderdown, my Dad would come and open the curtains and I’d lie there just looking at the patterns until the fire was burning downstairs when I’d run down to get dressed in a (slightly!) warmer space. Thought nothing of it. Goodness I’d hate it now. Too used to central heating.
Stay warm on Tuesday roses, that’s a long while without power. We’ve kept a camping stove and our battery lanterns for emergencies. - although finding them could be a challenge. I really must unearth them and try to remember where I stash them!
I’ve decided. I’ll sneak out and make a cuppa then begin a book, with luck I’ll drift off again by about 4
Thank you for your company.
Made it to bed - the new bedding is great. I’m just not tired, but Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty is just ending, then I’ll watch a bit of Gogglebox.
Three o’clock and all is well. DH has been banished to another bedroom as he was snoring like a grampus. Thought I might have a better sleep but a rather vivid dream woke me. I’ll play some solitaire on the iPad then give it another go. Sounds windy outside.
Awake here as well, but yawning so I may fall asleep soon. I went to bed early so I am not surprised. I have several family worries which are uppermost in my mind.
My childhood bedroom was also unheated. So I appreciate our central heating. We had a Parkray type coal fire in the sitting room which kept most of the downstairs warm, but upstairs was freezing. The once a week bath was very quick in the winter. Chilblains were a constant misery. But we just accepted that was what winter was on the Kent coast. However cold weather now really gets me down.
But my bed is warm and I shall cuddle back down now.
I’ve just finished my final cup of tea and going to head upstairs to bed soon. Quite a productive domestic day for me, including changing my bedding to a fleece set, which I’ve never tried before. It seems very warm - too warm?
👋🏻
Ho hum……. No idea why I’m awake but that’s how ‘tis 🙄
I had a look out of the window, there are lights on in the twin babies’ home opposite, two gorgeous little girls, it must be very hard work especially during the night.
Bluebelle that sounds so cosy, like a cocoon. I have to have my feet either over the edge of the bed or outside the bedclothes, I have absolutely no idea why or when that started but dd is the same! Most strange.
I hate being tucked in, my mother used to do it so tightly that you could barely move, I suppose it was meant to be comforting! It’s strange how peculiar memories suddenly pop up 😁.
My bedroom as a child was unheated so I guess it was not only to make sure that you couldn’t easily get out of bed but also to keep warm. I remember dressing under the bedclothes too.
The road to the village is closed tomorrow, luckily I don’t have to go that way, and on Tuesday we won’t have electricity from 8.30 - 1800, not much fun as obviously no central heating or cooking. Luckily we have the wood burner and a camping stove so it won’t be too bad, I’ve also dug out various camping lanterns as it’ll be dark before it comes back on. God knows why it’s off, no reason given on the information sheet.
We could go out for lunch but DH isn’t keen so 🤷🏼♀️and, to be honest, it’s expensive nowadays.
I went to bed at 11.30, just got up again. Sleep is evading me. Glad some of you are getting a better night's sleep.
Last night I went up to bed very late and I got tempted with late night shopping. Not tonight though.
Aveline yes, knowing it's a lot of us here in GN. You cant just lie there.
Me too Bridie last night. Not a good one. sigh.
Pouring down here Bluebelle, up and down all night, really unsettled, oh for a good straight 8 hours.
This is such a comforting thread. It makes me feel much more 'normal'. I slept through till 4.30/5ish. The cat is always overjoyed when I finally get up. It is a wrench leaving my cosy bed but it's awful just lying there wide awake - as you'll all know.
Sorry I missed our 3 am chat as my iPad had run down but I ve actually not had a bad night at all about 5 hours I think which is pretty unheard of ….this thread is badly wanting to prove me wrong 🤣
I think I was warmer last night I rolled myself in a furry blanket then inside my sleeping bag and under my duvet, that sounds like one of those games where each person adds an item to the list ….’last night I slept in ?????’ 🤣
Have a good day everyone can’t hear any rain or wind at the moment
I was awake from 12 till 3.00 and have just woken up. I must have slept from 10.00 till 12.00 so 5 and a half hours sleep...not too bad. It feels warmer and that has helped me stay asleep. My bed is cosy, but I shall venture forth for a cup of tea.
It looks rainy. My dressing gown is purple thick fleece. A successful MS purchase many years ago and my slippers are wool with a wool sole. French. Bought for me by DD1. They are flat mules. Warm and very quiet. I cant remember the brand name, but they are based on a design used by the pages in one of the King Louis' courts to be especially quiet.
I wish we were able to use more of our UK sheeps wool. I cannot understand why farmers get so little for a bale that it is hardly worth their while collecting and selling it. And wool products are so expensive. Do we have any wool mills left? I shall ponder that thought with my tea.
