I'm always surprised how quickly the days start to lengthen.

lixy Tue 23-Dec-25 22:08:48

Sssd sorry for not elaborating sooner, Iโ€™ve been off line for a couple of days. Thanks to keepingquiet for explaining better than I would have done.

FranA I have snowdrops out in the garden, but no daffodils yet. Hope yours stay where they are for everyone to enjoys.

Went to a lovely Solstice party the other night organised by a group of Druids. They certainly know how to celebrate the Solstice! Mead flowing galore. ......

Woo hoo, counting down to Spring now.Don't worry, Easter eggs will be in the shops next week grin

FranA Mon 22-Dec-25 18:24:42

I saw two daffodil flowers on my walk today. I wonder if they will be left for others to enjoy; or will someone pick them.

So pleased to be past the shortest day. I hate the dark. Roll on spring.

Kandinsky Mon 22-Dec-25 17:14:01

Doesnโ€™t actually change much until end of March.
Still dark by 5pm for weeks.

sandelf Mon 22-Dec-25 17:03:10

Yes Happy Solstice to all - not out of the tunnel yet, but nearing the Spring side.

Essexgirl145 Mon 22-Dec-25 15:46:24

Maremia Mon 22-Dec-25 06:52:42

Sweet Solstice everyone. Still haven't managed to glimpse the New Moon. ๐ŸŒ™

I'm in Australia and we've had a run of very hot days and nights. When I realised it was the solstice I felt a little better knowing that the long days and hot weather will move on soon.

Grammaretto Mon 22-Dec-25 01:42:15

It's the turn of the year. Yes it's special.
Extra dark for me as there was a power cut here from 4pm till midnight. I found candles and had already lit my fire. I found my head torch and went out to the church to sing carols.
I managed fine but it makes me appreciate electricity.

My favourite day of the year, too, lixy. I'm not Christian so don't bother with Christmas at all but love to mark the return to the light. The house is decorated with flowers and twinkly lights and I have cooked a special celebratory meal for my partner and me. Now we're sitting companionably finishing off the wine and looking forward to about a month from now when the extra minutes of daylight each day will be really noticeable.

I like the time of year best when the first blossoms come out with their scent, and the earth reawakens and the air is full of promises in the curled light green leaves and we start to get out lighter clothes and go for little walks in the evenings as the light permits it. It's like being in "the Secret Garden book".

Bukkie Sun 21-Dec-25 23:05:10

I love Christmas too. My favourite season is Autumn though. The colours, the freshness in the air, nights drawing in, great television programmes, Harvest. It's just lovely.

Grannybags Sun 21-Dec-25 22:58:36

I wouldnโ€™t mind winter if it didnโ€™t have Christmas in it

Bukkie Sun 21-Dec-25 22:44:34

Grandma70s I could have written your post. I HATE light nights and dread the thought of summer. Whilst people sympathise with people who don't like winter nobody gives two hoots about people like us.

Grandma70s Sun 21-Dec-25 22:33:27

I may be alone in enjoying the short winter days and long dark nights. I donโ€™t much like summer, and dread its arrival in the same way many people seem to dread the approach of winter.

My favourite day of the year. Hope everyone enjoys a moments peace to contemplate the turning of the world.

Can you elaborate please? I like the sound if this but have never really thought of it before.

The world turns everyday- infact it is in constant motion throughout what we term a day.
The solstice is the point at which the northern hemisphere begins its turning back towards the sun. It's hard to decribe without a diagram.
I find the solstice at either end of the year to be a very special time when we can see a slow but steady turn away from, and into, the light depending on whether it is summer or winter.
Of the two, midsummer is certainly my favourite.

Thank you for the Happy Solstice wishes. It's so very dark up here in Scotland, but looking forward to lighter days.

Happy Solstice!

This is the first day I look forward to at this time of year. The next is 27th December and after that the 1st January!
