Red sky at night, Shepherd’s delight?

For us it usually is surprisingly true but our weather forecast this morning was for fourteen days of heavy rain. Tonight’s sunset seems to disprove this, what do you think?

There’s the old saying - Red sky at night, it won’t rain but it might! grin

Lovely photos dustyangel. The Northern Lights were visible all over the UK last night apparently although I did not see them.

No, me neither Greenfinch, although some parts of northern Portugal apparently did! I’d love to see them but I think it’s unlikely.

Or as my darling Dad would have said

Red sky at night
Shepherd's delight.
Red in the sky
Shepherd's Pie

Red sky at night shepherds delight, red sky in the morning shepherds warning.
I don’t suppose there’s more than a kernel of truth in it but it sounds nice.😃

That's the one I know, but shepherds are sailors!

Here in the posher villages the saying goes
Red sky at night, the gazebo’s alight
Red sky in the morning, its spread to the awning!

The phrase I know is, " Red sky at night, shepherd's delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors warning."

Red sky at night = Shepherds Pie for dinner!😺

In the UK those predictions are correct in a high % of cases, our westerly prevailing weather systems ensure that, even the computer weather forecasts we get today are very often wrong

When I lived in Mauritius, the closest island was Reunion, to the west. This island still has an active volcano. So “red sky at night, volcano’s erupting”.
In jersey, it was “red sky at night, Guernsey’s on fire”!🔥
😆

My grandfather was a farmer and this was the sort of thing he used to say. In fact he was very good at predicting the weather from various things (including animal behavior), usually better than the weather forecast on the radio,

Fisherman’s delight.

Red sky here last night. Pouring again today.

Red sky in the morning, ya barn's on fire.

My kids used to say

Red Sky at night
We're getting Angel Delight !

I had some with my grandchildren last night , gosh it was good !

madeleine45 Sun 25-Jan-26 16:32:28

Loved all the variations, but tiredoldwoman, never tried angels delight with children. I would have thought a more savoury sauce would add to their flavour!!

Where I live in NW England, We rarely see the sunset and you can guarantee that when there is a prediction of meteor showers , northern lights , special moon etc the sky will be cloudy. It might be clear the night before or after.
I used to get an aurora notice from Lancaster Uni but never got to see the aurora here. I had to go to Iceland to see some. I never even saw any on an aurora cruise to Norway.
TIC I am getting cataracts removed soon so maybe I will be luckier then.

I knew the shepherd’s delight and shepherd’s warning one. DH always said sailor’s delight.
We see glorious sunsets from the top of the hill. Cars often stop and people leap out to take photographs of the sunset.

Take yourself to St. Anne’s beach. Spectacular sunsets.

We really, really need rain here. Everything is parched ,the lawn is straw and no rain forecast for another week. 44C predicted for tomorrow so I’ll be using up our precious water trying to save a few plants tonight. Aaargh. We do get good sunsets sometimes.
