Happy New Year to you all. May you be healthy, wealthy and wise.

Yesterday I met my friend for a coffee. We couldn’t get into our usual quaint tea rooms as it was so busy, so went off to another cafe which was ‘ok’.

Dd had booked for us and DGD to go to the Panto . Taxi picked us up at 4 for the 5 o’clock show. Oh dear! It started at 3. The staff and head of house couldn’t have been more sympathetic and helpful. They will phone us tomorrow with, hopefully, room for us at another performance over the weekend.
DGD was so good and never made a fuss. Just said to her distraught mum ‘don’t worry, these things happen’. 10 years old and so wise! My little

Taxi driver came back for us and we waited outside looking at the amazing sunset over the sea / estuary . Every cloud…..

Dh was tired so we went to bed at 10. We’re usually at our seaside cottage with friends celebrating the new year. Peaceful , watching the sea with usually a bright bright moon.

Here , it was like a war zone. I’ve never heard so many fireworks in all directions, booming and crashing. It went on for an hour . The dog was fine , safe in her little room and didn’t make a sound.

Today I’ll start taking down the decs and have a good dust and clean up. DS will come and put them back in the loft.

I hope all poorlies will start to feel better and look forward to improved health in the coming year.🙏💐.

Take care all - it’s icy out there 🥶

Wishing everyone a - Happy New Year- from a cold and wet Shropshire.

It is our 54th wedding anniversary today and it was a much better day then than it is today, we are so grateful to still have each.

Thinking of those who are sad, lonely or worried and hoping the New Year brings hope and comfort and some joy to all.

Liberty Thu 01-Jan-26 08:39:19

Good morning from a frosty and bright Suffolk where I expect it will be very cold today.

We no longer stay up on NYE beyond our usual bedtime and for years now,in our little hamlet of 7 houses there are no young children any more so no fireworks to be heard. Years ago the vicar at the time used to ring the church bells at midnight assisted by DH but that tradition ceased when he moved to another parish.

Messages to and from friends and family,a dog walk later and then a quiet, peaceful day at home…..lovely.

I hope 2026 is a year of good health and contentment for all, especially for those with ongoing struggles.

lixy Thu 01-Jan-26 08:34:25

Wishing everyone a good 2026, and the resilience to deal with both its ups and downs.

Oldbutstilluseful Thu 01-Jan-26 08:32:26

Wishing all the lovely posters, and others, who regularly share their daily ups and downs with us, a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year , particularly hoping and praying that better health is on it’s way for the mountaineers 💝

Good morning. A bit late today after a late night( early morning).
A dinner with friends and we watched the fireworks from London on TV. Spectacular , but oh my, all that money up in smoke.
I had a wonderful surprise from DH. He has booked for us to go to an Andre Rieu concert in Maastricht at the winter palace next December, something I have always wanted to do.
So a happy start to 2026 for us .
Will come back to read all the new but wish you all a very Happy New Year.

Ashcombe Thu 01-Jan-26 08:28:59

Good morning from a chilly but dry Torbay with my app suggesting snow is possible within the next few days - a rare sight here!

Thank you, Mick for reliably helping us to start the day throughout the year - it is much appreciated.

You have certainly earned the right to please yourself in retirement, RosesandLilac, after your noble career.

A poignant day for you, Redcar. 💐

DH has a cold which is affecting his asthma and he has left his inhaler in France. 🙄 Fortunately, my local (excellent) pharmacist provided him with a replacement for a small charge, having seen his prescription which he had remembered to bring.

An indoor day seems likely as we’ve plenty of supplies, having made it to Lidl yesterday.

Wishing you you peace and joy in 2026. ⭐️🍾🥂⭐️

Good morning from a sunny WKent and a Happy New Year to all
Stayed up with DH and received updates of the family evenings going on from Kent to Scotland. Far fewer fireworks this year
Quiet day today I think

Marydoll Thu 01-Jan-26 08:23:32

GrannyGravy, I was downstairs at midnight, the other night, because I forgot to take my antibiotic!
Last week I forgot it was Saturday and forgot to take my injection!

I hope you start to feel better.💐

baubles Thu 01-Jan-26 08:22:10

Redcar thanks

Morning Mick, morning All from a chilly, frosty corner of Somerset.

