Morning from a cloudy S Hants, 6, the UTI has finally gone meaning a better night,
What a shame Ashcombe noted for next year I hope.
MrJ changed our bed, turned the mattress and toppers, it does make a difference.
Another day of exercises and being careful, I don’t like wishing time away, but every uneventful day is being counted until my consultant appointment on the 16th.
Enjoy your day if you can, some of us are having the darkest of times.

Good morning Mick and all GN's on another very dark and still morning from North Yorkshire. A better beginning for today, although have a bit of a cold, but hurray it is the 31st, and we are moving from this horrible month to something better. Also prospects for today are brighter, as fingers crossed I shall be having the pleasure of visiting a lovely snowdrop garden. How cheering to look forward to the beauty and the pleasure of meeting other galanthophiles, and of course to be glad to look forward to many more lovely gardens to visit from the Yellow book this year.

Yesterday was a very mixed day, but more positive than negative overall. After all the worry about these wretched parking things, I went to meet up with someone at Upfront, taking all the letters information etc. This included the fact that they envelopes had the Ealing council stamp on them and the letter heading by their parking people, which did not look fake or smudged at all. She attempted to contact them, while I was there, and is very knowledgeable about such things and of course there was no direct phone line to contact them. I was so glad that I wasnt doing it, as it went round and round and was getting nowhere.

So she then asked me to leave the letters with her and she would carry on sorting things out and let me know later what was happening. I was only too pleased to do so, and whilst I was still worried about the wider picture and how it might lead on to other things and so forth, I knew that it was in her capable hands. So much relieved to have done what I could for the moment, I then went off to the garden centre for a much needed coffee and look at plants to raise my spirits and calm down at the same time.

Well it was a bit like a Brian Rix farce, as although it is very popular, and usually quite busy, this was something else. You are asked to take a reserved notice, and put that on a table, noting the number before you join the queue, so that you then give your order, pay and take your coffee or whatever and the order comes to your table with a waitress. I always do this anyway, because if I cant get a seat where I can sit comfortably it is no good staying there, so I automatically picked up a label and walked to my chosen table.

I thought the queue looked rather longer than usual and sat at my table for a little while, hoping the queue would diminish somewhat, but it actually got longer, so I got myself up and joined the line. I had this offer ,from when I had been there over the christmas period, of buy one breakfast before 1115 and get one free.. in january on a week day. Due to the bad weather, and neither of us being very well, we had not used this offer, and yesterday was the last day to use it. They had rung to say they were not well and could not come, so being me I asked one or two people in the queue if they were on their own and would they like a free breakfast, as I was happy to give it to someone else. Much better than wasting it and I thought it would cheer someones day up. Not a bit of it, as it turned out that the whole queue was full of people in the same boat, and everyone was rushing to make the most of the last day of the offer. Tables filled up , and the staff were telling people in the queue that they must have a table number before they could be served etc. They were all rushing around and looking somewhat fraught, with this rather busy overload morning, trying to serve people, clear tables as fast as anyone moved and so forth. I had got my place, and so was ok on that front, and was happy to offer a couple of ladies the chance to share my table as they hadnt got anywhere to sit.

I had picked up my local paper, which has all the information of happenings in all the villages etc., and I was very happy to enjoy my food and a very good cup of coffee, with a happy buzz of the whole cafe busy with people so pleased to get out and about. It was such a good contrast to all the stress of the morning, and I enjoyed a quick look round at the plants in the sale area, and then got a little shopping and home. Started to do a few jobs, but then for some reason, felt quite shaky and cold and so sat with a fleece round my legs and looked at my paper, but then I fell asleep. I must have slept for over an hour, as I woke up , having missed some music I had planned to listen to etc., and my afternoon all mixed up, but I think as I had not slept well that night and was worrying about the parking stuff I needed that sleep.

Then had a welcome phone call to say that they had followed all this stuff up., That someone else had had the same thing happened to them, and it was a scam. They had also reported it to the police, I think especially because it looked as though the paper and envelopes didnt look fake at all, which either meant that they had someone from the council involved or more likely had perfected their scam paperwork. I was sorry to hear someone else had had the stress , but at the same time it rather reassured me that I wasnt specifically being targeted. So I was even able to have a little celebration dinner, as I had picked up a small fillet steak in the reduced basket earlier. Talk about making the most of it! I had some mushrooms and there were some tomatoes going soft, Also had some cold potatoes, so did saute potatoes, some peas, fried onions, used up the tomatoes and mushrooms and even added a glass of red wine, to enjoy quite a little feast in a much calmer mood and was able to watch the Gardeners world programme, another calming influence!

