A few years ago we were on the Caribbean island of Tortola. The rule there was
“Here in the land of sea and sun
We don’t flush for number one”.
Water is very precious.

Witzend

To avoid any issues, dh and I thanked our hosts very much for the offer of accommodation - and booked ourselves in to a local Premier Inn instead. Blissful peace to escape to - and our own en-suite bathroom. A major consideration when you’re both getting on a bit and up 2/3 times a night to wee.

Indeed. Premier Inn exists for a reason!

Always flush. Leave them asleep.

We leave people to do as they wish.

I would ask if they wanted me to wake them and after how long when they told me they were going for a nap.

Regarding flushing - we tend to flush less frequently, (unless it's a drop of the hard stuff!!). This is deliberate in order to save water. A neighbour once told me "oh, but it's free", which is just not true. Even if you are not on a meter there is a cost somewhere along the line processing the stuff.

I am diabetic and usually have to the bathroom 3 or 4 times a night (just wee). Flushing can disturb everyone in the house. My family all know this and I don’t flush though I do make a point of getting up first and flushing. I wouldn’t stay anywhere with people I am not comfortable with.

Oh the joys of being a guest! It’s the infinite variety of ways of turning shower water on and off and regulating the temperature that always gets me in a knot.

Have they woken up yet?

I would pop my head round the door. First of all I make sure they are still lying in a natural position and still breathing normally. Then I would call their name quietly (this doesn't work if they are very deaf) and if they don't respond let them sleep on.

With regards to the the loo. I quote "If it is yellow let it mellow, if it is brown flush it down."

In years gone by as a young parent, you soon learnt the polite rules of staying in anyone elses house. So if there are very young children do you flush in the middle of the night- possibly waking children or pets , gnash gnash , or do you not flush - seen as badly brought up and impolite.? So you soon learnt the rules of your friends homes and behaved accordingly. Well these days somewhat older , if someone isnt feeling too good , or says they are going for a nap for half an hour, if they are still fast asleep after an hour or 2 hours what do you do? Go and wake them with a cup of coffee so that they will still be able to sleep tonight, or leave them until they wake up naturally? You are never going to win, either they feel miffed that the best sleep they have had for ages is interrupted, or have missed their favourite programme or walk or whatever and the whole day is now upset as to meal times etc. So far I have crept in to check they are just sleeping and crept out again! What do you like people to do? I shall now make it a new years resolution to find out for future knowledge!
