Just heard Stanley Baxter has passed away. I feel so sad, he was a huge talent, somewhat overlooked in recent years. His shows on the BBC were extremely popular, in the same way that Morecambe and Wise were.
Hope the beeb show some of his recorded shows, in honour of his passing.
I believe he was a recluse in recent years, but was never one for all the shmaltz that followed some celebrities around. R.I.P.

As I read it he tried to explain before he married that it might not be a good idea and why.
Whereupon the lady climbed out onto a high ledge and the only way he could persuade her to come inside was to promise to marry her.
She was always mentally fragile. They separated but he continued to support her financially and emotionally. He blamed himself for her demise at her own hand.
I doubt anyone could have made her happy. She had big problems before he married her but she deluded herself that with him all would be perfect.
Sad to think he was coping with such difficulties while entertaining us all so well.

Absolutely loved this brilliant man. Sorry to hear of the sadnesses in his life, but what joy he brought!

from what BBC news said, he was in a home (not a recluse) for the past years.

No he live alone for the last 20 years refusing to go out in case anyone recognised him as this sad old man . He was tormented all his life by his sexuality , He was terrified it would become public knowledge and sadly it was known and nobody bothered. He only married to hiswife as a smokescreen then cried on his honeymoon. His wife killed herself at the second attempt.

Apparently he said he was gay but wished he wasn't. Poor man. I always felt he had a twinkle in his eyes and I would have liked to know him.

He was the reason I book the panto every year!
His widow twankie, with those legs and Parliamo Glasgow back in the 1970s in Edinburgh at the Kings. He brought the house down.
As you say RIP. with a smile 😁

I am taking the littlies on Saturday to Cinderella. I doubt it will be nearly as much fun.

Very talented man, he became a recluse for the last 25 years. He married but he knew he was gay when it was illegal back then..Sad he carried that with him.

I read that he was gay and found that difficult, when people’s perception at the time of the gay community was very negative.

A great comedian RIP 💐

He was quality and like the lesser known, to English people, Rikki Fulton, one of Scotland's best comedians.

Calendargirl Sat 13-Dec-25 18:22:12

On the clips on the BBC News, he was wearing a leotard, and looked to have the shapeliest legs that many women would envy.

Stanley Baxter was one of those comedians who limited his television appearances, so the standard of his material didn't suffer. Between shows, he'd do advertising, theatre and radio work.

I didn't realise he was still alive, - until now that is .
I liked him immensely and thought he was really clever and funny.

So did I, a very talented man.

from what BBC news said, he was in a home (not a recluse) for the past years.

He'd lived at Denville Hall in Northwood, NW London, a retirement home for about 40 professional actors, actresses and members of other theatrical professions for several years.

He was a very clever comedian, a lot better than Benny Hill, and I always loved Stanley sending up old films and doing jokes about his native Glasgow. I can remember one classic sketch where he played all the characters in The Toweing Inferno.

Loved Stanley, saw him in Panto as a child a few times. Parliamo Glasgow and many other things he did was just genius. He also did radio. RIP Stanley, thank you for so many laughs.

He was so clever. His Malcolm Muggeridge was a work of art. When I was learning Italian I always had a quiet giggle, remembering Parliarmo Glasgow.

pably15 Fri 12-Dec-25 20:00:42

I too hope we get to see some of his shows now, the old comediens were the best.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 12-Dec-25 18:56:35

Such talent. He could mimic anyone - the late Queen, Malcolm Muggeridge - he was so very clever. A tortured soul though, like many comics.

ferry23 Fri 12-Dec-25 18:50:54

Such a funny and clever comedian. He flew under the radar to some extent, but definitely equally as funny as any of those old timers. When comedy was clever and didn't have to resort to coarse language and offensiveness to raise a laugh- just the odd innuendo here and there.

Thanks for the laughs Mr. Baxter.

I remember him from the black and white TV programmes in my childhood. I did like him, I hope they show a tribute programme.

I hadn't heard about him for years. He was really funny though from what I recall. I think he was amongst a handful of men, such as Paul O'Grady and Barry Humphries who could do female impersonations and be hilarious with it. That's how I remember him.

Shame he was a recluse in his final years.

RIP
