Most, perhaps all, card issuers enable a personal limit to be set online. But most people won't bother I guess. It's intended to increase spending.

Not quite so re empty bank account. There is probably an agreed overdraft limit on the account - not sure what would happen if someone tried to spend more than that overdraft limit...though I presume a purchase would be declined if, for instance, someone had a £1,000 overdraft limit and were trying to purchase a £5,000 item from it.

Goodness knows I had to live in overdraft for quite some time years back - courtesy of that "single and low-paid" thing I had.

Though the bank might have wondered what I was doing when I made a series of mini-investments putting £100 each into opening multiple building society accounts some years back - until I paid them all back a couple of years or so later from the payouts I got from them just for having an account basically. Defo far from stupid with money - but my parents wouldnt agree to loan me money for a joint investment so.....

This is not wise for people who aren't financially savvy or aren't skilled at self-control.

If you’re that stupid with money it won’t take long for your card to be declined.
To be clear. If your bank account is empty you can’t get money out.

I have a M&S contactless card and occasionally their fraud squad will question me about certain transactions - apparently they check for unusual transactions on an account.

I must commend M&S for their vigilance.

On holiday in the summer I was making a purchase, which was unuaual for me. My card was immediately blocked until I confirmed that it was me, spending a fortune in a boutique in a seaside village!

Pin cards indeed are perfectly possible.

When my bank sent me a new card a little while back I just rang them and said "Are you going to cancel this new card and give me a new pin card instead - or am I changing banks?". They told me I didnt need to change banks and sent me a new old-style card (ie a pin card).

I don't know why banks wanted to give us pin-less cards in the first place. But I'm the customer - so I decide.

It's rather ironical that the banks are trying to persuade everyone to stop using cash while Rachel Reeves' policies are causing people to hoard cash rather than put their money in an account.

This is a terrible idea and try proving it wasn't you if an unscrupulous person gets a hold of it.

The different banks will be allowed to set their own limit but they will also be allowed to scrap the limit if they have a robust anti-fraud mechanism in place.

Errr Redrobin - when I was sent a CONTACTLESS...I therefore asked for a CONTACTLESS ????

When I was sent a contact less debit card by my building society I asked about having a limit but thry said that wouldn't be possible. I therefore asked for a contact less.

I heard that we can set our own limits, which I would do for security.

Can we reduce it to under 100 do you know ?
