Good morning all from the Scottish Borders.
A small Quaker Meeting this morning several friends are unwell and pottery and marmalade making this afternoon. Tonight the film is Downton Abbey. I expect a predominantly female audience.

Yesterday I delivered my pots in time for the birthday. They are for my friend's DGD who prefers hand made.

That's such sad news Ginny. How dreadful for the family. I hope you can support eachother.

I picked snowdrops yesterday so they'll be on the table for Candlemas.

I hope each of you have some joy today.

Good morning from a hammock with a view looking down the Nile and watching the sail boats and kingfishers diving in the river. It’s wonderfully hot and I’m taking a day off from exploring tombs and temples. I’m attempting to interpret the symbols and imagine what ancient life must have been like.
I’ve always wanted to see these incredible sites and they are more awesome than I could ever have imagined.
But today is a day off from walking 12 miles in the heat and fending off the hundreds of taxi and horse carriage drivers.

**Ash**I searched for steam on prime and there are dozens of very good steam train videos, all with real people speaking. Your OH might be very interested

I am a lifetime member of west somerset steam railway and was once taken on a trip around the engine shed. That is where I would be everyday if I were a male engineer with experience

Karma, I have dozens of steam railway books.
I have been on the Flying Scotsmen three times, twice over the Forth Rail Bridge.
If there had been a preservation society here, I would have joined.

White rabbits , white rabbits , white rabbits! Hurray 1st February and good riddance to January!
Good morning Mick and all GN's on a still dark morning, but lightening a little as I am a bit later this morning. Have been waking a few times in the night coughing and got a bit of a cold too I think. Never mind, I dont care, had a lovely day yesterday and if I have to pay for it today so what!

Yesterday turned out so worth while for all the effort I had to put into it to get out. I was in a lot of pain, and things were taking so long to do, struggling to do just basic things. I took so long to get myself organised , dressed and ready, the box sorted, thermos filled etc., I even wondered if it was worth going. However the weather was dry and quite sunny, contrary to the forecast given, and of course the biggest lure was snowdrops to see.

If anyone is up round Guisborough at this time of year and in the summer also , watch out for a wonderful garden called Tudor Croft there . Both the house and the garden are noted now in a historic award thing. The people who own them now, actually run a garden company, and so of course their garden is full of wonderful things and is immaculate. I met Mike oh I think nearly 20 years ago as we are both galanthophiles, and have enjoyed sharing our plants and our knowledge all those years. I had over 100 rare snowdrops in my own garden, and when I had to move, I gave some easy to look after snowdrops to friends, while of course leaving most for the incoming people. But there were a few snowdrops, which are very rare , partly because they do need rather specialised care, and can easily die off if not looked after, so an ordinary gardener might not be able to care for them and keep them going , never mind trying to increase them. So I gave them to Mike and it is quite delightful to see them growing in his garden, where I hope they will add to the small number of them. This year he was due to open the garden next weekend for the yellow book of course, but things are so advanced that he opened his garden this weekend as well.

It was so worth the effort. I really struggled to walk from where I finally got the car parked , and when I got there, instead of my usual way of immediately going to the sales desk, I needed to sit down for a while to recover. But oh what a marvellous time I had. The weather was a blessing, and of course the garden was wonderful. Many many snowdrops of all kinds out all over the garden. Everything is well labelled , and you can write names of plants down that interest you or of course these days take a picture on your phone. There were more than snowdrops too, and a lovely camellia flowering, and wonderful shrubs and all sorts. Also things like a restored revolving summerhouse, and a lovely little house with stained glass windows. That had been at the house years ago, and had been sold or taken away and not been there for I think it said something like 50 years ago. Then they were offered it back and so that was returned.

Anyway they open for the snowdrops and then later in the year once more for lovely roses and a more summer garden of course. Well naturally it was very busy, and that added to my pleasure. To meet old galanthophile friends, talk gardening and plants and feel so much part of the community of gardeners and at home. My neighbours are very pleasant but there are no keen gardeners to talk to and rejoice or commiserate over precious plants. At this time of year the sign of something surviving and coming up helps you to get through the last rather interminable miserable winter weather and I have missed that.

So it was a wonderful and cheering day, although I tried not to notice how much worse I am getting , moving about, even compared to last year. It was the one depressing thought that kept coming up as I struggled to go up some very minor slope or negotiate some steps. But I always take my binoculars round any garden with me. If there is a plant at the back of the border I cant quite see well, they are useful, and so were very good for me today as there was one area I judged would be silly to try and walk around . The path there was someone uneven and wet, so I stayed on the higher level, adjusted my binoculars and was able to look at each clump of snowdrops easily.

