Good morning all from the dark Scottish Borders where I've been up, got chilly and come back to bed to drink my tea and read your doings.

Happy Solstice birthday Roses Have a lovely day with your family.

I had a happy day with DD and her girls in Edinburgh. Cinderella at the Lyceum followed by a proper Italian restaurant for an early meal before their train home.
I had time to do some rather random Christmas shopping before the theatre.
Today I'm expecting a couple of friends to visit me and there's a Carol service this evening where one nervous friend has joined the Church choir recently.
The photo was taken from the bus ride into Edinburgh.

I hope everyone has some joy today. The shortest day.

Good morning, Michael and all GNs. Still dark in South Yorkshire and will be for a while yet. I hate these dark mornings. Thank goodness we shall be on an upward trajectory from today.
I went to Aldi early yesterday and had a clear run through the store. Called at Morrisons later for three small items and it took me as long to get through the checkout as it had earlier to do a full shop. Super busy. Made a chicken curry for today - always better if left overnight to let the flavours develop. Today another, vegetable, one to make. DD and her menfolk are here for a meal later. There is a mountain of paperwork and other detritus on the dining table I must move or we will be eating on the floor!
Have the best day you can, folks.

Good morning all from Polmont where it's currently 5° and the ground looks damp. GrandMattie your houses are lovely. I've never managed to get any to stick. Rosesandlilac a happy birthday to you. I hope your family can visit.
Yesterday I picked up the last present for dd. I tidied up and my aunt and uncle visited to exchange gifts. The boys went to Glasgow for the pantomime - their first. Dgs2 was a bit unsure at first but they both got into the swing of things and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's lovely to see the wee family doing things together.
Today I'll go to Aldi. I've started the washing already so that's a job ticked off the list. This afternoon I'm meeting up with a friend to exchange gifts and have a blether. It's been a sociable couple of weeks. Dinner might be a pork chop. Have a good day all

Good morning Mike and all GN's on a dark still cold morning in North Yorkshire. I put a quick post on yesterdays thread when I got back, but again Thankyou to everyone for their good wishes for my travels and am now very weary but safely home.

I had every sort of weather going to Kirby Lonsdale, with very cold start, so much so that I put on my polar longjohns under my trousers and warm jumper and jacket, with my fluorescent yellow overwaistcoat thing. Every kind of weather in one journey, as on the way then had rain, mist, fog, bright sunshine, so had to break out the sunglasses and also divert into a quite discrete layby to remove the long johns as it was too warm by that time. Managed to avoid some suicidal sheep, who chose to sit on the road, of course not showing up in the mist, and the usual mad drivers who seem to appear at this time of year! I managed to find myself a parking place in the market square and rang my son to see where he was. They had not arrived in KL but were not far away, so I took the opportunity to hobble down the street to see what is happening to the shop that burnt down opposite to the church yard entrance. It was still all boarded up but think there are some signs of work going on behind the boards. It has been a year since the fire there. I didnt try to take my new buggy out as the paths are so very narrow there and are paved so would not be very comfortable anyway, but slowly wandered back to the cafe and managed to get a table and some coffee whilst I waited for them to arrive. Just in time as it was the last table free and more people coming in behind me. They arrived ok and we were able to order some food and coffees and catch up with family news and happenings. Joshua , my grandson, was itching to go out and about and so was allowed to go across to a shop by himself to have a look for a particular thing he was after. Then we wandered back to the square and I got out the christmas present and showed them my new buggy, and had a bit of a wander around. Then they had to get off as my son was not sure if he might have to fly out to Palma for work, if they could not organise another driver. They have been very busy and he has been using his crane to lift boats around and has been quite in demand all over, so it was fingers crossed that he would not have to go away, especially with all the hassle at airports at the moment.
I had quite a rough journey home with traffic, mixed weather and roadworks and was very glad to be home. Was so weary I couldnt face doing anything much and went to bed early, but of course I then woke up at 3am thinking it was about 5,30am. I just had a drink of water and tried to sleep again but gave it up as a bad job and got up about 3.45am and read for a while so no doubt will fall asleep this afternoon.

Today I shall be taking it very easy, and trying to get various small jobs done including finding something to hang my garland of bells on the front door, as my one effort at doing some christmas decorating. There will be a lot of carol singing, listening to Private Passions and finishing reading the Yorkshire Post. I also need to go through the details of the radiators as they seem to be coming on too early. Glad that the room was warmed up a bit but not pleased to think it is warming the room at 4am when I am hopefully asleep. At the moment that is as far as I can think. Great to know that this is the shortest day, as even if you cannot see much difference for a while mentally you know you are moving on to longer days hurray.