We had been invited to meet family at Longleat yesterday which meant an early start in minus temperatures. It was a beautiful, atmospheric drive as the sun shone through mist onto frost. Longleat was shrouded in mist when we arrived, it soon cleared leaving a sunny if jolly cold day. Thoroughly enjoyed the day but boy did it get busy in the afternoon. We stayed to re-visit part of the Festival of Light leaving them to the longer part which was several steps too far for us after an active day. A very happy end to 2025.

We were awake to welcome the new year, I finally slept around 2 or maybe a little later. Today will be a quiet one, traditionally it’s a sort of stock take day for us, thinking and planning. I’ll speak to one son who has big changes on the horizon, and catch up with two poorly friends. A simple meal today, and I suspect an early night.

Thank you for opening 2026 mornings for us mick, my best wishes to you and all morning friends.

Savedbygrace Thu 01-Jan-26 08:19:40

Happy new year everyone 💕

Marydoll Thu 01-Jan-26 08:18:10

Good morning all from Glasgow, where it is 3°C .

Unusually for us, we were in bed before the Bells. Gone are the days, when we all took turns to host the cul de sac party. I don't seem to be picking up at all and have no inclination at all to socialise. My voice has been damaged by the coughing and no-one can hear what I am saying. probably a blessing.😉.

Yesterday was quiet, apart from a surgery visit and searching the estate for a missing parcel.
I received notification that it had been delivered, however it was nowhere to be found.
We checked the camera and there had been no delivery.
On phoning Yodel, I was informed that as there was no house number on it, the driver had possibly delivered it to No.2, five cul sacs away.😡
He kept calling me Miss Mary and suggested I go looking for it. I was fuming, as there were a number of items in it, which I had bought for upcoming birthdays.

DH offered to come with me and off we trotted, torch hand, struggling through the wind and rain.
The problem was, that it was so dark, we couldn't read house numbers and the numbers here are in a strange order. I'm surprised someone didn't call the police, we looked extremely suspicious.😂
We did eventually track it down. The house had a Ring doorbell and cameras, so I thought I had better alert the householder that I was not a thief.
She came to the door, wearing reindeer antlers, decorated with Merry Christmas 🤣 and had no idea the parcel was there.

The address on the parcel was as clearly written, the driver just couldn't be bothered delivering it.😡

Today, DH will go to Mass. I had to remind the P.P. that it was at 11am, not the usual 10am weekday time. He argued blind that it was 10am and I had to point him in the direction of the Pastoral Council minutes. He is so forgetful, it makes life quite difficult.

A quiet day for us, I am still coughing away, it is so debilitating and restricting my life!
I have some sewing alterations to do, so will crack on with that.
Normally, we would have traditional steak pie, but I took advantage of the half price sirloin in Tesco and we are having roast beef with all the trimmings. The beef is already cooked, tested and it is delicious!

Scalpa, I hope you are starting to feel better. 💕

Wishing my Granspals and those who lurk I dislike that term, sounds derogatory all the best and praying for a healthier New Year for the mountaineers, (myself included.) ♥️

Good morning and a Happy New Year from a cold and frosty south coast.
DD and DSiL coming for lunch today. We won’t eat until 2pm and I did most of the prep yesterday so no need to be dashing about this morning.
Hope everyone has a good day.

Grammaretto Thu 01-Jan-26 08:15:18

Good morning all from the Scottish Borders. Still dark.

Yesterday was mainly spent trying to clear my massive bookcase which I have sold and it's soon to be collected. 3 of us made progress with another work party tomorrow.

I was invited to a friend's last night so joined her cosy party. We are all oldies now but have plenty to talk about and lots in common having lived in this town for over 40years.

Most stayed till the Bells and sang Auld Lang Syne.

I hope for a quiet day today. I've nothing planned.

Enjoy your celebrations everyone. Thank you for your friendly, supportive and witty posts to start each day and a Happy New Year to all.

EkwaNimitee Thu 01-Jan-26 08:13:10

Good morning Mick, thank you for another year of this great thread. And Happy New Year to you All!

It was a grey, gloomy day all yesterday but I just ignored it! I went down town early and found my usual car park practically empty. The card machine wasn't working so I had to use cash. Always wise to have both cash and card available. I had to stock up on food in M&S having returned from holiday the previous evening. Then I had to collect a prescription and finally walked back through M&S to eye up the sales rails. I may be back but this is my 'no spend' January...only what I actually need.

