Thank you as always to our treasured benefactor soop.
Hot chocolate and warm muffins await, cushions plumped and fire stoked.

Blossoming the word dentist always sends a ripple of dread along my spine. The sound of the drill makes me lapse into a dither. Do you recall the days (many moons ago) when the dentist operated the drill with his foot? My dentist, some eighty plus years ago, had a stammer and a mild tremor in his hand. I also recall that in the waiting room, there stood a wonderful wooden rocking horse. Boy, oh boy, the squeaking of it, together with the noises from the surgery, were far from comforting.

I must away for today. We have home-made carrot soup for lunch. A gift from our friendly neighbour.

I shall return again tomorrow. My love to every one of our dear Kitcheners.

soop Wed 07-Jan-26 13:02:17

Every good wish to our dear Kitty. Please may she return home to continue her convalescence as soon as the surgery permits.

Redcar How awful it must be for a sufferer with dementia, and doubly so for the those who witness the loss of memory in a loved one. It is a savage disease that robs the suffer of the sense of "self".

A crisp and sunny good morning to all our Kitcheners. We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of middle son and his wife. I can confirm Charleygirl that our son is a tip-top cook. wink. They spent last night in the Lake District.and will be shopping for us en route. We have our car in the Peugeot garage. It is a buggeration to be unable to collect the daily newspaper and stock up with fresh milk and the likes.

mamaa thank you for the link. Sadly, I doubt that we could accommodate as many containers as I would like. Our home has one bedroom and a computer/music/compact dining table and two chairs. I dread to think what the loft houses, as I haven't been able to climb into it for several years. Every so often, Mr Soop claims to be tidying it. There is a session of banging and crashing, shoving and scraping, huffing and puffing but as far as I can tell, nowt emerges (other than himself) for the disposing of. wink

I have ordered cheap crampons from Amazon because I don't want to slip on the hilly pavements here. Once they arrive tomorrow, I am sure the weather will improve, sod's law.

I haven't been out beyond the bins for days as I don't feel safe.

Food is arriving online weekly, so I doubt that I will starve.

I will be hanging clothes out to dry in a couple of months, spring is around the corner.

I hope the middle son is a good cook and will sort out your iPad.
It is so lovely you have joined the fold again, you were so missed.

mamaa Wed 07-Jan-26 11:23:23

Morning all Soopers- ice and snow all gone from here as it rained very heavily late last night and into the early hours I think, and the temp went up to a balmy +2! The refuse collectors also turned up, very early this morning, so bin is now empty!

A bit of respite today before the awful weather which is due to start sometime tomorrow, I think for most of us, arrives.

Soop the storage boxes were bought online from the 'BigRiver' online Emporium- I'll try and post the link below.

Have as good a day as you can lovely people, thinking of all 'mountaineers' and hope todays incline is less steep.x

Morning!
I’m sorry soop & UTBB we live in West Suffolk not Sussex. It’s a beautiful morning after a night of heavy rain which has cleared the snow. There is some horrible weather coming in though. I shall chop up the Christmas tree for the garden bin and fill it up as I fear it will be too wet for outside jobs once today is done. Then a walk for the granddog, who goes home next week.
Enjoy your family time soop and best wishes Kitty.

After a bitterly cold day, it is now tropical 3 degrees and raining! The forecast is for it to freeze later tonight. I’m hoping to get to yoga in the morning, depending on how icy it is. I don’t need to fall over!
I saw my dementia friend this afternoon, she was cosy in bed, not speaking. The room was cool and I was shivering with cold when I went home.
blossoming well done for having a walk today and well done to grannygravy for finding the Health are centre for your xray. I hope it doesn’t show any problems.

soop have a lovely time with your son and his wife tomorrow, will he be able to sort out your iPad for you? I’d be lost without mine now.

I’m going to bed now, the rain hammering on the window in the lounge is telling me it’s time to snuggle down in bed!
Night night everyone, sleep well and stay warm.

Good evening all, it’s very cold and quite icy here but we did manage to get out for a walk this afternoon. Tomorrow MrB has the dentist and I have a prescription to collect, such excitement 😂

Enjoy your family time Soop.

Usedtobeblonde Hooray! The couple for whom I acted as nanny/housekeeper, ran a hairdressing business in Storrington, not Brighton. Their name was LUKE.

Castle25 Stovies are delicious, although it has been many years since I last sampled one.

Ladylleftfieldlover Do you think that the pain in your toe could be gout? If so, it will be giving you "jip". My late father remarked on the severity of the pain when it afflicted his big toe.

TillyTrotter Good afternoon to you. I am slowly but surely catching up with all my friends here in the Kitchen.

Soop, I do have gout! I was diagnosed over ten years ago. I am on medication for the rest of my life. The current pain, I think, is more likely an ingrowing toenail.

soop Tue 06-Jan-26 16:20:13

GrannyGravy13 Thank you for your kind words.
You did remarkably well to visit the NHS primary Health Care Centre and be x-rayed in under 15 mins. Well done that lady!
Your cottage pie sounds like the perfect hearty evening meal.

soop Tue 06-Jan-26 16:11:32

Our middle son and his lovely wife will be arriving tomorrow. In between the carer who helps me to wash and dress and their arrival at lunchtime, I will pop into the computer room to catch up with you lovely lot.

Farewell for today. It is a pleasure to spend time with you. smile

GrannyGravy13 Tue 06-Jan-26 16:10:49

All Christmas decorations are now packed away in back in the loft.

We have had a couple of flurries of snow, nothing has settled, still rather chilly.

Managed to find NHS Primary Health Care Centre on The Island near me, albeit by the circuitous route 😹😹😹 In, out and x-rayed all under 15 minutes.

