I wish I hadn't had a mouthful of coffee when I read your post Whiff grin

This site isn't private - anyone can see what's been posted.

And anyway, as Whiff says, it's more about algorithms, cookie tracking and other technical processes all way above my pay grade!

Very little is private these days. It seems I only have to think about buying something and suddenly adverts appear on Fb and similar.

My daughter says it's all to do with algorithms. All sites pick up certain words and tailor adverts for either your Facebook page or forum or site you are on.

No idea why an advert for erectile dysfunction appeared on my Facebook site about my disability. I am a woman and been widowed nearly 22 years. 😂😂😂😂😂

I can’t see how me posting on GN about being concerned about friends and their use of personal alarms has any legal implications whatsoever.

It’s nothing to do with you personally.
It’s advertising. Simple as.

Is it something to do with cookies on your devices?

Yes, I think so. I have FB locked down - I do a regular security audit, updated by AI to make sure they aren't sneaking new updates in. I have Siri switched off on my phone, iPad and laptop, but I still get the 'targeted ads' on FB (I use an adblocker usually). I have even opted out of getting targeted ads, but it makes no difference.

I can assure you I didn’t look up personal alarms on Facebook or anywhere else.
I only posted on GN.

In the terms and conditions on GN it’s states that they have the right to pass on any legal information.

It’s all there online.

FB doesn't go by "names" (real or alias) and picks up the info. from what one is getting the computer/phone to look up. I got a bit lost reading the technical explanation of all that - but that's how it functions basically.

Our actual "real world" names are nowt to do with all this - as I know because I have two "real world" names (first name/fathers surname and other name and mothers surname).

Usedtobeblonde Thu 15-Jan-26 16:02:14

I have posted about the above on a thread I started about personal alarms however I think it is a wider concern.
Since I started the thread I have received numerous Facebook pages about personal alarms.
As I said one is a coincidence, more is concerning.
As we are on GN with user names how does this link to Facebook where we are known by our real names.
I am very concerned, others have expressed concern about Facebook and Alexa , now I join them.
Any suggestions or answers?
