Sounds yummy but can’t shed any light on it. I remember my old mum would cook off sausages and beans then put them in an ovenproof dish with mash on top and brown it under the grill. She called it sausage pie.

Does anyone remember the recipe for sausage meat pie as baked by your granny? I recall a quantity of sausage meat, egg/eggs not sure how many and baked beans being cooked in the oven. Can anyone elaborate? I'd love to recreate it for my grand children, and imagine it would become a 'comfort food' for them too.

Never heard of it, but I can improvise a recipe.

If you can't buy sausagemeat, buy sausages , cut the casing and squeeze them empty.

Turn a crust into crumbs (machine if you have one; other wise, grate crsut on the coarse side of a hand grater.

In a bowl; combine the meat, crumbs; a heaped teaspoon of dried mixed herbs, half a tin of baked beans and a beaten egg.
Season with s and p

Roll out readymade puff pastry, line a dish, fill with the mix and cover with a pastry lid. Crimp edges; make a slit for steam; brush the pastry with milk; or a bit of the beaten egg I should have told you to save.

Bake at 200 for 35 mins.

I used to make one with 500 g of sausage meat in an 8" pie dish. Shortcrust pastry on bottom, sausage meat pressed in, 4 dips pressed in and 4 eggs cracked into the dips, then shortcrust pastry on top. Cooked for about 40 mins I think. The pie was lovely and now you've reminded me I am going to make it again!

The Good Food website has a SCOTCH EGG PIE recipe that is sausagemeat with already boiled eggs, encased in pastry.

Not heard of that.one. But remember the Sixties when Mum used to buy McKellar Watt Sausage meat. Cut in squares from Lewis's Food Hall in Manchester.

Good quality meat. Then she would fry it with home made chips in Mazola cooking oil on a Saturday night for tea.

I think Sausage meat is sometimes called Lorne was really popular in Scotland...

Sausage and egg pie yes, but certainly not with baked beans in it. You could never recreate one with beans in today anyway because baked beans don't have the same sauce as it used to be.

We made Bacon Crumb Pie in Domestic Science at school. That was bacon, onion, sliced boiled egg and baked beans topped with breadcrumbs, I made it many times at home sometimes putting some tinned tomatoes in.

Sausage meat pie was served for school dinners, where it was referred to as "dog meat pie". Not my favourite but each to their own!

I still choose corn oil for deep frying WithNobsOnIt I really dislike rapeseed oil or plain vegetable oil.
And Kwicksave used to sell that Lorne sausage.

Aldi do a vegetarian sausage meat and beans bake, maybe get that first to see if it's something the Grandkids would like before splashing out on loads of ingredients ?
