Shingles Vaccine
(84 Posts)Hello on this dark and very wet day! I'm quite new here fo forgive me if I haven't put this in the correct place.
I am having my first shingles jab in Tuesday. I'm normally fine with all the usual vaccines ,but for some breakfast unexplained reason I am in a bit of a stew about this one.
Have any of you had it,and if so how did you feel afterwards?
Thanks in advance .

I would appreciate it if anyone knows the answer to this. I think I might be immune to the virus that causes it. My children had it and I cared for them and did'nt catch it. Also I was a teacher and was close to children who were contagious and didn't catch it. Is there such a thing as being immune? Would having the jab compromise my 'immunity' if it is there?
Do you think you might be immune to the chicken pox virus (varicella zoster). Did you never have it as a child?
You can’t catch shingles. If you have ever had chicken pox, the virus remains in your body, lodged in your nervous system at the point where nerves meet your spinal cord. For reasons no one understands, the virus can be reactivated without warning, causing shingles.
If you have never had chicken pox, you can catch it from exposure to shingles.
I would speak to your doctor. It is possible to have had chicken pox mildly, with slight symptoms. But if you know for certain that you have never had chickenpox, you may not be a suitable candidate for the vaccine.
Thanks for your response Lahlah65. I will probably speak to a doctor as you suggest.
My appointment is at 3 pm this afternoon. Having read everyone's comments I am less worried,so thanks for . I have paracetamol in the cupboard, and some veggie soup in the fridge ,just in case. I am ready to pamper. I don't have a hot water bottle,my cat cuddles up so she's like a purring warmer
.
I will let you all know how I get on x
I had my second dose last week,I felt a bit off colour for a couple of days.I had no side effects from the first one.Wouldn’t have considered not having it.
I have had the first shingles jab and waiting for my second one. When I was about 45, OH had shingles and passed it to me as chickenpox. So run down with it that I got the flu with it. Doctors refused to visit me and I remember being so cheesed off that after about six days in bed I got up and slowly managed. I would definitely recommend the vaccine. My neighbour downstairs had shingles and sadly died in hospital.
Thanks, Lahlah65. 🙂
Anyone wondering whether or not to have the shingles vaccination should also consider the increased risk of stroke following shingles.

What second jab? I was offered and accepted a shingles vaccination 3 ir 4 years ago. No ill effects that I can recall except for a sore arm but nobody mentioned a second dose.
I different vaccine used to be given by the NHS because it was cheaper. It only required 1 jab. But it wears off very quickly and will probably no longer be effective. The current vaccine (shingrex) needs 2 jabs but is much more long lasting and effective.

We had it a while ago when we were 70, it was just one vaccination then but it is two now. We also had the pneumonia vaccination around the same time. We had no adverse reactions at all.
I had shingles very badly some years before I was eligible for the vaccine. I had it on my face and eyes and I was blue lighted to hospital because of it. There I had a lumbar puncture because it was thought that my brain and eyesight could be affected. I was in hospital for four days, I suffered from effects of shingles for many years, the nerves in my forehead and head very badly damaged, the itching was unbearable and it was sensitive to wind and sunlight. HAVE THE VACCINE, it's not worth thevrisk
I've just had the second Shingles vaccination, 6 months after the first.
I can honestly say I had absolutely no after effects. I, too, was anxious beforehand, but am now so pleased I went ahead
Sorry to say but I had terrible side effects, felt like I had shingles again was in bed for two days.
Perhaps it was because I had shingles really bad.
Hope you get on ok
I have had my first shingles vaccination and had no side effects. I have to have my second part within 6 months, so have put a reminder in my phone to book it. It’s definitely worth having as shingles is quite unpleasant.
Had shingles, had the shingles vaccination absolutely no problem. Had shingles again albeit a few years later. Compared to having shingles, the vaccination is unnoticeable.

I had the first jab a couple of weeks ago with no ill effects, other than a sore arm for 24 hours.
The practitioner was a bit brutal jabbing it in though!
Yes, the needle was a a little on the large side I thought!!
My husband and I just completed the 2 jab Shingrix vaccine a few weeks ago. We decided to get them because too many friends have had shingles recently and we both had chickenpox as children. The first one was fine, and 6 months later the 2nd one was a bit more painful with a sore arm but overall no real problem. I hope this helps.
Anything is better than shingles. I had it and it affected my whole head. The terrible ache on the left side of my face, the tingling in my mouth, the blinding headaches. I found that smacking my face temporarily eased it but all night the pain was so extreme, I used to cry in the morning hoping it would go. I occasionally have twinges in my mouth even after 5 years. Oh yes, please get vaccinated.
I've now had both vaccinations 6 months apart and the only side-effect was a slightly sore arm each time. Much better than having shingles!
Had it several years ago and absolutely no side effects. Had the pneumonia vaccine at the same time, hadn't heard of it but was just offered at the Shingles appointment.
I am generally not a fan of too many vaccines but after seeing how very poorly shingles made my aunt, I did have the vaccination. No side effects at all.
we both had the shingles vaccine at 70, with zero side effects.
I’ve had shingles and was very pleased to have the vaccine. No ill effects of the vaccine but shingles was horrible.