I have to boil and mash an enormous quantity of potatoes to top an equally enormous cottage pie. Dinner for this evening and many portions for the freezer.

soop it definitely feels comforting and that normal service has returned to have you back in your kitchen 😘

dragonfly Bravo! your dear husband is most certainly speeding up. I envy his ability to manage the stairs, albeit at the beginner's pace. Whizzing around with his frame, brings a smile to my face. I can manage a slow shuffle. The cancer in my spine results in me bending almost double. Anyhow, at least I can manage a short trip to the bathroom.

Usedtobeblonde Tue 06-Jan-26 15:26:38

Hello all.
Miserable and cold here today but actually much warmer than it has been.
We had snow in the night but that ,along with the remaining ice , has disappeared.
It just seems so cold without the sun.
I was looking forward to a day on my own today after always having someone here for over three weeks but the best laid plans etc meant that my GD and her BF who work together were sent home mid morning as the office had burst pipes so no heating or water, I hope it is all restored quickly, I need some space.
Soop and NannyT my D has lived in W Sussex for over 30 years ,she lives in Storrington a nice place but a bit isolated for me.
You really do need transport although I think there is a bus service.
However small as it is they have a Waitrose, a Costa coffee and there is talk of an M&S Simply Food in the future.
My D is hopeful but she can’t think where it can go.
Hope everyone is warm and safe and Kitty has had her op and is on the mend.

soop Tue 06-Jan-26 15:11:56

corner, it is never a wise thing to have a "zizz" before taking to one's bed.

kitty Us lot are rallying and wishing you a successful operation, followed by a swift recovery at home. There is nowhere better than being in your own home surrounded by those you love. flowers

Nannytopsy Where in West Sussex do you live? Long, long ago I was a "live-in nanny/housekeeper" to a lovely couple with two young boys in Durrington. The parents ran a hairdressing salon, I believe not too distant from Brighton.

mamma I am wondering whether or not your storage boxes are those I've seen advertised on t.v. One box was shown to hold over a dozen pillowcases. I would certainly buy a few of the same storage boxes...only I haven't sufficient space in which to house them.

A late whizz in. Wonderful to read your messages soop. Your view sounds fabulous. There’s no snow here so far, just jolly cold.

Our heating is still working after our research, YouTube videos are wonderful things, we’re not cold. Our boiler man says not to worry, it’s safe to use. He’ll get here as soon as he can, he has customers with no heating, totally right he sorts them first.

It sounds as if it’s all systems go for your surgery kitty. Soon be over and you’ll be home again, always the best place to recover.

Hope that toe is less painful tomorrow ladylfl, always something for us mature folk for sure.

Time I tried to sleep. I made the mistake of nodding off in front of the tv so of course was wide awake when I came to bed.

Stay warm everyone. Night night.

Nannytopsy Mon 05-Jan-26 23:28:53

We are in West Suffolk mamaa! Our bins should be emptied tomorrow and are full to the top too. West Suffolk say to carry on as normal.
We are having our WI committee meeting over a pub lunch tomorrow and then we are meeting up with old friends for a pub meal in the evening. Typical - two in one day! We see one of the couples quite often but it’s about 35 years since we saw the others.
We have snow lying on our lane but I expect the main roads will be ok. There was lots of salt down. I have offered to drive at lunchtime. Watch this space!
Sleep well everyone!

mamaa Mon 05-Jan-26 22:53:09

Lovely to see Soop back in her kitchen- you’ve been sorely missed by us lot that’s for sure!
All Christmas decs and tree down and away- I treated myself to new storage boxes and am amazed at how tidy everything is now re Christmas- wish I’d done it years ago!
We had unexpected snow overnight here in East Suffolk and it’s been perishingly cold all day- I did lots of jobs around the house although I really wanted to go out for a walk but too cold and icy underfoot.
No bin collection either- according to the website it’s too hazardous for the bin lorry apparently and for the refuse collectors who might take a tumble when moving the bins in icy conditions. They’ll try again tomorrow 🤞🏻they’re successful- my general rubbish bin is full to the brim as it was emptied 2 days earlier than usual 2 weeks ago due to the revised Christmas schedule!

dragonfly46 Mon 05-Jan-26 22:27:31

Lovely to see you back soop.
Good luck for tomorrow kitty.

We had the physio today today and DH managed two stairs so one day he may make it all the way to the top! He can speed around with his frame!

Wishing you all a pleasant night.

Castle25 Mon 05-Jan-26 21:15:23

An early night tonight after first day back childminding dgd. She never stops unless she’s napping and luckily has a long nap. Stovies are corned beef, potatoes, and onions here. Seems everyone has their own “correct” recipe grandmabatty this is my mums. Hopefully sleep tonight and a restful day tomorrow

kittylester Mon 05-Jan-26 21:15:09

Thank you everyone for your good wishes.

Wishing everyone a warm and peaceful night.

Ladyleftfieldlover Mon 05-Jan-26 21:04:15

Hello kitchen people and especially soop. It’s so good you’re back. Your view sounds wonderful. My elder son who recently bought a house two hours from Inverness, posted some photos on the family WhatsApp group today. They were taken by a neighbour so they could see how beautiful it’s looking with the snow. T&T are in London!

Very annoyingly my left big toe is still quite painful, just as my conjunctivitis is clearing up. I’ll give it until Wednesday before contacting my GP.

Sleep 💤 tight. I hope all is well with the FGT2s.

TillyTrotter Mon 05-Jan-26 20:31:19

Oh I should read more carefully kitty I think your procedure is tomorrow.

TillyTrotter Mon 05-Jan-26 20:30:11

A belated “Happy Birthday” to kitty
- what a shame to have an operation scheduled for your special day.
Keep the celebration for when you are fit again. 🎂
