I shop at John Lewis, Waitrose but the giddy limit is buying eggs from an egg farm.

She is almost 13 and an authority on most things.

Not at all posh, but I find Waitrose a better shopping experience, plenty of staff to help lovely magazine of recipes and free delicious coffee.
Best of all NO personal shoppers getting in my way, bumping and taking up the whole aisle.
Fish and meat are better quality and in the quantity I need. Competitive pricing.
You say farm eggs, but, while they are expensive, duchy original organic eggs are miles above in size, taste and lasting anything else as are most of the veg.
They have an essentials range and I can recommend the washing up liquid, the dishwasher products.

I'm just surprised that an almost 13 year old granddaughter would have any concept of the social nuances of using a particular supermarket 🙄

I consider myself as a person of champagne taste and beer money! But I suppose I get brownie points as I buy most of my vegetables and fruit from our very good stalls in the local market. Shop quite a lot in charity shops with an eagle eye for cashmire and cotton . I use cash yes cash, as it costs the stallholder less than using a card, and as I live alone, I want small amounts of various items.

It works well both ways as I support the market as much as possible and when I am having a bad day, the stall people know what I usually have and are kind enough to bring me things to my buggy and I pay them . So dont know what that makes me but I am happy to help the small shops and stalls to keep going locally. I want fresh and good quality and in small quantities, so very little waste of anything.Suits me.

I buy my eggs from nearby farms when available or have organic eggs delivered with my organic milk from the milkman. I have an organic veg box delivered bi-weekly and organic citrus fruits direct from Spain via CrowdFarming. Meat from the local butcher, Top ups from the Co-op, Waitrose and Aldi. Does that make me posh? 😄

Frightfully, my dear grin

I’m screaming inside,,,,,,..I hate the word posh.
I would hate be described as posh.
I want to put posh in room 101.
Sorry.

Don’t be sorry! Let’s do it!

I mainly shop at John Lewis and Waitrose. In a previous existence I was a Management Trainee at JL in Reading. I am not posh. But, slightly edging into poshness - the very edges - if I am at the Royal Academy in Piccadilly, I pop over to Fortnum’s for lunch. Chicken salad and a Knickerbocker Glory. Scrumptious.

Maggiemaybe Thu 19-Feb-26 18:38:25

Actually, I think Rackhams was posher.

Oh, Rackhams in Bradford was very posh. But even posher before that when it was famously Brown Muffs. 😂

My dear college room mate Barbara and I would occasionally treat ourselves to lunch in the restaurant. Served by waitresses dressed in black uniforms with frilly white pinnies. We could only ever afford cheese on toast or egg and cress sandwiches, but even so…

I don’t think John Lewis is posh at all, I like it because they price match don’t sell rubbish and have good guarantees.

Sadly JL has abandoned its original promise of never being knowingly undersold.
It's no longer special IMO.

I went there to look for a new cooker but there were so few in the showroom, I was told to look online or go to Currys. I went to Currys.

Shopping in Waitrose, John Lewis and M&S suggests you have more money than most but having more money doesn't necessarily make you posh. I like to shop in these places but I couldn't afford to do it on a regular basis.

It was a sad, sad day when Woolworths closed.
I am obviously posh because when I go to see my D in the south I travel First Class on the train.
This is because I am 88 and like the comfort and the attention ( and the G&T) and with a Senior Railcard and travelling at the cheaper period it is not too expensive for me.
The staff are so attentive to this old lady.

Apparently the first time DM took me to JL in Oxford Street I really thought it was fairyland. I still love their stores, and as Waitrose is the nearest supermarket (AND has beautifully friendly staff) that’s where I do most of my food shopping. However, much as I miss many of the lovely old department stores I’d think I was in fairyland all over again if the original Woolworths were to come back to my High Street! Not posh, no, but a little bit of paradise back then.

POSH as we know refers to the days of the Indian Raj (good word in Scrabble) when if you could afford it, you would book a passage Port Out, Starboard Home to avoid the strong tropical sun accidentally damaging your perfect skin or, God forbid, getting a tan like an outdoor worker!.

So I suppose if you can afford first class travel you might be described as posh.

My family were inverted snobs who secretly despised the brassy self-made or flashily dressed preferring to think of themselves as classless intellectuals.

The richest person I know, shops at Asda.

Allira Thu 19-Feb-26 16:02:02

I obviously not posh 😁

I will look out for you in Waitrose, though!

LtEve Thu 19-Feb-26 16:00:39

My Dd told me I looked like a typical middle class Waitrose woman because I was wearing my after work outfit of camel coloured cashmere trousers (M&S) with a cream sweater. I said I took it as a compliment and have now bought some camel coloured comfy socks to add to the posh ambience.

Certainly not posh… We shop at Waitrose (ours has a wine bar 🥂🥲) & M&S, occasional deliveries from Ocado… good gluten free options… regular deliveries from Tesco… hubby shortly off to Waitrose… wondering what he’ll be bringing back…😂🤣😂

Goodness, that is posh!

Ours had a café but the café hasn't opened again since the floods.

We used to think many years ago that Lewis’s in Liverpool was posh , not to be confused with John Lewis . We were more likely to be found shopping in Blacklers where prices were more affordable.
Lewis’s had a very large statue above the corner entrance which was a well known meeting point .

Oh, Lewis's in Birmingham! Once a year, Father Christmas and a wander round the toy department 😀
Joy!
Actually, I think Rackhams was posher.

Am I the first one to mention Christmas?

Just to prove that I deserve my posh credentials - when I was a teenager in Derby the place to meet was at the 'Spot Bogs'.

Do you talk posh, duck?

My mother used to say to me:
You munna say wunna, it inna polite.

Really posh people never ever broadcast it and the never wear labels.

Bazza Thu 19-Feb-26 14:54:09

I’m a bit of a supermarket tart as I use any nearby, although Marks is probably by favourite. I shop a lot at JL because of family connections I get great discount. Once I was buying plain chocolate in Aldi and the person on the till said that only posh people buy dark chocolate.

The word posh comes from cruising years ago when it was Port Out Starboard Home but I’m sure you all knew that anyway.

Fallingstar Thu 19-Feb-26 14:30:06

When I was growing up people I knew would apply the word common to someone who was too loud, who swore, spat, or a woman who dressed in revealing clothes. It didn’t seem to matter what class they were.

Indigo8 Thu 19-Feb-26 14:12:11

Sago I agree with you about posh and the use of the word common to mean lower class.

I am quite happy to use the word common in the context of common land or not unusual and as I am not an aristocrat I am a commoner.

Snobbishness seems to be alive and well and far too many people seem to glory in thinking themselves a cut above the rest of us.

A number of years ago the BBC ran a questionnaire about class and I came out as "Traditional Working Class." I am quite happy with that label.
