At school one day teacher said today's date reads the same upside down.We all wrote and said oh yes.sometime in 1966.what was it?

19 January, 19 August or 19 November 1961 if written as I9.I.6I, I9.8.6I or I9.II.6I.

I suppose if you write 9 September 1966 without any spacers, you get 9966. There's also 6 June 1999, 6699.
