Thread “police” (light hearted)

GSM was blunt and to the point BUT she never was personal and she contacted me via private messaging to alert me to some things in my own posts.

Sago

Some years ago I was lambasted for some poor punctuation and spelling, a regular poster (now gone) started and her cronies then joined in.

At the time I was probably at the lowest point in my life and really unwell.

It hurt.

At least Germanshepherdsmum contacted me by PM to point out my grammatical errors 😂

I think it’s valid to point out there’s another thread or else the subject can get totally diluted and if you decide to only follow one (trying to miss duplication) you could miss an interesting point.

I agree.

I always try to check if a similar thread has been started, but one could be on Chat say, and another on News And Politics, so you miss it.

No sense in two. I’m not offended if someone points it out to me.

Duplicate threads don't bother me. Some threads get so long that posts get lost and not read.
A chance to put a point a on a shorter thread may be better received.

I find comments raising concerns about duplicate threads pointless and a little irritating. Also, comments on a thread that viciously criticise a previous comment up thread rather than focussing on the original topic are just plain nasty IMO.

I thought that this was about the police Cossy 🤣 but am not going to get cross about it, I think is rather mean for sone posters to upbraid others about something trivial.
A waste of energy imho and as Sago said nobody knows what a posters lived experience is. Some are going through a dreadful time and a harsh word about something silly could really hurt.

That’s awful flowers

We all make mistakes, typos, spelling, we sometimes inadvertently unchecked or inaccurate info, agree that we should be mindful when pointing out things, I’ve been “corrected” on here, sometimes in a way that perhaps I didn’t totally appreciate, links to duplicate threads (if allowed) would be great.

I just think a little less bluntness would be appreciated by many of us.

Enjoy the rest of Sunday smile

Not wishing to offend but who cares, really ?

It would be helpful if the person pointing out that there was already a thread on a subject provided a link to the original thread.

I do try to do that.

I wouldn't actually call this 'thread police' as it's just trying to be helpful.

IMO 'Thread police' are those who try to tell you how you should respond, or who complain about threads going a bit off topic.

It’s just that I’ve been on two “threads” in a row, to read, from two different lovely Gransnetters, “there’s already a thread on this”, my question is, does it really matter??

Is it unreasonable for people to be made aware of an already existing thread? You may want to be seen as "lighthearted" but calling people the "Thread Police" cannot be anything other than accusatory. My question would be "What was the point you wanted to make?"

Maremia Sat 07-Mar-26 13:15:05

Isn't it just a Point of Information, rather than a criticism?
I suppose that depends on the wording.

Not to me it doesnt.

I did tell a suspect poster recently, that she had already started a thread on the same subject, but from a different angle[which altered the whole perspective].
She stopped the 2nd thread. I didnt bother looking back to see if she had stopped the first.

HelterSkelter1 Sat 07-Mar-26 13:07:27

I agree Cossy not very helpful if you are new to Gransnet and haven't read all the threads.
If there is a current thread, which may be in another forum and not Chat, it would be kind to provide a link to it.and if its a thread in the past...well that's where it is in the past.

I think some Grans think this is a small select group and everyone knows everything about each other. So when a Gran says "".as you may know" about themselves it's more likely most Grans don't know.

Youngerthanspringtime Sat 07-Mar-26 13:03:12

Yes I would agree with ViceVersa, but there again yes it does make it easier to comment if it's all on one.

Allira Sat 07-Mar-26 13:02:19

Perhaps not but it can get confusing.

I'd rather someone told me promptly if I started a thread and there was already a well-established one on the same subject.

ViceVersa Sat 07-Mar-26 12:59:43

I don't suppose it does, in the grand scheme of things - but personally I just think it makes things easier if it's all on one thread rather than scattered across several.
