good idea to stay at home Thursday and Friday?

Where I live we are under a red weather warning with winds from Storm Goretti to reach Storm Force in exposed areas tonight. We are shutting down at 6 p.m. both flights and sailings all cancelled and we have been told to stay indoors between 6 p.m. and tomorrow morning.

It’s not due to come in until tonight, but there appears to be a high likelihood it will. Get everything essential done today has been my plan, because we could get up to 30cm of snow overnight, and our power could go off as we’re served by overhead wires. If you’re prepared, it will doubtless not be as bad as it could be, I hope.

I find the Rochester Ginger drink (with the kick of two angry mules) is even better - even though it is non-alcoholic. It's cheaper and you can drink as much as you like without affecting your balance.

Some light rain has just started here but the air is still, so far.

I think the storm is coming in later tonight? I have to do a night shift so will be indoors anyway.
I agree that weathermen seem to often exaggerate wild weather.

Our local forecast has predicted that all hell will let loose several days in a row, so far nothing has happened though it looked like we would get strong winds and snow, we got no winds or snow but rather a lot of rain the other day.
We did get a hard frost and icy patches which stopped us going out due to DH being disabled and likely to fall. But am tempted to disregard warnings about stormy weather later tonight. I imagine many people have changed plans due to weather forecasts which will be annoying when bad weather doesn’t actually occur.

Nothing happening in my corner of Cheshire yet. Mind you very rarely get any extreme weather here.

I am charging the car, portable lamps, all phones and tablets, and back up chargers. Candles ready, wood burning stove blazing, plenty of bottled gas for cooking. In Normandy we are expecting winds of 100kph.
The snow disappeared overnight and it is now 7 degrees.

Too late! Been out already . I agree with Maw, a lot of storm warnings seem OTT. We usually just look out of the window to decide whether to go for a walk or not.

TRAX! Yaktrax or Snowtrax, if you have the wrist strength to pull them over your boots, they will give you confidence to stay upright.
I had a forward fall and broke my wrist which was traumatic, in hospital for 7 days, couldn’t go through that again, so my son sent me these excellent trax.
Its foggy dull white sky day in Oxfordshire but at least that chill factor wind has abated, went right through my vest it did.

We are expecting a shipping order delivery from Tesco, hope they make it, our supplies depleted, need fresh food and toilet rolls

On the other hand I sometimes wonder if forecasters don’t over-egg the pudding to cover their backs as it were (mixing my metaphors). They don’t want to do a Michael Fish!

Just exercise common sense.

My dear friend was banging on about how awful the storm was yesterday- she lives about four miles away. No sign of a storm. I think she takes the forecast way too seriously!

Have I been watching the same forecast?
The storm is supposed to arrive today around 3pm

We cancelled our hobby group yesterday evening because the forecast was so abysmal. It turned out better, and warmer, than the previous 7 days. However, people do need to be sensible. One woman was planning on getting there on her mobility scooter, her house is on a (barely used) slope and she is very unsteady on her feet. Crazy!

We’ve been told to stay in on Friday because it will be very,very hot. Catastrophic fire conditions. Two extremes at each end of the world. Once it gets over 40C it too uncomfortable to go out so I have stocked up ready. One of my daughters lives in a bushfire prone area which worries me after our previous experience.

Due to kick in here in S Hants later this evening, rain and wind. No plans to be out at that time anyway, SSEN did send a warning txt yesterday to make sure phone etc charged.

I went out yesterday and will go out again today as it is clear underfoot. I stayed in from Friday to Tuesday as it was like a skating rink outside. There were lots of complaints on the local Facebook group from younger people about how slippery it was everywhere away from main roads. I live on the London fringe.

Well I was all set for gale force winds and torrential rain on my lunch date. Instead it seems to be just a gentle breeze, mildish and drizzle.

We don’t often get snow here (outer SW London - the last week was an exception) but I’m booked for lunch with 2 ex colleagues tomorrow and will certainly be going - wrapped up warm!

Is this storm going to affect the SE of England by any chance?

Other parts of the UK have had bad weather (with storm warnings as well as accompanying falls and other accidents) for ages now, but it's as if it never happened.

I only go out when I have to if it's icy underfoot - it's just not worth the risk, IMO, and these days the ice is rarely around for longer than a week or so at a time. Thank goodness for home deliveries.

When I moved to Weston-super-Mare, one of the encouragements my daughter who has lived here for a long time, gave me was that 'it never snows here'.

Suppose part of that is due to high content of salt in the air, but she has been correct, in the six years I have now been here, have seen snow just once - and then only a very light covering.

Yes, it gets cold enough - but no actual white stuff. As I need to get about using my mobility scooter I do have to wrap up warm as it can get cold on that as I am not actually moving around.

Good layers of clothing (incl thermal undies)enables me to wrap up nice and cosy. So, I am off today both to a morning coffee and chat group and a late afternoon knit and chat group without worries as to the weather. Only heavy rain really keeps me indoors.

Don't venture out unless necessary and then use common sense if you do. In SE Surrey it is milder than previous days but there are still patches of ice around.
