Good Morning Thursday 15th January 2026
(60 Posts)Good Morning Everyone,
Dark, but dry outside and feels milder here in Brackley , with the blackthorn still in blossom still have doubts about weather .
The usual bus trip to shop in Bicester ,despite the bus service being unreliable as to timetable times .
Play 3 games of Wordle before breakfast ,
Health OK ,
Take Care,
Mick
Good morning & best wishes to all from the murky, west midlands.
Feeling a bit grotty! I took my normal medicine & then had a small cup of green tea to relax me. However, instead of inducing a sense of calm, I was violently sick! I wonder if it was caused by an interaction between the green tea & the meds ? 🤔
Good morning everyone from sunny Lancashire. After a few milder nights the cold weather seems to be back here.
There’s a chill in the air today despite the sunshine. MrB and I have enjoyed an ice free walk around the Dock. We had a beautiful sighting of a grey wagtail, the yellow plumage standing out in the sunlight. We often see pied wagtails but only occasionally see the greys.
Thinking as always of our poorly grans and those with troubles.
Wishing you all a good day, whatever you’re doing. 🌹
People have baked and supplied cakes ,pastries etc for decades, think cake stalls for church/school fetes.
My own thoughts are that people with allergies should be proactive in looking after themselves.
If I had an allergy I would be very careful to only eat things I had prepared myself or made in a factory where it is stated that the premises are “free from”
We have a neighbour who developed an allergy to any perfume substances, she tried to insist that when she was present either in her own home or visiting or going out no one should use anything she deemed a danger, make up, perfume, any cream and even deodorant.
She soon learned this was not going to work and she could either not go or face the consequences.
I hasten to say this was not life threatening like a nut allergy would be but she would come out in a rash and reddened skin.
She lost good friends by her attitude.
As others have said I would display a notice stating the facts.
Grandmattie please do not stop what you enjoy doing, bringing pleasure to others.
What a sensible and sympathetic post
If you want to continue baking grandmattie please don’t give up yet, rather get professional advice. There are many cafes and restaurants with warning notices.
We used to regularly take cakes and biscuits to a coffee morning, everyone had been warned in advance about the potential for nut contagion. Our kitchen is not nut free. The person who had an issue was fine with being in the same room, just couldn't eat anything and happily brought their own rather than miss a social event.
Surely if a nut or other allergy is so severe that walking into a room, I’m thinking any baker, cafe or restaurant, can trigger it the person must have strategies to manage the risk.
On the other hand if you’d like to withdraw then please do, but if doing so will make you miserable don’t feel forced by comments here without seeking wider advice.

Definitely no more baking. I can’t risk being a murderer!
Something of an over reaction, surely.
Look into how other bakers for voluntary organisations get round this. Nobody is suggesting you are a potential murderer!
Such a shame grandmaster, there must be a way around this, do try to talk to a professional about this, there are lots of establishments where home cooked foods are available. You just need advice.
Definitely no more baking. I can’t risk being a murderer!

Thank you for all your advice. I shall probably stop baking because I eat seeds and nuts every day.
You can't be too careful. The suggestion another poster that you bake in church kitchen sounds good . A woman from our village nearly died when eating at a fete cafe . It was touch and go

I eat nuts too, it doesn't stop me baking.
One just needs to be aware, if baking for public use.
Yes I hope you won’t feel discouraged GrandMattie. Surely warning notices at your FAB cafe would suffice! It’s not a commercial establishment and I can’t imagine it would be able to continue without your contribution.
Looking at how much energy my Smart meter registers whenever I do the occasional bit of baking, your generosity must be huge in financial as well as time terms.
Awaiting arrival of young decorator for day 2 of kitchen wall repaint. Total chaos and only kettle and microwave accessible but will be worth it I am sure. Meanwhile a cool and wet day means domestic things will occupy my time upstairs out of the way.
Good morning from Sunnyside sandhills northwest coast.
I reluctantly took the painful neck to a rehearsal last night, a small turnout and new pieces to learn. As usual a few of us sociable beings repaired to a nearby venue and I felt better after humourous chat and a drink.
This morning to the dentist for check up ugh, then a return to some much needed housework.
I watched the Greer Ralston film too Grandmabatty and enjoyed it, thank you.
Thoughts to LLFL FGT and all🌺
We have to have our current food safety certificates and although we bring home baking every ingredient has to be on the label with allergens underlined.
A separate coloured chopping board for anything with nuts. The DD of one of our team is an environmental health inspector. 😄