So here I am , just taking things steady today. I have made a list of the things I want to put in the car, and am going to bring in my box of tricks and make sure I have all necessary plates and cutlery etc., with a kitchen roll and rubbish bags etc., so that I am then set up for days out and unexpected trips to anywhere. I shall also be sticking in a set of spare clothes, a bag of swimming things and a big towel, and spare shoes, plus of course my second best secateurs and a couple of plant pots, so hopefully short of nowt I need! It is so good to be looking forward to better things.

Glad you had a good trip Mick and enjoyed your fish and chips, but it is getting so expensive to eat out these days. I dont often do it anyway, but it is even less now, and I usually take a sandwich with me or sometimes I buy a pork pie from our local very good butchers, as an easy to carry picnic food,if I go up the dales or onto the coast or moors. GrandMattie sounds a nice walk down to your class, and cheering to see some flowers coming up. Karmalady hope your buns turn out ok. I just had a phone call from a friend so had to leave this post. She had been planning to go to the snowdrops too, but isnt well, and is very disappointed not to be able to go. We are all glad to see the back of January I am sure, and to be able to look forward (fingers crossed) to better weather and more fresh air.

Wishing you all a happy day today, and lets raise a glass , or cup of coffee, to the end of January.

Good morning everyone from mid Essex, it’s bright but chilly this morning. I may have to go out for a walk as didn’t go out yesterday. I didn’t go to sleep until about 2.00 last night as I’d been at a quiz evening at a friend’s house and my brain was buzzing! 10 of us, mostly elderly and very competitive but many of us deaf and refusing to wear their hearing aids! It was very noisy but good fun.
I’ll change the bedding today and wash it but probably won’t do much else. My family are usually busy on Saturdays so I doubt I’ll see anyone.

ash, disappointing that the hotel wasn’t up to the standard expected.

utbb I hope you continue to feel more human today, it’s miserable when you don’t feel “quite right”

* marzipan* thank you for the lovely photo yesterday morning, your grandchildren are indeed lucky to live in such a beautiful place.

Thinking of all those who are struggling at the moment.

Have a good Saturday everyone.

Good morning from N.Bucks ,still damp but a little sunshine forecast.
Son in Laws op’ went well so hoping his recovery is better this time.
We seem to have a free weekend apart from a local food shop so willl see what comes along.
Wishing all a good day with a smile along the way.

EkwaNimitee Sat 31-Jan-26 07:29:18

Good morning Mick and everyone from dark but dry Carlisle.
I was thinking that £10 was extortionate for fish and chips Mick then remembered how expensive my fresh fish (haddock) has become recently.

Yesterday was a quiet day of pottering about with various little jobs, nothing to report really except that Amazon kindly delivered my package, actually knocking on the door. I find it increasingly difficult to get things locally even in this city. I still rue the demise of Wilko, my go-to place for many things. You've had an annoying experience karma, hopefully you will get your items elsewhere?

Today I will pop into town. I have an M&S voucher which will go towards some chinos I have spotted in store, I'm getting ready for summer!
You aren't the only one who feels January has flown Bella, I was only saying to myself this week that we will soon be mentioning the C word. Time is flying by so fast I am beginning to panic thinking that I won't get to the end of my bucket list of things to do and places to visit before the grim reaper comes calling!

I shall have a phone chat with my sister later, I may have a go at my remaining food cupboards, there's bound to be something I've forgotten about and I might potter in the garden. I can't wait, (well I have to), for the garden waste collections to start at the end of March, I have accumulated a pile of prunings over the winter. Few people have a 'proper' garden round here, it's all grass and patios so the council don''t feel a need to collect I guess.

Have a pleasant weekend, those who can, and my thoughts are with those of you struggling.

Usedtobeblonde Sat 31-Jan-26 07:26:17

Good morning from a milder feeling Stockport.
My phone is showing a temperature of 7degrees.
I felt slightly more human yesterday after feeling very low since a viral infection at the beginning of December.
I did some bathroom cleaning and had a bit of a sort out in my bedroom.
Rain is forecast for today but as I seldom go out it really won’t matter.
My GD is going to a hen “ night” which is about 20 women going to a large house near Chester with catering and fun and games until tomorrow.
Times are so different to a meal out with a few friends in my day.
The groom went with a large group of friends to Belfast last weekend.
I hope all with troubles and problems can enjoy at least some of this weekend and February brings a change for us all.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 31-Jan-26 07:25:03

Good morning from a grey chilly S E Essex, we have occasional showers forecast.

Need to go to local shops this morning, then just pottering I think.

Thinking of all our morning friends with troubles 🙋‍♀️

Marzipan22 Sat 31-Jan-26 07:23:04

Good morning from a dark, rainy, breezy Cornwall.

