1.I think it is a bit weird that contestants on tv quiz shows applaud themselves, especially when they are dropping out, though I suppose one could argue that they are applauding the remaining ( better) contestants.

2. I think it is weird that when someone wins a raffle or prize draw people say “ Well done!” I recently won a small sum and I hadn’t actually done anything, other than buy a ticket.

I’m just being pedantic, but it didn’t quite fit Pedants’ Corner.

1. Maybe they are told to do this by the production company, sometimes they look uncomfortable doing it.

2. People just being polite. No harm in it. Just expressing their pleasure at the winner's good luck.

Maybe it is to make sure they do not look like bad losers.

I have thought this for a long time. People applaud themselves on chat shows as well as game shows. It seems odd to me, but it may be that I was brought up to be modest about any achievements!

I too find this most odd.

I’ve noticed this too. I find the same with “Flog it” when an item reaches an unexpected high price. Everybody claps as though the owner of the item has achieved some sort of personal triumph. Very weird - must be the excitement of the moment!

I once saw a young woman’s comment on Facebook congratulating another on her ‘achievement’ the so called ‘achievement’ was winning a beauty competition. Al she had done was prance around smiling? What was the achievement !!!

.

I think the weirdest look is like the contestants on programmes such as 'Who wants to be a Millionaire' who all look absolutely gormless doing their palm-out waves!

I said to my son that I'd refuse but he said that you probably don't have a choice - 'do it, or you won't be allowed to appear'.

Another annoyance is when Lee Mack on 'The 1% Club' (which I really enjoy) says after the question "Let's see who got the question right" and then they go on to show you those who actually got the question wrong!!!

A lot of people are just sheep, puppets and zombies and have few ideas if their own.

Has got worse with Social.Media.
Mass conformity.

🐑🙈🙉🙊?

The idea of applauding yourself certainly doesn't go down well, in the past this would have been considered as showing off and completely inappropriate.

It started a few years ago and I find it odd too, who congratulates themselves? Toddlers sometimes do😁

Very irritating.

Thought it was just me who thought it was strange.

Wheel of Fortune is the worst - the audience clap every time the wheel is spun. Why? I’d hate to be in that studio audience - Would have sore hands by the time you came out.

Nannan2 Sat 14-Mar-26 20:37:25

I agree, it just looks like they're blowing their own trumpet. I could not do that.

Oreo- 😂

I’m reminded of performing seals. 🦭 🦭 Thankfully, it’s not acceptable nowadays for animals to be treated in that way, so perhaps humans have been trained up as their replacements. 🤔

SueDoku Tue 17-Mar-26 17:54:18

Every time I see someone doing this, I hear my Mum's voice, saying, " Only sealions clap themselves"....😄😁
