Bottle banks

Here in Durham, l have an lidless, green plastic box for glass bottles, jars etc
Paper, plastic and metal goes in a full size wheelie bin - both are collected on the same day, by different vehicles every fortnight.
Another full size wheelie bin is my garden refuse - collected fortnightly from April to November at a charge.
The third bin is household rubbish, collected alternate fortnights to the recycling bin.
It helps that the full size bins have different coloured lids.

Our council state no glass in recycling bin, makes no sense to me. Nobottle that i know of either.

I read a councillor's report on this. He said that, as the bins are tipped, the glass breaks. If you have card or paper, it can capture glass fragments and make it a) dangerous at the depot and b) unsuitable for recycling, so the whole lot goes to landfill.

I passed this to my local councillor with no response at all! But I collect my glass and take it to the local recycling centre which has glass bins

I didn't realise that glass wasn't being collected everywhere now. We're very lucky as we still have a weekly recycling collection with three bins for glass, card/paper and plastics/metals. We've also got huge bins for card on our site, and wheelie bins for glass, and plastic bags to back to the online grocery stores.
It's amazing how much the landfill waste is reduced if you separate out the recycling.

How much simpler recycling would be if we all had exactly the same rules. Why councils differ so much?

We have the most wonderful recycling system, everything - paper, card, tins, bottles, plastic etc - goes in one wheelie bin. There are large bottle containers at the local major supermarkets close by, I only see them when I am taking fabric to the clothes bank..

My local authority explained about 10 years ago why there was no separate collection of glass - health and safety. There are bottle bins located throughout the county. For me that means I have to save up a boxful of glass and then drive to nearest bottle bin. I highlighted that many other LAs collect glass separately but no response. Only this summer having heard a lot of glass chinking when the non recycling bins were being emptied I again cobtacted LA highlighting that a lot of people are just using a non recycling bin for glass disposal. With glass being one of the easiest products to recycle why is there still no collection. Response was nothing but figures of how much is collected in the bottle bins. Now, do I still bother to collect and drive or join those who just do not bother. And, when the anticipated "return" scheme eventually arrives it will still be collect at home and then drive to wherever to obtain a small refund.

Funnily enough said this to my husband yesterday. I remember taking a pram full of jam jars etc to the local bottle bank many years ago. I met my church minister and his wife on the way and was worried they’d hear all the bottles clanking and think I was an alcoholic 😂 But it made me realise I can’t remember the last time I saw a bottle bank. Our council do take glass for recycling, so I assume that’s why.

We have fortnightly kerb side collections of 3 bins/bags.
Glass, card and paper, cans and foil and plastic bottles, cartons etc.

Soft plastic and tetra pak to Waitrose, although soft plastic will be kerbside in the future.

I don’t remember seeing bottle banks for a long time.

We have a box for glass, collected every two weeks by the Council.

We also have one bin for glass bottles and jars, cans and metal foil. Also a separate bin for paper and card and one for general household waste. I can’t remember the last time I saw a bottle bank anywhere.

Our council delivered new bins for glass to each house and they were emptied last week for the first time. We’ve been told there will still be some bottle banks but not so many.

We have lots here! But they have just introduced putting glass bottles into the recycling bin at home, so maybe not for much longer.

Glass has always gone in the recycling bin. But most supermarkets ahve a bottle bank and the local tip.

Oh my blue recycling bin is for glass bottles and jars (but not dishes, glasses, flat glass or mirrors). It takes cardboard, paper and magazines (but tissues and kitchen roll go in the green bin for compostable waste), plastics other than crisp packets (though I take all soft plastics to the supermarket collection crate), and cans and foil. It’s no wonder people are confused as every council does it differently!

We don’t have glass collection we still use bottle banks

The council here doesn’t collect glass as it’s not worth their while. The local recycling centres have bottle banks (it no longer needs to sorted into the different colours) or there’s a home collection service set up by an enterprising recycling company. I think they charge about £4 a month.

We have a glass recycling box which is collected bi-weekly.

I suppose all households have a regular collection of recyclable materials so there’s less demand perhaps. The council recycling centre still has a bottle bank (as well as bins or huge containers for everything you could ever want to take there!) but the village hall hasn’t had one for a long time, and the our Tesco car park only has clothes and textile banks now.
