Yes, it was sadly to see.
It stinks of a sense of entitlement and getting something for nothing, yet these young men appeared to be so ungrateful (and ungraceful) having just been saved from possible death.
Hopefully someone may recognise them and come forward to shame them into paying. I can imagine they'll have been bragging about their 'adventure', possibly even about how they got away without paying and the acquisition (theft) of those valuable lamps.

I read about those two. Absolutely despicable behaviour. They were given a 35% discount on the hotel room, they badgered the staff to give them breakfast and then they were off leaving a £130 bill unpaid. What's more, they left the crutch in the rescue vehicle.
On a different day in July, Penrith mountain rescue team found their donations box at Mardale had been vandalised and the donations stolen. The box was set in a wall so it took some effort to break into it.
These mountain rescue teams are dependent on donations to keep them running.
I despair of my fellow human beings.

Has anyone read this account in the Guardian?

The last rescue of the year, 29/30 December, two walkers
one on a crutch, rescued from Scafell in a 7 hour operation,
absconded without paying a hotel bill, returning two head torches,
gave a false telephone number, who are these scoundrels.

It is a testament to the resilience of the Mountain Rescue teams providing the stamina endurance and capability required to achieve these rescues, often in dark dreadful conditions.

Mountain Rescue teams are commendable anywhere,
a shame that two villains have behaved in this underhand manner, rescue/dine/sleep/dash -how dispiriting this must
have been for a voluntary rescue team and how insulting !

I’m proper cross!