Anyway much cheered by this lovely time I then continued on and drove to Saltburn to get a glimpse of the sea. The first time this year. I parked easily and just enjoyed a rather calm sea with some mist coming in. Then the binoculars came out again and I was able to look out to sea, So I came home , very weary and creaky, but it had been a lovely day to remember.

So today rather grey and a little rain, which wont bother me, as it will be a slow catch up day. I shall listen to DID and Private Passions whilst I attempt to bring some order to the chaos, getting stuff dumped from the car last night cleaned and sorted and beds made and something got out of the freezer for dinner. Tomorrow I go to the first Makaton class in the morning, so want to read up a bit about it before I go,so that I am in the right mode to learn. So a quiet day planned so far.

Hope you see some good cycling Mick today. Sounds as though you had a very productive day GrandMattie. I liked the sound of onion soup, might make some of that today for myself. I dont know that Walter presents Danish, might look that up myself later. Karmalady The buns sound good . I could also do with going through all my towels and linen. Over the years you collect things, and I must say there are some favourite towels that either feel very good, or match up and look good in the bathroom, so some other towels hardly used and they are taking up space. I need to have a sort out. Have several friends with dogs, and so a few old ones might be useful for them to have for drying out very wet dogs these days.

Well wishing everyone a very peaceful and pleasant sunday, and enjoy turning that calendar over to a new month.! May things improve for everyone

Good morning all from a damp Glasgow, where it is 6°C,

My condolences Ginmy 💐

I have had a dreadful night's sleep. The pain in both legs and hips was awful, not helped by DH kicking my painful knee, of course, as usual, he was oblivious and denies everything. 🤬

I'm envious of the garden news, We have nothing, DD brought me flowers yesterday 😍 and in between showers, I went out to search for greenery, All I could find was some rhododendron leaves.
She and SIL kindly took my bags to the charity shop, as DH was reluctant to do so. They were annoying me, cluttering up the spare room, so I put them in the boot of my car.

I did not feel great at at all yesterday, thank goodness I had more medication from the GP.
Frustration is my permanent mood at the moment and I am annoyed that I have to rely on DH to drive me to appointments.
I heard a rumour, that TKMaxx may be closing down from lack of my custom. 🤣

DIL, at last, is making some progress, but she has now gone to the other extreme, overdoing her physio exercises and drinking too much liquid, according to her clinicians. She had a little custard yesterday, a major step forward.

I asked DH last night, if we could go and see her this morning. It depends on how he thinks I am, not how I think I am!!
If I hold on to him and use my stick, I should be fine. I am no longer being sick, which is a great relief and we should be able to get parked in the hospital car park.
I am delighted that they are now issuing parking tickets to the many selfish, non disabled drivers, who park in disabled spaces or in the most awkward spots, blocking people in and making life difficult for others.

I wish you all a happy Sunday and best wishes to all the mountaineers, I have a feeling Babydoll may appear to wreak havoc,
She is in for a shock, the chocolate has been moved, because WE HAVE A MOUSE! 🙈, or should I say, HAD a mouse,
I forgot to put her chocolate coins in her stocking at Christmas, so they are a special treat, when she comes.
Unfortunately, she is an independent wee Miss and thinks she can treat herself, whenever the mood takes her.🤣

Morning all from a misty West Oxfordshire. Such sad news Ginny🌹

No church today as I thought OH and I were going to a Farmers Market in another village. But no, he wants to watch the Men’s Singles Final from Australia!

I will make beef bourguignon for dinner a (a favourite) and lemon and apricot clafoutis for pudding - a new recipe. Sunday is a Feast Day so I always make a pudding!

Have a good day.

Love to MaryD and the FGT2S 🪻

Good morning from Shropshire.Another day of rain forecast.

DD and the children came for lunch yesterday.H was very lively but luckily had quietened down when he came back from his swimming lesson. He fell asleep on the settee at 7pm so DH carried him up to bed.He has just woken up.DGD is still asleep💗DD and SIL will collect them this morning.

Glammagran I could have cried when we had to turn round and drive back but honestly DH has been a saint looking after me when I was ill and has done so much to help me with mums house clearance so I smiled through gritted teeth!

So sad ginny, sending my condolences💐

Well done to your DGS Grandmabatty⚽️what a little star.

Thinking of all our mountaineers and Jax I hope the consultant is pleased with your progress and has good news at your next appointment.

