“5-a-day”? Today (again) I’ve missed them ALL by a country mile!

Oh heck it’s not very healthy is it?

(My meals) today I’ve had:

A bowl of Jordan’s cereal, (Do a few dried raspberries count?)

2 thick slices of Hovis, buttered and topped with thick spread of Philly cheese.

A lamb hot pot ready meal. Didn’t even bother to cook some broccoli to go with it. Norty me.
A small custard tart.
A Turkish Delight.

Tomorrow’s meals for me don’t fare any better unless you count a dollop of coleslaw.

I’d best pile my plate with Brussels sprouts and carrots then on Christmas Day!

AuntieE

Are we talking fruit or vegetables here?

Fruit is so expensive here that I could not possibly afford 5 pieces of fruit a day!

Vegetables: potatoes, red cabbage prune and apple stuffing every day during Christmas.

just curious, where are you that fruit is so expensive you can't afford it?

In any case the "five pieces" receommendation covers both fruit and veg.

Christmas pud can include fruit and veg ( if you include grated carrot, apple, dates, sultanas, apricots etc).

Christmas lunch for 6 (one of them vegetarian); veg included CPud as above, parsnips, potatoes, sprouts, a rice and beetroot risotto. My contribution was cranberry sauce (fresh berries plus the juice and zest of an orange). Then a stuffing made with leeks, onions, vacuum pack apricots, ditto chestnuts, a lot of fresh herbs, crumbs, juice and zest of a lemon and an egg.

It was an ad campaign. Not based on anything.
Considering all the chemicals, coatings etc., I wouldn't beat yourselves up too much if you don't succeed in the 5 per day directive.
Info moves on and everything changes
Not that all those lovely sweet foods mentioned above are good for us either 🤣🍇🍅🍉🍌🥑🥦🧅🥜🍿🍰🎂🍬🍭

In the spirit of helpfulness, I want to remind you all that wine is made from grapes.

Always eat well over 30 plants a week the rest of the year but don’t count on Christmas week, anything goes! Needed to put weight back on after being ill, so have been force fed mince pies, quality street, biscuits and chocolates all December!
New a year is looming and healthy eating will be resumed but we all need a week off.

I salve my conscience by always having a small bowl of olives in the fridge which I dip into as the day goes on. I kid myself it cancels out the unhealthy stuff…

Breakfast was toast and left over pâté. No lunch, then dinner of slices of pork, mashed up carrots and sprouts, apple sauce, cranberry sauce, boiled potatoes, stuffing and gravy.

No pudding but grabbed a couple of small chocolate logs in the evening.

I was given a large box of Ferrero Roche yesterday. My absolute favourite. Unfortunately I ate half when I got home, the other half I ate for breakfast. Why, I keep reminding myself ive put on 7lb in last few weeks having lost 2.5st ..stupid woman.

I had apple and cheese for dinner. I bought enough veg and fruit last week to sink a battleship..all untouched apart from 3 apples. No excuse, ill end up on diabetic medication as my GP suggested...my reason for loosing the weight in the first place....

Someone save me, please

Do glacé cherries count?

Of course! And raisins, currants and sultanas.

👏👏👏
Goody good, I'm exceeding the five a day now 😀

Three from the trifle (fruit and glacé cherries, dried fruit from the Christmas pudding, not to mention grapes (wine and brandy sauce!).
And, of course, the obligatory sprouts.

My husband doesn't eat many vegetables so I enjoy Christmas when I can cook them for my son, daughter and grandchildren. We've actually been quite good with peas, carrots, red cabbage, cauliflower and sprouts recently - my husband always adds marmelade, wine and beer (oranges, grapes and hops) and we've all also had mince pies, chutney and cranberry sauce!

GrannyIvy Thu 25-Dec-25 06:29:04

Oh dear yesterday had a bag of cheddars on the run for breakfast then 4 homemade sausage rolls for lunch followed by a handful of Roses chocolates. Baked potato southern fried chicken and peas plus a tomato for dinner and half a bottle of wine. 🙈

We all know the theories for healthy eating ,but somehow they get shelved at this time of the year.
I've been drinking Baileys and eating mince pies and chocolate.
I've got a bug and I don't want to do anything except watch TV and eat what I fancy .
Get well soon Cabbie and merlotgran .

I reckon 3 glasses of wine and a load of chocolate orange segments - oh and a Quality Street strawberry cream which nobody else is going to eat - easily covers my 5.

You're all over thinking it with talk of cauliflower and apples and kale - keep it simple, that's what I say. wink

Sarnia Wed 24-Dec-25 08:03:32

Oh, good. Someone else like me. grin
You can make amends by scoffing a Terry's chocolate orange. Must be one of your 5 a day.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 24-Dec-25 07:54:42

All a bit hit and Miss isn’t it? I must try to do better. Perhaps eating a banana and an apple a day will do me good and easily boost my 5 a day.

You know the saying:
“An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Provided it is well aimed.”

Allira Tue 23-Dec-25 22:42:30

Well, they say a little of what you fancy does you good. 😂

That was always my Mum's excuse 😁

Hope you feel better soon, merlotgran

Allira Tue 23-Dec-25 22:38:53

A lamb hot pot ready meal
Were there onions, carrots and swede in the hotpot?
There's three, four with the raspberries!

You're nearly there 😀

Toast and apricot jam (apricots 🙂)
Cheese and biscuits
A rhubarb yogurt (rhubarb isn't really food)
Fish, new potatoes and green beans.

My appetite has been a bit odd lately

Oh dear.

butterandjam Tue 23-Dec-25 21:42:52

porridge, toast
salmon, herby couscous, steamed kale. Banana
Spicy cauliflower soup ( a whole cauli, 2 potatoes, an onion, stock, milk, curry powder zatar and peanut butter. ) Bread.
a mince pie
a satsuma.

tanith Tue 23-Dec-25 21:07:21

Breakfaat was Bran Flakes fresh raspberries then boiled eggs for lunch, home made shephards pie with brocilli, a tiny mince pie. Could do better 😜

merlotgran Tue 23-Dec-25 20:53:09

I’ve been under the weather for a few days with a flu type bug despite having had the jab. Couldn’t eat for two days and then only wanted to nibble toast. Today my appetite has returned so I’ve been carbing up - telling myself it’s for energy.
Porridge for breakfast, bacon sandwich for lunch and macaroni cheese for dinner with a pathetic little salad.

Well, they say a little of what you fancy does you good. 😂

kittylester Tue 23-Dec-25 20:30:58

Breakfast - hot chocolate (cocoa beans)
Lunch - pate topped with cranberries.

Tartiflette - it had some onions in it!! Plus lots of bacon, cream and cheese.

Sssd Tue 23-Dec-25 20:09:20

I had 2 chocolate éclairs for dinner.

I might have an apple now.

SueDonim Tue 23-Dec-25 20:08:57

Quality Street seem to have become the default pudding of choice here. tchconfused