An oddly mixed day yesterday. At Lego I found another lady had turned up (I thought of your 'hijacked' coffee morning gM) and got stuck in which made things complicated as in a small space it doesn't need three of us and creates a muddle.

Then off to the school via two buses in freezing gale-force rain. I let my fairly small eight-year-old grandson wield his dad's huge umbrella. As he nearly took off across the playground he said, 'Look Nana, I'm like Mary Poppins!' 😂

His dad, my eldest son, had bought me a first edition book, so kind, and we had a rare opportunity for a good chat. Meanwhile my other son was battling the weather to deliver Amazon parcels at what we call Millionaires' Row - some of the poshest houses in the county. Last week he was battling broken down gates and vicious dogs in a quite different zone.

On the way home I hopped off the bus to do a Lidl shop. The gentle rain was reflecting the street lights and car headlights and made a lovely sight. I spent £16 and had a mass of healthy food for that. Today I'll potter and must progress the Boro jacket I still haven't managed to complete for a friend. Fortunately he's been away so hasn't missed it yet but I must knuckle down.

Greyduster Sat 31-Jan-26 07:21:48

Good morning, Michael and all GNs from South Yorkshire where the sun appears to be rising into a clear sky. That bucks the forecast. Mick your fish and chips are still cheaper than they are here!
I’m another who thinks this month has flown by - DD said the same.
Yesterday I was very disappointed to have to rearrange my ear appointment due to snow in the village where the clinic is. I phoned to find out how bad it was and was told it was still lying. Tuesday now, so another weekend of muffled hearing☹️.
I felt quite ill yesterday and spent most of the afternoon sleeping.
I hope to get out for a walk today if it stays dry. We’ll see.
Have the best day you can, folks.

RosesandLilac Sat 31-Jan-26 07:21:18

Good morning, it’s damp around the edges here in south Glos after plenty of rain yesterday afternoon, just for a change!
I enjoyed art group, started a watercolour painting of hydrangeas that’ll take some weeks of doing at the group. Came home and stripped the bed, turned the mattress, cleaned the bathroom etc and started on the washing.
Today it’s getting the washing finished and then I will definitely start my acrylics painting, I have faffed and procrastinated for well over a week which is ridiculous.
I have only 4 more rounds of my crochet blanket to do so more of that later.
We watched Cannabis Cove on iPlayer yesterday evening, set in Newport, Pembrokeshire, my favourite place in Wales. The children and I frequently holidayed in and around there, beginning when the first finds happened!
Happy memories of days on the beaches there.
Wishing you a peaceful day 🌹

Grandmabatty Sat 31-Jan-26 07:14:48

Good morning all from Polmont where it's currently 5° and damp. Ash that sounds disappointing.
Yesterday I got some housework done in the morning then worked with a group of senior pupils in the school library in the afternoon. They were delightful. I dithered at night and ended up making Frrnch toast instead of going for fish and chips.
Today I will meet my friend for breakfast at the local garden centre. Then once I've taken her home, I shall go to aldi. I have run out of milk and washing powder and want to wash sheets and my duvet cover. So a fairly quiet day.

kittylester Sat 31-Jan-26 07:13:11

Good morning all from a chilly North Leicestershire.

DH is about to ring 111 (a small triumph!) as his cough is getting worse. We will see what comes from that.

Have the best day possible all.

Bellasnana Sat 31-Jan-26 06:49:20

Good morning from Malta where it looks bright outside but the forecast predicts thundery showers with hail at times, a strong wind, and a high of 14°C.

Yesterday I seemed to be watching tennis all day as the semi finals both went to five sets and took a long time. In fact the Alcaraz v Zverev match went to 5hrs 27 mins which was a record for a semi final. Very exciting match. I don’t know what I’ll do after the final tomorrow as I shall miss it!

I stripped the bed yesterday so have just put the sheets on to wash, the dishwasher is also going and I shall do a bit of housework once I’m up.

Am I the only one who thinks January has flown? The weeks seem to go too fast and I feel I’m hurtling towards the finish line a lot sooner than I’m comfortable with!😄

Had my usual blow dry yesterday. She’s putting the prices up so a blow dry will be €12 instead of €10. Still cheap at the price, saves me buying shampoo etc, plus I have a lovely chat with my hairdresser of whom I’m very fond.

Sorry you had a less than enjoyable experience at the hotel, Ashcombe. That’s awful! I hope your day goes better today.