I returned home to lots of laundry and tidying away of holiday items, accounts to sort out and then reading my latest book. I didn't stay up to midnight, haven't done for decades, though I briefly woke to the sound of some fireworks somewhere.

Today, I will marzipan my Christmas cake and start eating it...no icing for me, it's too sweet but I love marzipan. Christmas cake and puddings weren't had in Spain so I've been looking forward to these.
There is more laundry to pursue and I want to start working through the kitchen cupboards to see what I've forgotten about in them...there's bound to be something.

I shall have my special New Year's Day lunch, venison steak, possibly some Christmas pudding and a bottle of champagne. Fear not, it's only a mini! After that lot, finishing my book if I don't fall asleep over it. And really, I should fit a walk in somewhere.
I was gratified to step on the scales this morning and find only 2 pounds had gone on in spite of all the guzzling of unlimited free wine and 3 largish meals a day. I did lots of walking so that worked.

Have the best possible year everyone, best wishes from Carlisle.

Grandmabatty Thu 01-Jan-26 08:12:51

Good morning all from Polmont where it's currently 3° and damp. A very happy new year to you all. Madeleine we always opened the front door to let the new year in too. First footers had to be a dark haired man in first. I haven't heard of some of your other traditions though.
Yesterday was spent in an orgy of cleaning, washing and ironing. I can't go into the new year with any washing in the basket. Dd is now the same. We caught it from mum who was very superstitious about these things. I was asleep before the bells then woke briefly just after midnight. Being a bit deaf, I didn't hear any fireworks, if there were any.
Today will be quiet. The family are staying home. Dgs1 wanted to see new year in, so I'm not sure how that went. I have a steak pie for later which will do me tomorrow too. Have a good day all.

Good morning and a Happy New Year from Inverness where it’s cold with snow showers forecast for today.
Redcar ❤️
We were out and about yesterday, visited a new to us hotel for coffee and then looked around the new refurbished Inverness Castle. We didn’t stay up and then slept well, I don’t think there were any fireworks nearby. A quiet day today, most places are closed so if we do go out it’ll be just for a walk somewhere
Thinking of everyone with worries and struggles, hope today is gentle and take all 💐

madeleine45 Thu 01-Jan-26 08:03:04

Good morning Mick and all GN's, and I wish everyone health and happiness this year. I stayed up and as is my habit at new year, I opened the door to welcome in the new year and raised my glass and remembered friends and relations from all over the world from so many years and wished all those alive health and happiness, and thought of so many no longer with me but still in my mind.

I only have one door in this flat so couldnt go back to the old ritual of going out of the back door and coming in the front with bread a coin and a piece of coal but I did collect stuff together and took it out and brought it in. I had a new king charles 50p for my coin to keep, quite shiny , couldnt find the very old shilling that I used to use.

Quite quiet round here, No one else in the flats up or around as far as I could see. Remembered New Year in so many different places, trying to eat a grape for each chime of the bell to bring a good month for each one I managed, freezing on a high balcony in Stockholm throwing sparklers into the snow and the deep water, first footing in england etc.

Well worked quite hard yesterday in my usual new years eve way, where I try my best to have myself and my clothes all clean, any ordinary bills paid - obviously not things like a mortgage but have always tried to be debt free in the normal way of things to start the new year. Even to the extent of years ago when I paid the milkman each week, I would put the money beside the door to signify debts paid so that I could begin each year, if not well of at least not owing people.

So today a bit more sorting out, had quite a good day of it yesterday, still loads to do but definitely I could see a difference and hurrah hurrah at last the dustbin men came and took all the rubbish , thank goodness.

So a quietish sort of day and make an early meal as tonight I shall be going up to Reeth in Swaledale, where they have fireworks at 7pm. Have done this for many years, and will no doubt see many old friends and acquaintances. Hopefully it will be dry. We used to collect money for the new years days fireworks on bonfire night, and it is quite a tradition. Shall probably make a main meal at lunchtime and go up earlier to spend more of the day in swaledale , for me just the right place to start the year.

Hope you have a peaceful day Mick. GrandMattie, hope the teaparty goes well and you have a good time at your DD. |Karmalady have a good walk.Melanie61 hope the weather improves so you can enjoy a good walk. RoseandLilac hope you have a decent walk and some inspiration arrives as to what to have for dinner. Greyduster hope the lunch goes well

In fact hope that we all have a pleasant and gentle day today and meet up or are able to be in touch with loved ones and friends. Happy New Year to everyone
