Posted earlier about poo with blood and clots.poo sample also found blood but that was a week ago and haven't seen blood since.I have anemia though.Appointment 9th january.should I cancel? Don't like hospital!

Anaemia is a symptom, *Cariad". not a disease in itself, and one of the things of which it can be a symptom is internal bleeding. There are many causes of this, and a colonoscopy gets an "inside view" which can rule out most of them, including cancer in the digestive/excretive system.

Advising someone to try to cure a symptom by "a natural cure" while refusing a way of checking for serious disease is just telling them to bury their head in the sand and sing "La, la, la-la-la" with their fingers in their ears - not helpful.

Regarding my first colonoscopy, it was about 20 years ago, so perhaps my not being offered sedation was because it wasn't part of the process back then.

During my second procedure a colour photo was taken of my innards. It is now one of my most treasured possessions. 😉

Thanks everyone.promise I will not cancel.Seeing your insides on a screen?😨

So glad you are going ahead. Maybe take headphones if you have them and listen to your favourite music. Good luck.

I’m glad you’ve decided not to cancel Whingey. I know the thought of it is probably unpleasant, but it will be over quickly and sedation will relax you. Then, you’ll have the results quite quickly and suitable treatment should begin soon after. 💐

Great news * Whingey*
Watching the screen is the best bit 😃

Whingey glad you aren't cancelling . Never had one but friends who have . Having one saved my uncles life as they found the cancer very early on. He lived for 15 years after treatment he died from kidney failure. He didn't get bowl cancer again .

I hope everyone has there mammogram once you reach 50 every 3 years then. And the bowel screening at 60 then every 2 years. At least the mammogram machine is smaller than my first one .And the bowel screening isn't the cardboard and needing 3 bowel movements. So easy to do since they had the little bottle.

What made me laugh was the instructions about catching your poo with my first kit . It said into a plastic bowl 😱😱😱😱 or wad of toilet paper.
I use toilet paper .

One of my friends said she made sure she had plenty of toilet roll and Andrex wipes . As the stuff you have to use to clean your colon out these are her words 'made my arse feel like a hot poker had been pushed up there . ' She used Sudocreme to ease the soreness. But said it put her mind at rest everything was fine .

Hope all goes well when you have it done .

Good luck Whingey! You don't have to look at your insides on the screen but it's quite fascinating 🙃

Bowel cancer is lethal if not dealt with early enough. My cousin died from it. Get the colonoscopy.

Tell whoever you see at the appointment about your fears. They will help.

Blossoming Tue 23-Dec-25 09:54:26

Don’t cancel. I became very anaemic due to internal bleeding and was subsequently diagnosed with bowel cancer. Prompt treatment and keyhole surgery saved my life. It’s a scary diagnosis but it isn’t necessarily the worst.

ViceVersa Tue 23-Dec-25 09:45:34

As others have said, the prep is the worst part - please tell the staff about your anxiety at having the procedure and they will do everything they can to reassure you. No-one likes having this type of procedure, but they are a means to an end and hopefully everything will be fine.

annodomini Tue 23-Dec-25 09:36:00

I have lost two friends/relations who had undiagnosed bowel cancer. Please don't risk not having the colonoscopy.

Primrose53 Tue 23-Dec-25 09:18:54

I’ve had many colonoscopies as I am at med-high risk of developing BC as my late Mum had it twice, different types.
They are absolutely nothing to be feared and I would rather have one of those than a tooth extracted.

You will be fine and the staff do them day in, day out and make it very comfortable for you.

Wyllow3 Tue 23-Dec-25 09:17:19

Actually seeing my insides on the screen was my choice, drugged up on fentanyl as I was it was interesting. And if there is something to discuss afterwards (cysts, for example) you will have seen it for yourself.

Witzend Tue 23-Dec-25 09:06:50

Both my father and my MiL died of bowel cancer that wasn’t diagnosed in time. This was in the 80s - tests and diagnosis are so much better now.

Everything crossed for you, Whingey, 🤞👍

pably15 Tue 23-Dec-25 09:03:16

please don't even think of canceling ,It's very important to get this checked the sooner the better.

Georgesgran Tue 23-Dec-25 09:01:22

Well done Whingey. Thats the right decision. X

I was really scared and intimidated by the idea too, Whingey.
I too was offered sedation and they gave me a drug (fentanyl)

where I felt light and relaxed and they were really kind, and held a nurses hand, and it was fine because of the sedation. Maybe your fears relate to "what they might find". Better to know, as it could be benign.

I've had the procedure twice. First time round I was petrified and wasn't offered sedation. I was fine, just a bit uncomfortable, but certainly not painful. On the second occasion I was offered sedation and accepted it. Again, no problems. The staff were friendly and efficient. In fact we had an interesting chat about my insides whilst watching the camera images on the screen.

Taking the nuclear strength laxative was the worst bit for me.
Please don't cancel your appointment. It might save your life.

Well that has certainly brought up the issue of "They are supposed to offer sedation. If they don't - then be ready to tell (yep I did use the word "tell" rather than the word "ask") them they will get the sedation for you. Do not just accept them going ahead regardless without sedation".

Flippinheck Tue 23-Dec-25 08:49:18

My neighbour ignored bleeding from the bowel and anaemia. She was then diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer. The chemo and operations she subsequently endured were horrendous. She is clinging on but the chances are that this will be her last Christmas. If she had gone to her GP when she first noticed her symptoms she might still be living an active life and enjoying her grandchildren. Please do not cancel your appointment.

petra Tue 23-Dec-25 08:43:46

This procedure will take one day out of your life, whereas if you choose to ignore the symptoms and help that is being offered to you, you will take up how many days on an overstretched NHS when it didn’t have to be that way.
