From today’s DT
Moulton Medical Centre near Spalding, in Lincolnshire – where temperatures are expected to drop to -3C tomorrow – told patients “pull your sleeves down” and “wear socks” to stay warm.

Its guidance read: “If you’re sat down, keep your feet up on a stool – hot air rises, so floor level is likely to be the coldest part of a room. If you’re at home, try and move your legs around to keep blood circulating to your feet .”

It also said “avoid having bare feet” and wear gloves that are “the right fit

Socks and gloves? Whoulda thought of that?
Harmless maybe, but somebody is presumably being PAID to utter these pearls of wisdom.
How much might we claim for our own suggestions?
I’ll go first - a thermos of soup to hand, and wear an extra woolly or two- real wool if you can.Thermal underwear, leggings or tights under trousers.
If all else fails, a greyhound snuggled into the small of your back or draped across your lap . (Other breeds and domestic animals, eg cats, are available)

Having attended many elderly people suffering from overheating or the cold as a direct result of their clothing choices I am not surprised it seems necessary to give out this advice. Just because you know what to do it does not mean everyone does.

Never mind elderly people.

How many much younger people do you see out and about in really cold weather, no socks, still in shorts and maybe flip flop type shoes?

As for young girls out and about on a night out, bare legs, skimpy skirts/dresses barely covering their bums, low cut tops, maybe freezing when they leave the pub/night club, but hey ho, no problem.

grannysyb Wed 19-Nov-25 11:51:10

Postman was still wearing shorts quite recently!

Some of our posties wear shorts all year round, even when the temperature is below zero or there's snow on the ground! We're a hardy bunch up here north of the border!

I agree but they don’t generally require medical help.

Or if you’re ’stood standing’ !

They do, if they tumble into the gutter, drunk, risking hypothermia on a freezing night in the early hours.

Jaxjacky Wed 19-Nov-25 21:43:37

I believe LtEve was/is a paramedic, so knows her stuff, the majority of hypothermia patients in hospital are over 70.

Just put the heating on! It’s not rocket science and no doubt most of us get the heating allowance.

My postie still wears shorts no matter how cold the weather although he does team them with stout boots and thick socks. He says he gets very hot walking round even in cold weather.

Cabbie21 Thu 20-Nov-25 07:02:53

Those girls scantily dressed on a night out in town on Saturday would be the ones complaining that school was cold on Monday morning!

dalrymple23 Thu 20-Nov-25 13:45:44

Rosie: Mine too! It soared to fever level.

Oh bless ‘em, they do try! No handy greyhounds here but a lovely, thick crochet blanket made by my dd works very well.

I would just say, of all the cosy pets and blankets/wheatbags/hotwaterbottles I've ever had, a greyhound is by far the best thermal storage unit. Self-charging. They can sleep for hours/all night without cooling down at all.

DS4 has a whippet, and while a whippet is pretty hot, its surface area is so much smaller it doesn't have the same thermal benefit. Lighter than a greyhound it's true, and takes up less of the sofa/bed, but a whippet's bony/sharp bits are even pokier.

Just sayin'.

I could offer quite a few tried and tested pieces of advice, such as wear three layers of underskirts and a skirt over leggings when you go out. THis is much warmer than jeans over leggings.

Hot soup.

Light the wood-burner before lunch rather than after, Triggered by the memory of my aunt Isa a contemporary of my grandparents, who having lived through both world wars NEVER lit her fire until after midday dinner.

Grannie would have added polish the sitting-room furniture in the morning, or some floors - that will warm you up!

We had a postie who never let me forget his other job was as a film extra in historic drama. He was in Braveheart. The battle scene. It was on his website.

He told me he wore shorts all winter (in Scotland) because cold made his tough manly legs hairier for the tough-guy look on screen.

In very severe Highland winter weather he delivered the post wearing his Braveheart plaid tossed carelessly over his shoulder/post bag.

You wonder how we got to be this age don't you?

Perhaps not right now, but quite a few of my age-group who were young when mini skirts were the height of fashion develop chronic cistitis or even an inflammation of the ovaries and certainly did need medical assistance.

For the really unfortunate, going out too lightly dressed put paid to their chances of having children.

SillyNanny321 Thu 20-Nov-25 14:21:18

Extra clothes & put heating on. Will worry about paying for it if I’m still alive when the bill comes in 💨❄️

butterandjam Thu 20-Nov-25 14:30:05

On advice from the late Michael Mosly, I turn the shower down to cold at the end.

I am training my aged body to love shivering goosepimples and not be so feeble and wimpy. Also I let my tea go cold before drinking it.

Back in the 60's I asked my GP if my bladder problem was related to miniskirts he replied "No my dear, it is related to your boyfriend, tell him from me he needs treatment too".

Agree,LucyAnna.

Have no idea how I have survived to this age without their valuable advice 😂

Crossstitchfan Thu 20-Nov-25 14:56:58

Is it only me who is irritated by people saying ‘just saying’, or worse still, ‘just sayin’ ?
There are so many things on here that irritate me now and I think you’d be justified in calling me a miserable old bat!
Here are just a few - there are more :-

1. Give your head a wobble (the one I hate most!)
2. Just sayin’
3. End of (2nd most hated)
4. Wow - just wow
5. Suck it up
6. A hill to die on
7. This

What are your pet hates?

labazs Thu 20-Nov-25 15:04:46

sadly my late dog was a real snuggly bug the one we have now due to abuse rarely lets you cuddle him. however i do have an electric throw which is so soft can be machine washed but is a real god send.
lots of hot drinks at least you can hold the cup and warm your hands.

butterandjam Thu 20-Nov-25 15:06:23

Among my pet hates, are people who pick a fight then whine that they're the one being picked on.
