In the very many houses I have lived in only a few have had an airing cupboard or hot press if you’re Irish or Scottish.

I love mine and don’t know how I managed without.

It’s relatively tidy because we have only lived here a few months!

Show us yours or is it something you fell is unnecessary?

Well, I spent some time yesterday evening sorting my bedding into pillowcases, it’s looking somewhat tidier. I clearly have far too many sets 🫣. I will do the towels today, not that I intend to get rid of any!

Good for you, I bet it feels great now it’s done!

I've just had my hot water tank ripped out of the airing cupboard and replaced with a combi in the same space. I'm already missing the warm airing cupboard. Mine was what's I called an organised mess before. Now the shelving has been reduced by half so going to have to be more organised. I remember a fairly recent post about storing duvet covers inside a pillowcase and started using that tip which is great. So thank you for that Grannygran. Any more storage tips?

I have been shamed, first job tomorrow will be the airing cupboard, will post an after photo

It looks fine!
Mine's only fairly tidy because DH folds everything neatly and re-tidies my attempts, but if I need a certain towel, sometimes a whole pile will come down then they get pushed back.

Overhearing usually refers to things of a very personal or intimate nature 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Perhaps you mean overheating !.

I don’t have an airing cupboard any more. It was taken out when we had the bathroom altered to make it bigger (it was the size of a postage stamp 😂), and the hot water tank was placed in the loft.
I thought I might miss it, but I don’t because I have a tall boy for the bed linen now, and a chest of drawers for the towels.

Sorry didn't post a picture. Don't have a smart phone and my tablet has a bit of attitude about taking pics. But it's not very tidy.
Rosie just scroll past. I look on Chat on Gnsnet as being just that. Chat. Not high level discussion/debate just a bit of chat with a cup of tea or while putting off getting tea/ supper/dinner time together for another few minutes.

No….is nothing private in some people’s lives?

Why all this (over)sharing?

Are you ok, Rosie? I ask because, as I always read your posts, I have noticed that in some of your recent ones, you have come across as being a little crabby! It seems as though you have suddenly become fed up with it all, (or maybe with all of us?)
Please don’t take offence. I mean this in a friendly, not critical, way.

Crabby, moi?

Maybe I just don’t share the attraction of sharing domestic trivia.
But “crabby” when you are a “cross” stitch fan ?
I don’t think so.

I love the sound of a walk in cupboard with shelves rails and a small radiator.

I do have an airing cupboard with shelves and the boiler and pipes which get hot. I keep a lot of the bedding in it. But it is not big enough.
I would also love a boot room with hot pipes to dry off wet coats and ...well ... boots. All not very likely as I will be down sizing at some stage soon.

What is a ‘hot press ?

In Scotland and Ireland an airing cupboard is often known as a hot press.

PS while a cupboard is indeed a “press” in my years being brought up in Scotland I never heard of a “hot press”

RosesandLilac Mon 24-Nov-25 17:26:05

Mine’s a mess so I’m off to try the set in a pillow case…. I could be some time as I have far too much bedding 🙄 and towels

JamesandJon33 Mon 24-Nov-25 17:14:03

In Wales my Gran called it the cwtch.

Oreo Mon 24-Nov-25 16:39:32

….which sounds ever so much more exciting 🤭

I'm not showing you a picture 😁 but yes, it's invaluable.
It has a hanging rail too, for airing clothes that shouldn't be folded.

When we were upgrading the central heating, we decided to have a system boiler and hot water tank because we use the airing cupboard. On reflection, I suppose we could have opted for a combi boiler and to have a radiator put in the cupboard but it's done now.

That’s what we did, the combi-boiler and a small radiator, which works well.
I would always want an airing cupboard but am not showing the pic on here.Nobody wants to see my smalls hanging up.😁

Having had the huge hot water tank removed, I can walk into my airing cupboard. It has a shelf at the back for towels and bedding (but mostly towels), and a small radiator. It will take a clothes airer, which is very useful.

Airing cupboards hardly come into this category.

It’s a bit of fun, we’ve had shoes, the kitchen drawer, the bedroom chair, favourite mug.

I think you are over reacting.

crazyH Mon 24-Nov-25 15:18:26

I’m downstairs atm. When I do go up, I will send you a picture of my airing cupboard …

Why all this (over)sharing?

Is asking about airing cupboards and showing photos any different to asking about clothes and shoes, and GN’ers putting their latest winter coat or boots on site though?

Is that ‘over sharing’?
