Thread “police” (light hearted)

Don’t be offended, please grin

It’s just that I’ve been on two “threads” in a row, to read, from two different lovely Gransnetters, “there’s already a thread on this”, my question is, does it really matter??

When I first joined I was lambasted for some punctuation mistake I had made, the first was a comment, then others piled in, I actually came off GN for a while as I was so embarrassed.
I felt GSM who was very popular with a lot (it wasn’t her who had a go at me) and some others can be very blunt and a bit too personal, we can all make mistakes and not everyone has the same level of education, but may have very valid points to make.

Exactly this👏👏👏👏👏

I had quite a lot of time for her. We used to disagree on some things but she disagreed fairly if you know what I mean.

I think it’s valid to point out there’s another thread or else the subject can get totally diluted and if you decide to only follow one (trying to miss duplication) you could miss an interesting point.

I think my issue is “the way” some choose to “point things out”

There can surely be no problem with a polite alert to an already existing thread on the same topic.

Just as some come onto a forum ready to give offence there are also some ready to take it. Just highlighting a second thread on the same topic is not offensive and can be helpful.

Also there’s the curse of “auto correct”, perfectly normal typos, “fat fingers” especially on a mobile etc etc flowers

DAR, I don’t object to anything being highlighted in a positive and helpful way.

I guess that’s one of the downsides of sites like this, one can post something and just not mean to offend or upset, but without the nuance of speech and eye contact it’s sometimes easy to misinterpret. I’m never intentionally rude. (Or at least, try hard not to be)

Maggiemaybe Mon 09-Mar-26 09:38:40

There always have been and always will be the few who actively enjoy nitpicking and putting others down with the benefit of what they see as their superior knowledge. It’s the same in every walk of life, but it’s always sad to see on here - you’d think we’d have got over ourselves by now. smile

Saying that, I think posters pointing out that there’s a duplicate thread are just being helpful - it can be annoying to put in your twopennorth and then see that the main discussion’s going on elsewhere.

Maggiemaybe Mon 09-Mar-26 09:41:17

Twopenn’orth, probably? Don’t correct me, anyone! grin

GSM was just herself, as are so many on GN!! She was always even handed.

Sorry, but the Headteacher/Head Girl analogy applied frequently to posters on here is silly. It's used to shut posters up when another thinks that one person is hogging the thread on a particular matter.

PS I don't know your older sister, so that might be true in her case! 🤣

MartavTaurus Mon 09-Mar-26 09:46:35

It's not clear how one links a duplicate thread to the original. I've made a mess of it before.

GSM was blunt and to the point BUT she never was personal and she contacted me via private messaging to alert me to some things in my own posts.

But it is personal, rude and arrogant.

What kind of person goes through another adults post to correct and criticise?

In real life would you correct a stranger on incorrect pronunciation or for having a regional accent?

I know it’s irritating for a pedant but it can totally knock someone’s confidence, to do it privately is bad to do it publicly is downright rude.

Sago completely agree with you

No, she wasn't.
She could be straightforward but wasn't given to making personal attacks and could be very helpful when posters needed advice.

There seemed to be a lot of new posters who arrived and started goading her at one time and she was banned.
Very strange.

Cossy Mon 09-Mar-26 10:27:51

Allira my biggest wish is for an “edit” button.

I know there’s a preview function, but guess I’m too lazy or want to post quickly! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

My take on GSM is that you get what you see, no frills, no fuss, just her in all her glory.

She was highly educated, battled and worked extremely hard, whilst bringing up her son mainly alone, and did at times, appear to lack empathy.

But she was more than happy to help anyone with her legal expertise and debated strongly without ever resorting to personal attacks.

I didn’t buy into her politics, but respected her views and admired her perseverance.

She wasn’t everyone cup of tea, but then who is?

We “lost” a few posters across the years and I miss them.

Goodness, sounds like many of my old teachers and many of my school reports! Thankfully that’s all in the past now!

HelterSkelter1 Mon 09-Mar-26 10:41:51

Didn't a GN say that GSM had come back under a new name?? That's also probably the case with other "lost" posters.

Nooooo! don’t stop 😥 Yours are hilarious 😂

Doodledog Mon 09-Mar-26 11:41:27

Autocarrot changes words off its own bat these days. I wrote 'perjorative' the other day, corrected it from 'performative' which was the choice of autocorrect, and when I posted it had changed it back😡

It doesn't make much difference if there is another thread, as many people don't read before posting anyway. Most longer threads have people repeating other posts over and over, so I can't see why it matters.

As a matter of passing interest - do many people go straight to forums to choose what to read? I always use Active Topics, and often have no idea which forum I'm in. I just go off the thread titles.

Calendargirl Mon 09-Mar-26 12:23:28

I use ‘Active’ as well Doodledog.

Then I go to ‘I’m On’, to see if my posts have garnered much interest.

Often, they haven’t!

Just li’l ol’ me still!
