the feeling of the warmth of the winter sun on your face.

Didn’t realise there was a word for this feeling. Seeing and feeling the sun after so many dreary days is wonderful this morning

I walked in our local park today in lovely winter sunshine. I certainly appreciated the apricity.

Allira Sat 14-Feb-26 16:34:35

Now we know the word, or have been reminded of it - how to pronounce it?

With the emphasis on the first or second syllable?

Grannybags Sat 14-Feb-26 16:32:09

Well I’ve enjoyed some apricity today!

I hate to say that I don't think the word describes the feeling.

Despite the cold air, she sat on the back steps with a book to enjoy the apricity.

Second sentence feels better to me.

On reflection I agree with you.
It sounds a bit like the opposite when you put it like that.

It's one of Susie Dent's favourites. I recommend the podcast "Something rhymes with purple" . It's no longer being uploaded but you learn lots of these sort of words.

I agree, CanadianGran.

Thank you -a wonderful word.

East coast England, not a sliver of apricity here (which my iPad just changed to apricots for me, no sign of them either)
Oh spring spring the only word I can think of for spring sunshine is relief.
It’s been one of the coldest, darkest, dankest winters I can think of.

Dank is a great word and describes this horrible winter well.

I made a long cross country train journey today and the word I would use to describe the view was 'soggy.'

Found it thanks to Google. Petrichor the smell of rain on dry earth. Not what we have at the moment rain on sodden earth.
Newly cut grass doesn't have its own word.
I shall remember apricity. It's a lovely feeling. Winter sunshine.

‘Petrichor’ doesn’t sound a bit like wot it means! Who can think up one that conveys pleasing wet-earthiness?

Labradora Fri 13-Feb-26 16:29:09

Who knew ? Lovely word. These days I'll probably forget it before I have the chance to experience it.

A couple of photos from Dundee showing how nice it is today.

Seemingly, most of us can look forward to some sunshine tomorrow- 14th February - but I won’t hold my breath

Tizliz Fri 13-Feb-26 16:21:08

I am in north Scotland and about an hour ago the sun disappeared and the sky darkened and snow fell. So slow down on the packing.

Allira

the feeling of the warmth of the winter sun on your face.

What is this phenomenon you call winter sun, please?

You'll have to nip up to visit nannydarkhair on the east coast of Scotland to find out!

I've packed my bags! 🌞

Allira Fri 13-Feb-26 15:41:04

I'm sure there was a poster called Apricity, wonder if she is still on here?

AGAA4 Fri 13-Feb-26 15:41:01

If the sun comes out tomorrow it will be a shock. It's been snowing most of day but is so wet that thankfully hasn't settled on the road.

Grannybags Fri 13-Feb-26 15:37:40

I’m looking forward to using that new word!

Rumour has it that the sun may appear tomorrow…🤞

No sun here today, just more rain and grey sky. We’re forecast to have some sunshine tomorrow, but I’ll wait and see.

Grantanow Fri 13-Feb-26 14:26:33

Sun? What sun?

grannydarkhair Fri 13-Feb-26 13:55:32

East coast Scotland, it’s a lovely day here. Sunny, bright blue skies and very few clouds. Still cold though. Forecast is for another nice day tomorrow then back to rain on Sunday.

Scribbles Fri 13-Feb-26 12:52:01

Utterly grey and horrible in my bit of the east midlands today. Not a sliver of apricity to be seen or felt!