I need some exercise today, I feel I’ve been glued to the settee far too much while the tennis has been on.As the weather looks grim, I shall have to resort to ‘walking at home’ exercises I think. 🏃‍♀️

Thinking of you all and hoping the day brings some joy.🤗

Good morning from Sheffield
I am volunteering this morning.
I am fancying a wander around a town this afternoon so we will go to Chesterfield. There is a large market square which used to be full of stalls selling everything you could imagine but these days you will be lucky to see 10 stalls occupied. It’s such a shame.
We are out for a curry with friends this evening so that’s tea sorted.
Take care everyone flowers

Gagagran Sat 31-Jan-26 06:42:36

Good Morning everyone from the south coast. We are promised some sunshine preceded by light showers. The sun will encourage all the spring bulbs which are now showing progress in the garden.

Yesterday was another productive day and DH finished the flat pack assembly of my dressing table with the limited help I could offer. We are both very pleased with it and the way it fits the assigned space. Today I shall get the contents sorted and get used to a new routine.

Our Tesco delivery girl is a trained blacksmith and is working for Tesco to save up to afford her own forge and premises. She is amazingly strong and yesterday carried in three full containers of our shopping at one go. I admire her a lot and am always pleased to see her and wish her well in her ambitions.

Kind thoughts to all struggling with their own burdens. May today be a calm and peaceful one.

Ashcombe Sat 31-Jan-26 06:30:39

Good morning from the Headland Hotel, Torquay where we stayed overnight following the Toads’ Social Evening.

Sadly, the event wasn’t as good as last year in terms of food or service which was disappointing. On checking in, I found the receptionist patronising regarding the signing in process, implying that I couldn’t have driven nor would I remember the registration no of my own car!

Next she told me that our room was down two flights of stairs! When I said I would struggle with that, she replied, “We weren’t informed of any mobility issues!”

Last year’s experience was very different with a lift to our floor and a warm room. In contrast, when I’d hobbled to our room, we found it to be very chilly! All very disappointing.

Today, DH wants to travel to Cardiff to visit a Model Railway Shop so I’ll drop him at Newton Abbot station then enjoy a day indoors.

Have as good a day as circumstances allow. Special thoughts for our mountaineers 🦩🥰🦩💐🦩

cornergran Sat 31-Jan-26 06:20:18

Morning Mick, morning All. Our corner of Somerset is forecast a wet day again.

Enjoyed my volunteer stint yesterday, always a good morning. Stayed away from paperwork in the afternoon as a headache was persisting. A walk seemed a good plan. We’d been out no more than five minutes when a dry morning turned into an afternoon of torrential rain. No fun being out in it. After some thought my fresh air happened via a long, covered walkway at a garden centre where we circuited several times, much to the amusement of the staff.

I’ll head for the admin this morning, have a break at some point with a short supermarket visit and hopefully feel more of a sense of achievement. I agree Karma, January has felt a very long month indeed.

Wishing you all the best day it can be.

karmalady Sat 31-Jan-26 05:53:24

Good morning from s somerset, sunny showers all day today

I potched all morning yesterday, made small crackers from the sourdough discard, hob cooked first and then finished off in my dehydrator. Finished lemon dehydrating and tested a slice this morning in hot water, I could not be more pleased, flavour, colour, and texture were perfect.

I packed everything away and did the hilly walk, having a lovely chat with a woman a bit younger than me. I meet some lovely people on my walks

The whole afternoon I was so tired, never had a nap but went to bed before 9. I am not liking this winter clock, my body rhythms don`t like it, roll on summer time

I am expecting 10 Cambridge favourite bare root strawberry plants today, so an allotment visit is definitely on the cards this weekend.

Amazon have acknowledged my non-delivery cancellations, I have to wait perhaps 7 days before I see the money back and it was all their fault, lies and fibs. I think I will cancel prime again, I did it a couple of years ago and managed without prime for a full 12 months

I am prepped to make a lot of currant buns today, I decided to look for something to do before bed so all the ingredients are weighed and ready for later, my kitchen needs to warm up a bit first

Thank goodness tomorrow is february, it has been a very long january this year

Have a good day

grandMattie Sat 31-Jan-26 05:26:18

Good morning from Bristol. It is dry, but has rained all afternoon, and today we have rain off and on.
My 1.5 mile walk downhill to Spanish was very pleasant with signs of spring - daffodils, various types of snowdrops, witch Hazel, etc. signs of bluebell shoots, Spanish unfortunately. The English ones are so much more beautiful.
The afternoon was quiet, hand sewing the strips between each block of my quilt, reading…
Today, church coffee then back home to the usual solitude, paper reading, sewing., etc.
May all the mountaineers have a better day, and everyone have a reasonable weekend, free from sorrow and anxiety.
Carpe diem 🦩🦩🦩
