As soon as a renewal invitation arrives for my home or car insurance, I spend an hour at the computer seeking quotes on several comparison websites. With those tabs open in front of me, and double-checking the level of cover, excesses etc are the same, I ring my current insurer and invite them to beat the cheapest alternative quote for the same cover. If they refuse to lower their price I renew with a different insurer.