GrandMattie your cakes look lovely and hope that you get a reasonable amount of people to your service, then the bodies will also give out some heat to help warm the place! RoseandLilac A very happy birthday today and hope you have a lovely day. Oh to be as young as you! You will no doubt get some cards arriving late. Our post round here is so bad at the moment, you dont know when it is going to arrive. A friend of mine had an important doctors letter which only arrived the day after she was supposed to go for an important appointment, and she had to contact the surgery and tell them what had happened, and the post office has the cheek to put the prices for such rubbish service. Well no doubt all of us at GN wish you a very happy day on the correct day too. Karmalady hope you have a peaceful day and get back to a more normal sleeping time

Hoping for a good day for everyone, with the chance of a rest at some time, Try not to get too uptight with whatever seems to be a problem today

Good morning from a dark Durham. Not sure of today’s forecast. I hope it stays dry.
I’m taking DD1 and family to a Christmas play today and have to be at her house for 11, then we’ll get the bus into Town. I hope DGS1 will enjoy it (beauty and the beast), then we’ll get a bite to eat and drinks afterwards.

Happy birthday roses. 🌹I hope your DS is well enough to visit.

Best wishes to all. X

Morning Mick, morning All from a cold, dry corner of Somerset.

Enjoyed our foray to town yesterday, not too busy, a much reduced Christmas jumper amongst the spoils. I decided the one lurking in the back of the wardrobe was beyond redemption. Decorations for the latest, bargain, table top tree for the living room were another bargain at 50p. Mr C has requested I don’t discover a third bargain tree . Can’t think why!

I’ve been awake and up for a couple of hours with an unsettled tum. All seems well now so no need to postpone this mornings coffee visit from a friend. Other than putting a paella together and enjoying putting lights on the new tree nothing on the agenda today.

Very happy birthday wishes roses. 🎈🎂🥂. The last time e I tried to decorate a gingerbread house it fell to pieces. Your little houses look such fun. Hope all goes well this afternoon.

Best wishes to everyone. Hope this Sunday is kind to us all.

Good morning from Torbay where it’s dry but with rain forecast.

Happy birthday, RosesandLilac; it sounds like you will have a lovely family day to enjoy.

Yesterday I finally managed to put up our Christmas cards and we constructed the tree. I can’t remember when I last had a whole day indoors….…it was bliss! After church today, I will decorate the tree, with DH's help (advice!) no doubt! It’s a slim one to fit in my small living room.

Thoughts with those who are struggling especially the FGTs, Susan56 and Marydoll. I hope you’re gradually becoming more mobile, Jaxjacky.

A blessed Sunday to you all. ⭐️🎄✝️🎁⭐️

Good morning on the Winter Solstice. Nice to see I'm not the only one up early. Still pitch black outside, dry but windy. Someone attached a flag to the street light outside, which is proving useful as regards which direction the wind is blowing!

karmalady Sun 21-Dec-25 05:38:11

Roses a very happy birthday to you cupcake

karmalady Sun 21-Dec-25 05:35:40

Good morning from s somerset, it might be dry today and I am hoping for a bit of sunshine

Yesterday was lovely, driving was fine but the sun was blinding. I think I might try my hat with a big visor next time

I went into a deep doze at 7pm last night, zonk and out like a light so I was awake too early today. I cannot be doing that again so tonight will need to go into my sewing room and become involved in a project and from there to bed

I am not going to do much today, just the daily stuff as usual, to give the appearance of tidyness plus knitting and a walk. Simple pleasures while I enjoy the peace and calm in my house

Have a good day

RosesandLilac Sun 21-Dec-25 05:33:10

Bless you grandMattie, thank you so much 🤗x

RosesandLilac Sun 21-Dec-25 05:31:55

Good morning, it’s not raining here in south Glos! A dry day for my birthday. I’ve bought myself a birthday cake and a present (a silver and turquoise pendant), but no birthday cards have arrived (I don’t know why I still expect them!) At 72 I should know better I guess 😊
Honestly, I don’t think I have ever known it so wet, the fields around here are squelching underfoot which is ridiculous when the land is so stony. I bathed tiddler after her morning walk yesterday, she won’t stay clean for long because she loves puddles and mud unlike bigger dog. Bigger dog rarely gets muddy thankfully, she’s too big to heave into the bath 😬
Yesterday was quiet, a few chores then I sat and crocheted and read my book, all very relaxing. DS and family are hopefully coming today if he’s feeling up to the drive from London. It’s unusual for DS to be ill.
There’s roast lamb for dinner 😋, I’ll make a plum and pear crumble for pudding I think.
I will enjoy my birthday cake later, raspberry and pistachio, courtesy of M&S!

Good morning from a dry Bristol.
It’s the winter solstice today, shortest day, bookended by two longest nights…
My neighbour came in the afternoon and spent a happy hour making a sticky mess and decorating her two houses. As you can see, absolutely not professional but great fun. Children are not critical.
Today,I have to eat my main meal at lunchtime as I have to be at church for 530 to warm up the mince pies and mulled wine for the service. There are 9 lessons as usual, but so very many carols; 12 or 13, some sung by and ad hoc choir, the rest by the congregation. Last year, there were 220 (in the register), goodness knows how many this year.
Because we have no heating, the adjacent hall will be used for the refreshments. People may/not come. An experiment caused by need.
Have a very happy birthday, rosesandlilac. You may not be cheated by being born on the shortest day, as each day still has 24 hours in it!
Have a blessed Sunday. Prayers for all, especially for the fgts, md, susan*and whoever I hav3 forgotten (sorry).
Carpe diem 🦩🦤🦩🦩💐🦩🎂