Good morning all from the Scottish borders.
The joiner is working on the ancient front door. Replacing the lock and skimming a tiny amount off the side edge to stop it sticking. So much damp has infiltrated over the past 200 years that he's also going to put a panel over the bottom edge. I shall have a patchwork front door.
The discussion about public kitchens was repeated here about the town hall.
I'm part of the open house Saturday morning café. We are supposed to do all the cooking in that kitchen but it's recently been condemned so while waiting for an upgrade, we have a leaky urn, paper cups and bought biscuits!
It's almost a joke.
Yoga this morning, a couple are coming to see me for lunch in another café, U3A this afternoon and ceilidh dancing tonight.
At least if all goes to plan!
I watched the Greer Ralston film GMB. I enjoyed it and your interview 😍. Her work is very strong and striking.
I hope everyone has some joy today.
My thoughts were also having a warning sign grandmattie. Often seen in cafes around here. If you’d like to continue baking, indeed you don’t have to, it might help to speak to the local food standards agency. I believe they can provide signage if you want to continue. I suspect there would be many disappointed people if you stop.
Good morning everyone from a dull and dismal Northampton, heavy rain forecast all day.
Yesterday was very sunny and frosty and had a pleasant walk to and from lunch at the pub. Lunch was good, my friend and I both had fish, and a bottle of rose wine 🍷 was put away easily... A resolution was made to meet more frequently.
A Sainsbury's delivery is due over lunchtime, and I have two loads of washing to be done. Will probably damp dust upstairs and then vacuum the bedrooms and staircase.
Was shocked RosesandLilac that your husband would be so uncaring. How sad for you.
Wishing all a pleasant Thursday.
Gingster it will be an extremely emotional weekend for you all, I know how much your beachfront cottage means to you and the memories it holds 🫶
I hope you are slowly feeling better Sar53 👍
The washing machine and dishwasher are working their magic, along with my invaluable cleaning fairies 🧚🧚
I need to go to Lakeside to change some of DH’s Christmas Gifts (purchased in Bluewater, fortunately there is a Boss shop this side of the river)
Then this afternoon I have an appointment for permanent eye makeup. I am rather nervous as it’s been a longtime in deciding. I have the beginnings of AMD so if/when my eyesight deteriorates eyeliner will be out of the question.
I have decided to have a very thin line (right in the lashes) top and bottom, no flicks or anything. Just a darkish brown line. I will let you all know how it goes…
Gingster💐I totally agree about feeling upset about employing a house clearance firm,I had hoped to do it all myself but realise I won’t be able to.My niece is kindly meeting me there tomorrow so we will get a few things sorted.
My daughters have been a great help but both work and have young families.I agree though what would I do without them☺️
grandmattie would it be enough to put a notice up saying that the food is baked in a kitchen where nuts are used? Could a health and safety inspector expert help with this?
grandMattie it would be a shame if you have to stop baking and making your preserves, as they are obviously very tasty and much appreciated.
If I was in your position I would make a laminated notice to display whenever you are serving your goods along the lines of these foodstuffs are prepared in a kitchen which also uses nuts and seeds, easy to do and display.
Good morning from a very dreary and dark Wiltshire.
As we only have Ocado on alternate weeks we drove for half an hour to do our alternate shop in Waitrose. It was surprisingly busy for midweek at 11 am. Dinner was Greek chicken gyros. I think I may be addicted! Tonight will be cauliflower cheese.
You are right about allergies Karma. When DD3 was on a school trip to France when she was 13 they were taken to a patisserie with a cafe where they had cakes. She ate nothing as she is highly allergic to nuts (except oddly, almonds and peanuts) when she started to become unwell just breathing in the air. Most of the cakes had nuts on them. The teachers said it was impossible as she wasn’t consuming anything! Piriton was enough to control her symptoms after she had to wait outside.
I hope your chest infection is getting better Sar. Best wishes to everyone else who is struggling.
Good morning all and the forecast is for 100% rain for most of the day.
Yesterday went according to plan . Dh had a haircut, beard, eyebrows, ears etc. and looks like a new man. We went into the cafe next door and had a delicious full English. It was nice to get him out and about.
Back home and I walked up to town to meet my friend for lunch. 😳. Just something light for me but a nice long chat .
Today I have bowls club, then to the pharmacy to , hopefully, pick up dg’s meds. I put the prescription in on 19th december. I knew it was too early but thought with Christmas and new year it would take longer. I went to the surgery to see what has happened. Probably got overlooked. Also got to book Dh in for another ear check next week.
Susan I know that feeling of being overwhelmed. As Dh isn’t up to dealing with things, the sale of our seaside cottage has fallen to me and I’m finding it difficult especially as we aren’t there to deal with things.
Like you I think we’ll have to employ a house clearance team, which is heartbreaking in itself.
We’re going up this weekend with both sons. What would we do without them ❤️.
I hope you all have a ‘good’ day. Take care
Good morning? Very dreary here in the north of Scotland. Off for an eye check with the drops meaning I am being chauffeured. I will treat him to coffee after.
Another person here whose son ha s nut allergy - terrifying. I also carry an EpiPen for other allergies.
Have the best day you can.