Wishing everyone the best day possible🦩🌻

Good morning, Michael and all GNs from South Yorkshire where it is dry at the moment but rain is forecast. Yesterday was lovely up until about four o’clock, then it was bouncing down. I went for a walk and just managed to miss getting a soaking.
I woke up at about half past four this morning and immediately went into February “what if” mode. Must try and shake it off. Nothing much on the agenda today except a general tidy up and floor washing.
I put aside my well known dislike of Monty Don yesterday to watch his Rhineland Gardens series which was fascinating. I told DD about it. She said I should work on my well known dislike of Chris Packham and watch Winterwatch too, but that’s a bridge too far!
Have the best day you can, folks.

Georgesgran Sun 01-Feb-26 08:27:08

Good morning from a miserable, grey, wet Durham. At least it’s February, I found January never ending.
I’ve had a few rough weeks, but not life or death, so I’ve given myself a talking to and thrown myself back into the fray. Others here are dealing with far, far worse. I would like to thank those GN’s who have mentioned me - you know who you are.
I’m meeting DD2 and DGS2 this afternoon at a big garden centre near her. I expect I’ll return with a bag of laundry to see to.

Sad news ginny - that’s no age. My thoughts are also with soop and the FGTs. Better news from MD, especially for her DinL.

Best wishes to all. X

Good morning from Sheffield

Condolences ginny to you and your family, so sad.

I want to catch up with a few household tasks this morning and hopefully a walk locally at lunchtime.

My DH got so fed up with seeing dog poo bags in trees and bushes where people had thrown them, why do that ?
If you can be bothered to bag it why then launch it into the hedgerow.
So he set up a bin, he got a cheap plastic bin from A.. and strapped in to a fence.
We then empty it twice a week. I had saved my mums Sholley, so the black bag of waste goes in that and then away. Not a nice job , he has a stronger stomach than me. I just open the black bag and pass it to him.
So we have that to do later.

I cooked a beef casserole yesterday so will add some dumplings, and then relax.

Take care everyone flowers

Ginny so sad, my condolences 💐

GrannyGravy13 Sun 01-Feb-26 08:12:52

Good morning Mick and all 🙋‍♀️

Its 6° , grey with 70% chance of rain here in S E Essex.

My condolences ginny 💐

Today is what I am calling head wobble day I need to buck up and get on with stuff . I despise January, always found it to be a sad month.

I shall potter, read and make lists of things that need my attention. Busy week ahead, so I need to be organised.

DH requested roast beef for dinner, so that is what we have.

Thinking of those with illness and troubles 🙏🏻

Good morning all from Polmont where it's currently 5° and damp. Yesterday ended up a nice day so I have hopes for today. Ginny that's such sad news for you all. My condolences.
Yesterday my friend and I had a lovely catch up and breakfast. After I dropped her off, I headed to aldi to pick up a couple of things. Then home to get the sheets and duvet cover washed and dried and new ones put on. Dgs1 was at Edinburgh for a football tournament. It was his first competitive game and the wee team lasted till the quarter finals. Another Premier league scout has taken his name. Of course, we don't tell him that - he's much too young for that pressure- but he's obviously talented.
Today I'll head back to aldi for the rest of the shopping or I might leave it till tomorrow after I drop off the boys. I had a rotten night's sleep. I was up every hour, it felt like, and everything ached. So there might be a nap later. Have a good day all

Jaxjacky Sun 01-Feb-26 07:58:53

Morning, light rain in S Hants, so dull. As I can’t wander our garden right now it’s tricky to know what’s coming to life, although MrJ is brilliant in many areas, gardening isn’t one of them!
ginny how sad, my thoughts are with you and your family 💐
glammagran exactly how it is, I dream of getting back to my normal!
My son will call in at some point and there’s a chicken for roasting later.

Good morning from a grey W Kent. Interesting lunch out yesterday with SIL and GS5. Unfortunately DD2 didn’t come as she has flu and was in bed.
Today we are seeing DS and DIL for lunch and a catch up
Ginny condolences on your sad news
Best wishes

Good morning everyone from mid Essex. It’s getting light out, looks cloudy but I’ve no idea what the forecast is for today - probably showery at best!

ginny, such sad news about your nephew, sending my condolences to you and your family.

marzipan it’s good that you’re not disturbed by the activities in your town centre at night!

I managed a short time in the garden yesterday, pulled a few weeds as the ground is so soft, and cut back a very vigorous hardy fuchsia. I’ll try to get more done this week if it’s not too wet.

Thinking of everyone struggling at the moment. I wonder what February will bring for us all.
Have a pleasant Sunday everyone.

