I did read somewhere that his grandfather - or one of them - was a German with a name that was modified into ‘Trump’.
Funny how his Scottish GM is often mentioned, but never the German ancestry.

vegansrock..I said the same ,if he looks in the mirror does Putin look back ?

What about that message indeed ?It shows that Trump is not fit to be President of anything, let alone the U.S. He has no diplomatic skills , is prone to childish tantrums and is so unpredictable. Why is he in the post?

Starmer has said today that we need to use "calm discussion between allies". This is the way to go, even if it takes longer than some headline grabbing "politicians" have other ideas.

What about the mad message to Norway?

Yes. Time for hard talk. Appeasement has a very poor record of success

The only possible thing we could do if the US did take over Greenland is impose the same tariffs. Am not convinced that the tariffs will go ahead anyway.

vegansrock Mon 19-Jan-26 12:59:45

No different to Putin invading Ukraine surely. We should definitely impose reciprocal tariffs . Starmer is pussyfooting around.

I was up in Greenland a few months ago, and all the people I spoke to did not want to belong to america at all. They didnt want to have Denmark either but would much prefer them rather than Trump. On our own correspondent on radio 4 , it quoted that 85% of the people of greenland did not want to belong to america.

I agree that diplomacy is a far better action, when it works. For that possibility to work, both sides have to wish to come to a fair agreement, which does not mean agreeing to let Trump just take what he wants. Therefore, whilst it will be very good if diplomacy can make any headway with him, there has to come a point where you have to tell a bully that you are not going to let them go on bullying. Otherwise, even supposing (highly unlikely!) that he was allowed to get his way and take over Greenland, he will just see that his bullying tactics work and carry on in the same way.

It is now patently obvious that this dreadful man - trump - is quite insane.

Oreo Mon 19-Jan-26 12:46:25

Good job that you two aren’t our PM or Cabinet then, how about diplomacy?

Smileless2012 Mon 19-Jan-26 12:37:55

If he carries out his tariff threat and those affected reciprocate, then the American people will be hit financially just like everyone else.

We and his other potential targets need to be strong and stand together against the orange tyrant.

madeleine45 Mon 19-Jan-26 12:27:12

At least Starmer did stand up and tell him that he cannot take over another country. But really , why isnt every single country gathering together to inform him in no uncertain terms that his threats are totally unacceptable and that he will not be allowed to behave in this way?.

Or perhaps Trump would understand it a bit better if everyone announced that they were going to claim the USA. Of course , in fact Britain could say that they are going to reclaim it ! Sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander. Trump seems to think, in the same way as Hitler, that might is right, that he can just lay claim to another country for everyone to allow him to continue.
Well Donald,
even if you choose not to look at it, we know what such attitudes lead to, and we do not have short memories. Whilst I know it is not easy to be sure where everything comes from , at least we could all do our best, not to buy anything from america, and if we could get everyone in all the countries he is planning to charge to do the same, perhaps if americans were hit in their pockets , they might look at what is happening. If they are not interested in justice and fairness, then perhaps being hit in their own pockets might get them to look at where Trump is taking them.
