Jean metcalf and cliff michelmore on a sunday morning playing song requests for British forces abroad. I used to love listening to it. Pat boone was a favourite request for the song " I'll be home my darling". Beverly sisters, alma cogan, Vera Lynn among many others

Witzend

Yes, and Children’s Favourites! I used to have a cassette of the favourites, including the typewriter one, Nellie the Elephant, Little White Bull, etc.

A couple of years ago I found on YouTube a cartoon version of Nellie the Elephant - the original Mandy Miller version. The Gdcs loved it!

Also .......

The Runaway Train
How Much is that Doggy in the Window
I'm a Pink Toothbrush You're a Blue Toothbrush (....or blue and pink the other way round!)

Brings back so many memories from childhood.

We never had a tv either but I remember a radio favourite in our house was Workers Playtime, hosted by the unforgettable Wilfred Pickles!!! Anyone else remember his catchphrase - “give ‘em the money, Mabel”?!!! Happy days of innocent, decent clean humour!

The humour was not as cleanas we thought it was - very clever word play and double entendre. Round the Horne was quite smutty. Have listened to it recently no swearing but.....

The mention of RAF akritiri brought back the family favourites.

Remember hearing it at my grandparents

Thank you Polo for posting that - genius. Remember all those programmes, along with the \Sunday ritual. Gentler days, hey ho.

I can remember listening to The Clithroe Kid on a Sunday if I happened to be at my grandparents house.

Yes I remember it, and Children's favourites too. If I was off school sick I would listen to the radio (The Light Programme) Housewives Choice too. I never listened to the Archers though Mrs Dales Diary on occasion. smile

No one has mentioned Larry the Lamb (yes Mr Maaayor sir) (Not a typo!) Also my favourite "Nature Parliament" where nature experts answered children's questions, and discussed nature in general. I had a question answered on the programme, but we were away on holiday, and I missed it, and it was left to my cousins to tell me. I was so upset! My question was "Rooks build their nests really high up in trees. Do they get blown away by the wind?" Or words to that effect.
I used to listen to "Journey into Space" on our Radiofusion radio. One hand on the off button when it got scary.

The Glums were on Take it from Here!

...and what about Edmundo Ross. I was only a young teenager but I absolutely loved the music. I used to listen to Sing Something Simple on a Sunday evening whilst at college. My fellow students though I was so old fashioned.......

Pammie1 Mon 09-Mar-26 14:40:53

Yep. Fond memories every Sunday morning.

Allira Mon 09-Mar-26 14:42:57

and what about Edmundo Ros

Oh yes. I had visions of a handsome Latin American man.

Jockytaff Mon 09-Mar-26 14:52:01

Polomint - my mum always listened to this on Sunday because her brother was stationed in Germany. I dreaded it & Sing Something Simple later in the day because it meant school was looming the next day!

Ktsmum Mon 09-Mar-26 14:52:16

Oh yes, I remember it so well, I used to love all of the messages

I listened to all those programmes on Sundays, ending with listening to the top twenty with my dad, late at night. I suspect that might have been on Radio Luxembourg.

phantom12 Mon 09-Mar-26 15:22:15

I remember listening to it and also Junior Choice, Jimmy Clitheroe and Listen with Mother.

I thought of this just the other day when the drone hit in Cyprus and they mentioned RAF Akrotiri. It was Sunday lunchtime listening in the 50s and 60s. Followed by programs like Round the Horne and Billy Cotton Bandshow.

Jojo1950 Mon 09-Mar-26 15:40:58

Yes. I think it was on a Sunday if I remember correctly.

Lizzie44 Mon 09-Mar-26 15:44:26

Thank you all for sharing your memories of Sunday mornings. They resonate so strongly with my own memories of that time, and of my Dad listening to the wireless (he never called it the radio). Wonderful names from the past...Wilfred Pickles _ "give 'em the money Mabel! Dad and I used to love listening to it. Meanwhile, Mum would be slaving in the kitchen to get dinner ready to put on the table.

DamaskRose Mon 09-Mar-26 15:51:02

Wonderful thread and wonderful memories, thanks so much everybody. I remember all these programmes, we had a tele but listened to the “wireless” a lot too. Makes me miss my Mum though … 😢

Geordiegirl1 Mon 09-Mar-26 15:58:33

Happy contented days. And Housewives Choice, Music While You Work, Listen With Mother, Children’s Hour. And one I remember which, when I ask others of my age, they don’t! It was - ‘Its five to 10, time for the Morning Story.’

Glenfinnan Mon 09-Mar-26 16:03:35

Great memories… always listened with my Mum .. while we had a cup of camp coffee!!!

4allweknow Mon 09-Mar-26 16:15:16

Loved that programme.

vegansrock Mon 09-Mar-26 16:22:29

Was it Round the Horne that had Kenneth Williams as “Julian and his (boy)friend Sandy”? They spoke polari which fascinated me!
