Light hearted - What would you have done?

Recently, I attended a social afternoon for the 'retired' of our local church community. It was an afternoon tea with a floral arrangements demonstration by a local florist. The demonstration went on for quite some time while she created some huge arrangements with all sorts of very long and huge greenery. The exhibits were offered for the raffle and, as we had all bought tickets, it meant that we had the chance of winning one of them. They were beautiful but no way would I have had room in my tiny cottage for such a large display. In panic, as the raffle was about to be drawn, I excused myself and said I had to go home as I had left the dog alone for too long and he would be fretting. My dog is very happy to be left alone. In no way would I have wanted to offend the florist by saying I could not take it home. Have you ever had to bow out of a room or remove yourself with an excuse? (light hearted!)

Sorry if I got it wrong Flippinheck I ll stand in the corner
I was going by the title what would you have done and the gist of the story about winning a prize and making a non existent excuse so I was answering that missed the bit about different things happening to others
What does ‘Bluebelle or an enemy’ mean Maremia ?

Bearing in mind what we all knew about his copious consumption of alcohol

Oh Jesus I have promised
to serve thee to the end.
Be thou for ever near me
My master snd my friend.
I shall not fear the bottle……

It should have said battle

I've googled it and still can't see it. Please tell and put me out of my misery

I’m was much ashamed because it wasn’t really funny😳😳😳

The deceased was well known for enjoying his drink. The hymn was Oh Jesus I have promised.

The misprint was in line 5……..”

🤔🙂

So what is line 5? smile

Crossstitchfan Sat 06-Dec-25 13:07:08

I googled it too! Very funny!

Lathyrus3 Sat 06-Dec-25 12:51:42

Sorry if that was irritating.

I wanted it to hit your eye unexpectedly like it did mine😳🤣🤣🤣🤣

Beechnut Sat 06-Dec-25 11:20:31

You haven't told us what the misprint was. Not everyone knows hymns.

I wasn't familiar either, kircubbin, but I googled it and now I'm howling with laughter.

I had to exit a funeral once due to an unfortunate misprint on the Order of Service sheet.

I might have controlled the giggles if I hadn’t caught the horrified face of the man in the opposite pew………

You’re telling us half a story! What did it say?

Crossstitchfan Sat 06-Dec-25 10:29:31

Flippinheck

But that wasn’t the question Bluebelle.

But very good advice for another time!

I have slipped out of a couple of gatherings where I wasn’t enjoying myself. I doubt anyone noticed.

I would have liked to have been able to go home one Christmas night. I had enjoyed my day and evening, but my son had insisted I was not to drive home and must stay the night, so I had had a couple of drinks. But I just wanted to be in my own home. I couldn’t even make my excuses and leave promptly the next morning as it was decided I should drive them to my daughter’s for lunch. (Their son was working but would arrive much later and take them back.)

I once won a large 🎄hamper in a raffle at the party at my mother’s care home.

It was only a few days before Christmas and TBH the house and freezer were stuffed with food, plus some ordered to be collected, so TBH I felt a bit bad about winning it.
I wished afterwards that I’d just asked them to re-draw it, but thought of that too late.

Instead I phoned the local Sally Army to ask whether they’d like it.
Someone arrived literally within about 20 minutes to collect it!

Oh, that is lovely. smile

Yes, perfect! You did the right thing Witzend. 💐 for you for being so thoughtful.

Similar to friendlygingercat: a baby was brought to the office and being passed around for cuddles. Not keen on small babies, I said a polite "hello" to the proud mother but remained at my desk and kept well away, saying I thought I was incubating a cold and wouldn't want to pass on the infection.