EkwaNimitee Sun 01-Feb-26 07:37:58

Good morning Mick and all from dark but dry Carlisle.

Yesterday I popped into town early, visited M&S and bought the chinos I'd had my eye on, plus yet another t shirt. Then I returned to the car via their food hall.
Once home and ensconced with a coffee, I had a long phone chat with my sister then it was off to make soup for lunch. I'm trying to keep my sodium intake down so put less salt in than usual. I didn't enjoy the result so perhaps a bit more next time...
Reading and clothes sorting in the afternoon, but, unless they don't fit, I'm finding it hard to get rid of things.

Today, if I find it's still dry when it finally gets light, I'll go for a walk then spend the rest of the day with the papers and books.

Sad about your nephew, ginny, just too young.

glammagran Sun 01-Feb-26 07:37:20

Good morning - is it ever going to stop raining?

D2 dropped in with the kids on Friday after school. She may as well not have bothered as it was impossible to talk to her as GS2 had a complete meltdown. He often acts like a 2 year old but has no problems at school. I miss having proper conversations with her.

Yesterday we went to Marlborough to buy preserving sugar in Waitrose as I phoned up and they’d just had a a delivery. For once the sun was out albeit briefly. I’ve been trying to buy some for some weeks at various supermarkets. Amazon did have some in stock but at twice the price. You do have to take care what you buy from them. Hope my Seville oranges are still ok in the garage fridge. We had lunch in Ask and got 2 mains for the price of one which was a great surprise. I don’t know how they do it. Just left over Christmas canapés from the freezer and cheese and crackers for dinner

Karma We’ve had Amazon Prime for years and rarely have problems and if we do, they are quickly rectified. However, I’ve had occasions where it’s apparent the delivery driver due “today” has not delivered (delivered next day) as I presume he’s run out of time. This may be outside Amazon’s control. I did have issues when I ordered zip up pillow protectors which transpired we’re being shipped from China and never arrived but got refund. All said, I wish I didn’t use Amazon at all but what’s the alternative?

Gosh Susan you have a stoicism I can only dream of. About 30% of the time we leave the house DH forgets his phone or glasses and back home we go to collect. I’ve too many other things to think of to remember myself. I’m afraid I don’t zip it.

MD your family is certainly going through the mill currently. I wish your DinL a swift recovery. It sounds like she’s had serious surgery. Have a quiet day at home and ask for your beloved Dollie to be brought over to you.

Best wishes to Jax - I truly hope things are improving for you now. I can well imagine you being ultra careful. I was like this a few years ago with a full rotator cuff tear. It’s almost second nature to sub consciously think before moving my right arm upwards.

Some mentions of late on GN of the FGTs. Wishing them love, very best wishes and strength in the face of such adversity.

Have the best Sunday you can everyone.

kittylester Sun 01-Feb-26 07:35:06

Good morning all from a dry North Leicestershire- well I can't hear rain on the velux. It is 4°.

We had a surprise visit from DGS3 yesterday. He had dropped his father at his cousin's house - also in our village.

Today our lovely roof men are coming to look at some of our 'flashing' that has come adrift.

DH and DS1 may go to the football.

Have the best day possible everyone.

baubles Sun 01-Feb-26 07:34:01

Good morning from damp South Lanarkshire.

ginny how very sad, my condolences to you.

We spent a happy couple of hours at DD’s house yesterday afternoon. It’s so unusual for all the children to be at home at the same time due to all their activities so it was absolutely lovely to be surrounded by them all.

Just Mass today the I may have a bit of a clear out of drawers and wardrobes. I have too many clothes which I don’t wear for one reason or another.

Have the best day possible everyone.

brook2704 Sun 01-Feb-26 07:32:56

Good morning everyone from a dark Inverness, it looks very still and quiet outside
Such sad news ginny for you and your family, sending condolences to you all
A quiet day here today, I’m envious of all of you with gardens that are springing into life already, there’s not much happening here although I’ll have another look today and keep my fingers crossed
Thinking of everyone with worries and struggles, hope today is gentle and take care all whatever the day brings 💐

ginny Sun 01-Feb-26 07:23:21

Good morning.
We had sad news yesterday. My nephew who some of you might remember has had medical and mental problems for some years and was diagnosed with cancer last week died on Friday.. 49 years old.
He was at his home alone .
I do not know the circumstances but my niece ( his sister) will call today. So sad for her and my Sister in Law especially coming just a year after my brother died.
Not sure what today will bring but hope it’s a good one for you all .
