No, my parents (divorced) were both in hospitality, pubs with restaurants.
I ate what I fancied from the menu, apart from Sundays when with Mum and then it was always a roast in UK. Abroad we ate out or picnic on the beach.

The only regimented meal was Fish Friday and I still maintain that.
Yes, Fish Friday!
As a child it was always sausage and mash on a Saturday and roast beef Sunday. The week varied a bit but usually fish on a Friday
I normally do a roast on a Sunday and cold roast meat and baked potatoes on a Monday with salad or peas but then vary things as to what we have. Normally one fish meal a week.
When I was a child in the 50s the beginning of the week was always the same, a roast on Sunday, Cold meat and mash on Monday, and probably rissoles on Tuesday. The rest of the weekend was more random. On weekdays my breakfast was always two rashers of streaky bacon with a fried egg.
I’m trying to remember the breakfast menus.
Cereal to start, if we wanted.
Sunday boiled egg.
Monday beans on toast.
Tuesday- bacon ( one rasher of streaky) and a fried egg.
Wednesday- poached egg on toast
Thursday- fish cake / fish finger and beans
Friday- scrambled egg
Saturday- sausage and tomato.
Bread and marmalade if anyone was still hungry or had time.
My mum carried on in this fashion almost till Dad died, though latterly she hadn’t the energy to do what was effectively a three course breakfast, but portions so tiny that they did not provide as many calories as it took to produce it, especially as everything had to be brought through from the kitchen to the dining table.
No, my mum was a bit like me, make up your mind on the day. Or in my case minutes before I cook something. Probably the only prepped meal is on a Sundays.
Wow your question brings up fond memories . it depended on if I was home with mom or visiting grandmother. Had working mom so it was whatever was in fridge and could be cooked quick. if Dad was cooking he would scramble eggs and mix whatever leftovers in them. And remember, you had to eat what was put in front of you (:>) No set days for things like meatball Monday or stew Saturday .. Only when at Grandmother who always had fresh fish on Friday. Otherwise only had leftover if she had cooked spaghetti, stew or it was holidays
So when living at home, this was our week!
Sunday - Roast Dinner
Monday - Shepherds or Cottage pie
Made with Sundays leftover
Meat
Or Cold Meat & chips & peas
Tuesday - pork or lamb chops & vegs
Wednesday - Egg, ham & chips
Thursday - pork or lamb chops & vegs
Friday - Fish
Saturday
Winter - chicken and jacket pots
Summer - Dad’s barbque
We don’t have any dish on a particular day and have a much bigger range of foods, my DM didn’t cook anything she didn’t like and she didn’t like very much haha, no cheese dishes, no sauces, no rice, no foreign food of any type.
Her only exception was she did cook cabbage as it was mine and my DD favourite.
She was a good plain cook and would also make desserts at the weekends, apple pie, apple crumble, milk jelly, sherry Trifle (only special occasions), flans and lemon meringue pie!
Yes we too knew which day of the week it was by the menu, including cooked breakfasts. I still remember when fish fingers were first available!
As an adult my week still has a pattern to it, but I am much more flexible. Meals revolve around what I’m doing. If I’m out in the evening for choirs I have a cooked meal at lunch time, or otherwise I end up having three snack type meals.
I have meat on Sundays and try to cook enough for Monday lunchtime. I used to have fish on Tuesdays and Fridays but some weeks that doesn’t happen. Fish might mean salmon stirred into pasta for me, unheard of by my mother, except as tinned spaghetti on toast.
Wednesday is spag bol, from pre-made bolognese sauce from the freezer as I have a quick turnaround between afternoon u3a and evening choir. Thursday is often vegetarian. Saturday varies the most. I try to decide the night before, as I have a lot of portions of meals in the freezer, so I defrost overnight.

No such thing in my family when I was a child, and I’ve certainly never done it.
Who else remembers Shirley Valentine, where her husband was very cross because she’d given him something else on ‘chips and egg’ night?
Yes, that's what instantly springs to my mind too!

Yes, we knew what day it was by the dinner we had.
Do you do the same now, or did you rebel ?
Nooo. Not me lol. I never make my mind up what we're having until the day.
Same here !

I wonder if it's something peculiar to the UK? What about Grans in other countries ?
The only day where the meal was predictable was Sunday, roast beef.
Yes, same with me.

When we were growing up we seemed to always have certain meals on certain days of the week and this never changed unless something happened. We used to know what day of the week it was by what meal we were having. I swore I'd never keep to this when I had my own home and never have, I mix and match. Was it because there wasn't so much choice ? But even so it could have been alternated. What was it like in your house ? If your meals were regimented in this way, do you continue or did you rebel ?
